Cleverly vs Coyne off?
Undefeated light-heavyweight contender Ryan Coyne has revealed that his fight with WBO title holder Nathan Cleverly is highly unlikely to happen due to action taken by his ex-promoter Don King.
The 30 year-old southpaw has been announced as the Welshman’s fourth title defence for the last few weeks, but has now revealed that his one-time promoter King is threatening legal action towards the fight agreement.
The contest was pencilled in on the undercard of Golden Boy’s massive headline card featuring Abner Mares and Anselmo Moreno and Coyne is distraught that the opportunity may have now been taken away from him.
“I am sorry to toss a monkey wrench in things, but my fight with Nathan Cleverly is not going to happen,” Coyne told World Boxing News. “This is purely because of the spite of an evil zealot named Don King.
“I personally am 100% ready to go forward with this fight and I can’t wait to oppose Nathan Cleverly next month, but Don threatened the WBO and Frank Warren with a lawsuit and that seems to be that.
“In my eyes, my contract with him expired, but he is now claiming an extension and due to his threats to great promoters like Frank Warren and Golden Boy, it is a dreadful situation that has cost me dearly.”
It now remains to be seen whether the high-profile fight can be salvaged or whether the Saint Louis boxer will be forced to giveway from his deserved shot at the 175lb world title at Don King’s expense.

Don King living up to his repuatation, even after all these years he hasn't mellowed. Can't imagine there will be an improvement of opponent for Clev though off the back of this. Would be happy if Bellew got a rematch as I enjoyed that fight.

A great promoter like Frank wouldn't cross swords with the evil zealot named Don King, I'm sure.

Hopefully cleverly can at least step in with a top 50 light heavy now, but I'm not optimistic, more likely it will be a Karpency rematch knowing frank

Re: Cleverly vs Coyne off?
I hope it is cancelled and he gets scrapped from the card. It was a nonsense fight in the first place.
Try giving the mandatory a fight Frank instead of begging the WBO for ridiculous defenses against woeful fighters.
Cleverly is still sniffin around at a domestic level but with a WBO world title.

Too dangerous an opponent for Cleverly at this stage, particularly at short notice. Let the lad crawl before he can walk, alma.

Pac can step in.....with weight stips....ask Clev to come in at 160 and claim to be the best ever at LHW after stopping a mildly weight drained Clev.

Just reached a point where I struggle to care a jot about Cleverly's career. Sad, because when he was on Sky a few years back before he was World Champion I was really interested and really liked him, it's just become one farce after another, sadly.

This is still in doubt with the great quote on the BBC web site of "He has trained hard for a 12-rounder and desperately wants a world title fight," said Cleverly Sr. I am sure you all agree that after two years of holding the title, we all would like him to have a world title fight as well.

Ladies! You cannot blame Cleverly for this latest fiasco. As much as I'm a grave doubter myself this is not the man's fault.
And Union - The Vetch field was knocked down many moons ago. From a moderator.....I expect better!

Re: Cleverly vs Coyne off?
cleverly cant be blamed for the opponents, but he can be blamed for year after year not leaving or trying to leave frank, or at least pushing for bigger fights. its not like he's beating b level world fighters, he's beating nurses, amatuers, window cleaners and club fighters. i dont know where they find these guys sometimes.
have they ever heard of a mandatory challenger, or god forbid a unifaction fight?

Re: Cleverly vs Coyne off?
Confirmed off. Apparently Warren has to find a replacement ranked top15 by the WBO and has '3 names' at the moment.
How/why a ranked (even by the crappy WBO) fighter would take a match on such short notice is beyond me.

Re: Cleverly vs Coyne off?
One of this lot then...
1 Robin Krasniqi (International) GER
2 Braimah Kamoko (WBO Africa) GHA
3 Juergen Braehmer GER
4 Dustin Dirks GER
5 Eduard Gutknecht GER
6 Bernard Hopkins USA
7 Vyacheslav Uzelkov (Inter-Continental) UKR
8 Andrzej Fonfara POL
9 Cornelius White USA
10 Karo Murat GER
11 Denis Simcic SVN
12 Jackson Junior (Latino) BRA
13 Isaac Chilemba MAL
14 Tony Bellew GB
15 Eleider Alvarez (NABO) COL
He should fight Braehmer, that would at least give his claim to the title some validity.

Re: Cleverly vs Coyne off?
Juergen Braehmer would be a proper test and at least he would have a little more legitimacy if he beat the man who actually held the title previous to himself. Sadly cant see FW taking such a risk though unfortunately, even though i bet young Clev would jump at it.

That would definitely up his rep with the fans. I've got a feeling the fight will happen at some point. I think Universum handle Brahmer and they have a big stock in the WBO .They'll probably force a manatory somewhere down the line for Brahmer to get his old title back. They'll probably pay the WBO loads to stage it in Germany the way they did for Mario Veit v Calzaghe who (laughable as it is now) paid around £1m to the WBO to fight in Germany, that confident that their man could avenge the defeat of the first fight. Sadly for Clev I think he's living on borrowed time.

Is Clev that bad or are people down on his due to his level of opponents? I haven't bothered watching him since he went off to BoxNation.

Re: Cleverly vs Coyne off?
He's a good fighter but probably not really world level. Looked pretty ordinary recently and that having dominated Karo Murat who was meant to be something. Since nearly losing to Bellew he's been held back big time!

Re: Cleverly vs Coyne off?
Don't think his stock dropped from the Bellew fight. He was clearly the better fighter and was never in danger of losing, but wanted to show he could beat Bellew at Bellews own game which made it alot closer.
Cleverleys problem is that Frank Warren thinks he can do the same thing promotionally with him as he did with Calzaghe/Hatton/Naz/Eubank, ie feed him unknown bums hoping no one notices. Times have changed and those days are gone thank god.

Re: Cleverly vs Coyne off?
So apparently it's Shawn Hawk from the US for a title fight. I thought the bloke had to be in the top 15 for a title fight, but isn't in the list above from Union. Another fast one from Warren or a real challenge? I have no idea, but with history on my side I lean to the former. Anybody got any more information on him beyond him being ranked 10th light heavy in the US?

Re: Cleverly vs Coyne off?
He's a native American and was fighting at heavyweight (weighing in at 228lbs) in 2007.
5 fights at light heavy, last outing was a defeat for the WBO NABO light heavy title.
Hopefully a win here will set up a clash with Hopkins, Cloud, Dawson etc etc etc...

Re: Cleverly vs Coyne off?
Agreed alma, all the talk of the other titlists avoiding him, Froch turning down £1m, Clev going down to super-middle if the offer is right, all that, and then a fight against this guy. Cleverly is an intelligent chap, but he has either fallen for FW's waffle or he realises that he can't cut it at the top level.

Re: Cleverly vs Coyne off?
I agree that it is a weak defence but his fight against Karpency or Calzaghe against Manfredo or even Haye against Harrison are as bad if not worse. I still ask the question how is it a world title fight when we were led to believe it had to be at least a top 15 boxer to make it so?

Re: Cleverly vs Coyne off?
The top 15 are probably ducking him as well. More Warren waffle, bhb. The WBO could hardly refuse to sanction the fight as they had already sanctioned the original fight against Coyne, who let's not forget is also nowhere to be seen on their rankings.

Wow, the Daily Mail. Must be true then!
Joking aside, thanks Shah for putting this up, but I will take it as a chance to get publicity (sell a few tickets) before his fight on Saturday.
