India v England, Second Test, Wankhede Stadium Mumbai
First topic message reminder :
So the 2nd test of the 4 match series between India and England is getting underway at Mumbai's Wankhede stadium from tomorrow. The hosts are leading the series after their win in the first test at Ahmedabad.
The track is expected to have assistance for spinners, but the possible bounce from the track and proximity to the sea might offer something for the seamers as well. The pitch was previously used in a Ranji match where Sachin Tendulkar and Ajinkya Rahane had scored hundreds.
The weather is expected to stay good.
Both sides have injury concerns going into the match. Fast bowler Umesh Yadav is unlikely to be risked as he's not fully recovered from the back problems that necessitated calling up Ashok Dinda as cover for the 2nd match in a row. However Dinda, who had covered for Ishant Sharma is unlikely to make it to the playing side, Ishant should be the prefered option. This will be Virender Sehwag's hundredth test. India probable side.
Virender Sehwag
Gautam Gambhir
Cheteshwar Pujara
Sachin Tendulkar
Virat Kohli
Yuvraj Singh
Mahendra Singh Dhoni
Ravichandran Ashwin
Zaheer Khan
Ishant Sharma
Pragyan Ojha.
As for England Ian Bell is unavailable for selection as he's on paternity leave. Stuart Broad has some fitness concerns. Tim Bresnan had a shocker of a match last time round, continuing a prolonged form slump. Steven Finn continues to be unfit. Cricinfo seems to think that Eoin Morgan, and Jonny Bairstow is likely to make it to the side in place of Bell.
England probable
Alastair Cook
Nick Compton
Jonathan Trott
Kevin Pietersen
Eoin Morgan/Jonny Bairstow
Samit Patel
Matt Prior
Stuart Broad?
Graeme Swann
James Anderson
Monty Panesar.
In 2006 England won at Mumbai on the back of an all-round performance from captain Andrew Flintoff and good bowling performances from James Anderson and Shaun Udal. The last test at the venue produced a very exciting match that finished as a draw with the scores leveled.

But wait....under the flower-favorites-preservation policy Monty would be dropped at the drop of a hat for dropping a catch...and replaced with Bresnan....while anderson gets to drop one per ining and not be dropped for such misdemenours.
Well as I said yesterday......I would love a contest...but wouldn't mind England selectorial misfirings making it one sided.
What a suprise. I havent read any comments of you slating Broad and Flower before KP-fan? I am truely shocked that you would say such things.
Can you please remind me who Panesar bowling in tandem with in the UAE when he was getting those wickets and looking most threatening? I believe that it was Broad who was complimenting Panesar so well?

Looking forward to watching tomorrows play. this is a real test match with uncertainty over who has the upperhand.
On a slightly different note i do wish the authorities and groundsmen would understand that pitches assisting the bowlers produce far more interesting spectacles than flat tracks where 450+ becomes a par score. This match has the makings of an excellent test match even if it might not last intorno the fifth day. therefore some kudos should go to doni for asking for more life in the pitches.

+1 LivinginItaly.
I also think that Dhoni and the groundsmen should get credit here, this track will produce a result. Dhoni has taken a slight risk if he has asked for this track as it may backfire on him. He could easily settle for tracks that will produce draws and win the series 1-0.

sarcasm here is like water on duck's back......and isn't the call of the hour...but honesty.
they get slated...as you call it...and criticized as I call it.... based on facts...and performance.....multiple times....shows they are the worst performers in most outings

and look at the irony.....one lived on since that debacle to date.......without performing.... while the bigger star from that show was dropped simply one game after that series.

Well now, Broad is one of the highest wicket takers in test cricket in the last 18 months but i guess that means nothing eh KP_fan...
I actually think that you are a very astute poster when it comes to cricket as a game but your hatred of Broad, Flower and your huge love for KP does cloud your judgment at times.
May i suggest that you just give the hatred and the love ins a miss and soley post about cricket as a game? You do have some great insights...

and why would I love KP....he is not married to my sister ...or hate Broad or Flower....they are not harrssing my sister eitehr
It is not personal love or hatred driving my opinion towards them.....as you make it appear.
But rather their sporting performance and public behaviour that wins my admiration...such as KP's batting and his self esteem.
or incurs my criticism....such as Broad's, Bresnan, Bopara and Patel's medocrity in cricket and irresponsible twittering...and worse Flower's agenda / defensive-ness that keeps picking them.
8 tests lost this year with 2 more to go.......and an impending worst year in the history of English cricket......are bottmline facts
If these guys listed above perform...or Flower delivers the bottomline...then my criticism of them will stop.

