I'd say Bret Hart beating Ric Flair at a house show in 1992 was a monumental upset

In WWF history too I'd say the Iron Sheik beating Bob Backlund was a huge shock at the time

Was the Rey Mysterio one really that big of an upset? Was it an upset at all? Surely it was obvious that he was going to win the world title.

Probably would say the Big Show at the Survivor Series 1999 deserves a mention. Surprised they went down that route given that he dropped it a month later.

Eddie Gurrero vs Brock Lesnar should be up there

CM Punk vs John Cena maybe should be there

Chris Beniot vs HHH vs HBK should also be there IMO

Sheamus vs John Cena at TLC maybe - Apparently he wasn't even suppose to win!

What about when Mankind beat the Rock in late 98, that was a shock that caused millions of Wrestling fans in America to switch channels

What about Flair at the 92 Royal Rumble? I'd consider that an upset. Not from an ability point of view, but from a story point of view. Going over an hour, beating the likes of Hogan, Sid, Roberts, Savage, Taker et all.

I wish I could have seen that one. Things like that before the internet would have been huge.

Rumble 92's a great shout, especially considering Flair drew three, and at that time the winners generally came in later.

One I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned is Bob Backlund winning the title from Bret Hart at Survivor Series 95.

I don't think that was much of a shock at the time to be honest, in the lead up to it Backlund was presented as a very dangerous man, a skilled competitor who could snap at any given moment, a bit of a Psychopath, add that the fact it would have taken Owen Hart to throw in the towel for Bret to win I always felt the odds where stacked against Bret in that match.

I actually think Diesel going over Backlund at a house show a couple of days later was more of a shock

Surely anytime D-Bry retained his World Title after winning it should be considered an upset, especially against Big Show and Henry. Although criteria appears to be when they've WON, not retained.

Agree on Sheamus-Cena. I don't think there's been too many others in recent years tbh.
