Re: V2 WWC 2012 Round 2 Group 6
Punk's the obvious choice, but I went for Ryder. 12 months ago, Ryder was just getting into full flow with his "Z! True Long Island Story" YouTube show, and in the space of 12 months he's gone from a low carder, to being a big part of the Cena v Kane feud, to finding his place as a genuine face mid carder. He was incredibly over in that time and while Punk should be everyone's first choice, Ryder is my somewhat tactical vote.
James Storm I never really got behind with the Beer Money split, I was and am more of a Bobby Roode fan. And Randy Orton's just so, meh.

Storm has had an amazing transformation this year so deserves second spot but I cant see anyone from either roster getting close to what Punk has achieved this year.
Storm would do amazing in WWE.

So at this stage what are people's thoughts: is punk likely to retain his crown as the v2 WWC champion or will Daniel Bryan or Heath Slater take his spot?

Well Punk has arguably improved on last year, being Champion the whole time helps but he has managed to stay relevent the whole time. If Cena or Orton were champ for 365 days, it would have gotten stale by now but it isn't for Punk.

The question is "Who has generated the best work over the last 12 months?"
It's a no contest.

Punk, no doubt, to be honest after the year he's had could have been in against a prime Austin and I would have still considered voting for him. Cant believe anyone would vote for anyone else in this group over Punk

Punk, it's a no contest, the guy has been fantastic all year and particualry since his heel turn, he's carrying WWE on his own in a way that it hasn't been carried since Hart and HBK in the darkest days of the early 90's, just through sheer force of talent.
From an in ring perspective, over the past year, IMO at least, he has had PPV match of the night at Survivors 2011, TLC, Elimination Chamber, Over the Limit, No Way Out, Money in the Bank, Night of Champions and again last night he had another contender at Survivors 2012, plus notable TV matches, against Mark Henry post WM and Cena at Raw 1000 (im sure there were a few more but they don't as easily spring to mind).
His mic work to, very good as a face but totally on a different level since his heel turn.
I could go on but frankly Punk is well on his way to becoming an ATG, if he isn't there already, great in the ring, great on the mic, great feuds with Cena, Ryback, Foley and Lawler running almost simaltaniously, Punk has to be the favorite to win this, frankly only Bryan, Aries and of course Slater are contenders.

Or voting tactically. I voted Punk, but I kind of wish I'd gone for Ryder just because I can imagine Adam's face if Ryder went through over Storm

Storm over punk for me. Based on the last year storm has been world champion, had a stunningly good feud with Roode and had potentially the match of the year at bfg.
Punk as a face didn't work, as a heel he has needed hayman to really become interesting. I'm sorry to all the punk fanboys but its not been as monumental a year as 2011 was for punk. In fact if punk wins this whole tournament it's quite a catastrophe.
Roode
Aries
Storm
Bully Ray
Punk
That is the top five for me, in that order as well.

Couldn't disagree more Gregers, Punk's face turn was nearly as much of a blow out as you say it is, at least not IMO anyways, while I agree that he's a more natural heel, the fact he's such an outstanding heel dosn't diminsh he was more than capable of playing a top line babyface, still wrestling and talking very well. Personally I'd say the topline face is probably the most difficult role to suceed and remain popular, particuarly among the adult male audience which is a bit of a contradiction as those are the same people who are Punk's biggest fans, this for me anyway is the reason Punk's face run came off so flat. I certainally cannot find fault with any of his matches, promos or feuds. Also I can't agree with your assesment that Punk's heel turn didn't become interesting until he sided with Heyman, Punk was simmering along nicely up until that point, with one of the best slow burn heel turns WWE have done in a long time, for me Heyman has only added to the many layers of Punk's character, he's not a man who needs a manager such as Heyman and instead they have become an enjoyable double act rather than one carrying the other.
Also if you're wanting to talk about flopping babyface world title runs, may I suggest you take a look at No 2 on your list, while I'll admit TNA's booking was not in the least bit helpful, any critisims you want to throw at Punk's babyface run can equally apply to Aries and I would say that his foray with the world title has probably set him back at least 6 months.

Clearly punk is going to retain this award as he has been champion for a year and in the last 6 months been the main event, clearly this is going to trump a disasterous run with Nexus, good promo/story into MITB and underwhelming run afterwards.
