So Fed gets a best-ever 40th win at year-end championships and pulls ahead of McEnroe in career victories. The records continue to tumble....

68 minutes, federer won't be complaining about fatigue after that. Didn't see it, was he brilliant or was tipsy having an off day (or both)?

Interesting stat:
Tipsarevic hasn't had a breakpoint against the Federer serve since their match at the AO 2008.

Well that was pretty but not very exciting. What Federer needs is a rival who can push him. Someone that's an equal. Someone that can also play pretty tennis but perhaps for contrast a different style of pretty. Mmm. Maybe that's too much to ask?

Tipsy wasn't near his best as he's quite ill I read. Federer was a couple of levels above him today and playing his B- game. Tipsy's serve was pretty woeful today and that really cost him.

If Tipsy withdraws, Gasquet may be able to provide much more entertainment.

Re: ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS- LIVE MATCH THREAD
I actually thought Tipsy played pretty well, he certainly didn't disgrace himself. Agreed, his serve stats weren't good enough to trouble Federer, but he was keeping close in many of the rallies and could have beaten a lot of lesser players today.
A solid, albeit pretty routine tournament opener for Federer, but what caught my attention more than his on-court performance was a particular sentence in the post-match interview/chat.......
"It's been a great career"
A casual and fairly unremarkable comment by Fed OR ....... a significant use of the past tense .... ??
Very nice speech by Novak when accepting his World No 1 Trophy and Arthur Ashe award

I did not hear the post-match interview. Very strange comment indeed, Lags.

I think it was in response to the 'now you've broken Lendl's record of matches won at this championship, is there any record you are still chasing?' - or words to that effect.
Hopefully not a goodbye!!

The courts are playing like treacle.
This propensity for slow courts is getting absurd. Most points seem to be ending with UE's.

Go Ferrer, if there is one guy I'd like to get a GS (after Murray) it's Ferrer.
The most well behaved guy on tour and an amazing fighter with the added spice of boring baseline play.

Agree emancipator, Cash said if you rub your hands on the court you would scuff them so rough as they are with all the sand in the paint. Why does everything have to be slow? This will suit Ferrer much more than before.

Yeah, Ferrer would have been a beast this year - if he hadn't already played 15 matches in the last three weeks

Unfortunately for Ferrer I think the slow courts may be a step too far for him this year.

Indeed, he may become somewhat anodyne in th 3rd given Johnny Martin is getting more into it now.

Wow, Cowan looks more like Wallace/Grommit each time I see him.
Ferrer must be running on empty as TP says...he needs an even bigger and longer racquet in the 3rd to have any chance.

I am simply amazed by Ferrer; how the hell does he do it, still, the wheels have got to come off at some point, perhaps not today, but soon.

Doesn't look the case in this match atleast, inspite of Del boy playing and trying his best, the beast is grinding Del Boy out of the match.

He certainly do put his name for punters to bet against it, I haven't seen in my tennis viewing history a fitter 31 than Ferrer [i.e Fit and capable of grinding out every point for a huge marathon match].

I do feel for JMDP, he is belting the ball, but it keeps coming back. He just can't put it away. I think he's at a significant disadvantage on such a slow surface.

I'd say when in good health Rafa is fitter than Daveed, although he is up there.

its hard to say 2bh because when people talk about that incredible fitness with nadal he plays those incredibly long matches that are followed by incredible recoveries the following match when playing the top guys for example.
With ferrer you never see the 5 setters against the top guys because he can't push them there due to real lack of weapons. Perhaps if we saw a 5 setter vs rafa then we could really gauge his fitness against the fittest guys.

Re: ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS- LIVE MATCH THREAD
This is a tough one to predict!
I wouldn't say he was the fittest at all, he quite often breaks down in really long matches. I don't believe he would have lasted to the same level as Nadal in any of Nadal's 5+ hour matches, e.g Rome 2005 or 2006.

Re: ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS- LIVE MATCH THREAD
I didn't think for a second DelPo could hold serve here and he hasn't. He nearly lost it serving for the 2nd set.
Maybe Ferrer has the best stamina throughout the year. He might break down in the really long matches but he seems to be consistently "fresh" (I really hate that word). Even Djokovic broke down last year at the O2 and he's incredible.

Exactly LS. Rafa has won back to back 5 set marathons in the semis and finals of slams, and still kept that intensity and running power. Ferret has never been successful enough to show he can do that.
That's why I edge it to Rafa.

Wow,,,that one surprised me.
Well done Ferrer.
Speaking of terms being used I don't like...I hate hearing him called "The Spanish Terrier". He would just say "No, I'm David Ferrer".
