Re: Liverpool FC Thread: Numero Deux
Good season for sure.
Heskey used to be a beast, I think his later years made people forget just what a good player he was. With Owen that season he was very good, I'd say the equivalent now would be Benteke watching Heskey then.

It's funny seeing what people thought of certain players then, like the young Gerrard.

I remember watching the Alaves game in a pub with 2 Leeds Utd fans and going through every emotion possible while these 2 Leeds fans cheered on Alaves
it was so good when that golden goal went in

Golden own goal as well.
I always feel sorry for Westerveld, he was a decent keeper, but was just thrown to the side after this season.
Babbel was a good player.
Also amazing how little a role Fowler played this year. Heskey and Owen were too good for him to get in.

The squad seems huge as well, probably the only way we could win three trophies.

Honestly what happened to this Heskey? He's firing off everywhere, looks unplayable. Don't think we ever saw that Heskey again.

Probably would have been if didn't go so far in all the cups.
It's not that good though, it's filled with quite a lot of average players. Players like Traore, Biscan, Barmby, Song, some other guy with dreadlocks with a strange name... there is obvious quality in there, but it's strange just how many players must have been in the squad.

Re: Liverpool FC Thread: Numero Deux
I've always been one of Heskey's biggest fans.
That season just brings so many great memories. I'd take 2001 to the vault way before 2005. I watched the League Cup final in a packed pub with my brother-in-law who's a Brum fan. They were unlucky that day if I remember correctly?
Definitely watching that later. They were the days...

Gary Mac was immense that year also. At 36 too I believe?

Re: Liverpool FC Thread: Numero Deux
Yeah, he was well old.
Another thing I noticed is players like Heskey and McAllister celebrating against old sides. That is a weird modern phenomena. Especially when it's somebody like Sturridge against Chelsea and City where both teams treat him awfully, you'd think he'd love scoring against them. Fans were abusing him all game as well.

I remember reading a Johan Cruyff article before the UEFA Cup final where he predicted a 0-0 draw and the most boring final in history!

I think the average players all did a decent job though , you need some work horses aswell as the stars .

No, I think he might have been a forward or midfielder. He nearly scored an overhead kick at the start of the season.

Re: Liverpool FC Thread: Numero Deux
1 GK Sander Westerveld
23 RB Jamie Carragher
12 CB Sami Hyypia
6 CB Stephane Henchoz
2 LB Markus Babbel
17 RM Steven Gerrard
16 CM Dietmar Hamann
21 CM Gary McAllister
20 LM Nick Barmby
8 CF Emile Heskey
10 CF Michael Owen
Was this a better starting line up than the 2004/5 side? I'd say so.

Re: Liverpool FC Thread: Numero Deux
I'd say so, I think it was stronger in depth as well.
The best first XI from recent memory was 08/09 though.
Reina
Arbeloa
Carragher
Agger
Riise
Mascherano
Alonso
Kuyt
Gerrard
Benayoun
Torres
I think at the time that was the best first XI in the league, just had no depth at all.

Interesting words from Houllier at the start on Heskey:
"The boy needs to believe in himself and be more selfish"
Something Heskey never really grasped.

I'm on the final game now. Heskey was absolutely awesome that season, just below world class I'd say, if he had kept that kind of play up we'd remember him as one of the best strikers the Premier League has seen. I think that season he was better than Owen and Fowler.

No, he's in some of the United games.
They might have dubbed it out of the original video for some reason.

Jari Litmanen was always seen by many back then as the final piece of the puzzle for Liverpool.
Never quite worked out for some reason.

Re: Liverpool FC Thread: Numero Deux
Found out today that we tried to sign Alan Shearer in 03/04 when his contract was running out, Houillier saw the signing as McAllister-esque.
We were also apparently offered Ronaldo (of the Cristiano variety) for £4 million, not long before United signed him for £12m, but we saw that as too much and didn't think we needed him after signing Sinama-Pongolle and Anthony Le Tallec.

Re: Liverpool FC Thread: Numero Deux
this was in the Metro
Asmir Begovic has confirmed he is on his way to Liverpool this summer and says he hopes the transfer will be completed in the next few weeks.
The Stoke goalkeeper appeared to be close to sealing a switch to Anfield earlier this week, but the move seemingly hit the buffers over a fee.
However, in an interview with the Bosnian media Begovic has confirmed he expects to be a Liverpool player by the time they return for pre-season in early June.
'I'll start preparing on July 10, with all the players of Liverpool,' he said.
It is thought that negotiations are at an advanced stage, with the 25-year-old ready to sign a four-year deal to act as competition to first-choice goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
Stoke had previously slapped a £15million valuation on Begovic, but are believed to be willing to accept something in the region of £6million.