Good first 30 mins, took over that for the 1st 4 (still only 1), Panesar looked very good, Don't understand why Swann didn't open the bowling today. As I type Panesar's just got Arshwin LBW for 68, now 280-7.

Harbhajan is finally gone for 21, LBW to Swann. Giving Swann his 200th test wicket. Panesar is beginning to look tired and compared to this morning is beginning to bowl a few looser deliveries.

And now Pujara's gone for a magnificent 135, another brilliant innings by the young man, and the first time England have got him out this series, after he was stumped by Prior off Swann.

well all out for 327. Looks like a very good score on that pitch, but not a massive score. England need to have a positive mentality, two big partnerships will keep us in this game. If we bat well we can reach parity, or even get a lead. There again england are capable of being bowled out for less than 150 on this pitch. either way should be hugely exciting and tense rest of the day.

Zaheer is out for 11 caught at short leg (though he didn't look like he got his bat to the ball), with again Swann getting the wicket. So India's 1st innings ends at 327 all out. After yesterday's early events, India battled back excellently setting a tricky score. Pujara again batting an excellent innings, Ashwin & Harbjahan both contributing well. England's bowled well, fielded was an improvement. Slightly worryingly 9 wickets went to spinners, on a pitch that everybody thinks Is going to deteriorate more during the match.

It's important with all the talk of spin that we don't relax too much against zaheer. He is still a dangerous threat.

well i am hoping for the top order to dig deep- time isnt an issue !
I think its about time we turned up for once- we have been below par for a year- and the thing is the lads shouldnt have any excuses not being able to play spin considering we have some of the best spinners to practise against anyway!!

Just watching the replay of the wickets fallen today. Is it only me that takes great delight in bad decisions going against India? Decisions that would be so obviously overturned by the drs system.

The last wicket to fall, that of Zaheer, was so clearly not out. The ball was literally inches away from bat and gloves, caught off the pad but given out.

These too have done well but its a worry that Compton hasnt been able to score when the ball wasnt turning, because we really couldve used those cheap runs whilst on offer.
This pitch is only going to offer more for the spinners as it goes on

Tea time D2:
well england fought hard so far....but they just don't play spin naturally.
Compton might finish the series with an average of 20 something...but he tries very, very hard.....and has a good test match temperament and technique that will hold him in good stead elsewhere.
One batsman other than Cook has to get a big 50...for Eng to get 250ish...will it be KP ?

Against a side with 1 and half left arm spinners in it? Youd get better odds on Samit Patel
That aside England are in a position to make a competitive first innings total here, but you do feel they are chasing the game already

Just shows how important India's lower order runs were. Facing a 1st innings total of 250 or less here would put a different complexion on the situation.

Crucial session now for England which may well shape the outcome of this Test.
A good 2 hours and we're looking at parity and beyond. A good session now for India and a 2-0 series lead will seem very likely ....

Exactly.
That's why I was disappointed at the end of day one. We weren't in a bad position but it wasn't anywhere as near as might have been reasonably hoped having reduced India to 169-6. Certainly I don't see our last 4 wickets adding 150 odd runs.

I can see the likes of broad and swann getting some quick runs on here playing attacking shots in the right situation i.e. if we have already overhauled their total. But I agree I can't see our last four adding more than 50 runs on this pitch in a difficult situation let alone 150.

Real heart in the mouth stuff when kp is facing spin, but at least he is scoring runs. If he can continue he will start to put pressure on india as while he is batting and scoring their total will start to appear smaller in their minds

Re: India v England, Second Test, Wankhede Stadium Mumbai
Feel like KP is playing the right way for him. His eyes in, and he has the ability to score off any bowling...so do it. At some point a ball will have his name on it, but that would be the case if he wasnt playing shots. 40 runs is a big chunk in this game, Englands innings is looking healthier.
Cook though is riding his luck with the spin
