Win the 1872 cup? ( the Glasgow / Edinburgh derbies for those who don't know or don't care )
Or will they both contrive to lose somehow? ruddy useless enought to lose both of them

I'm going for a 0-0 draw over both legs.
Or maybe both teams will be so bad that the laws of the universe will reverse themselves and we'll suddenly end up with some champagne rugby and outrageous skill!
Yeah it'll be 0-0.

Re: So can a scottish club......................
It is inevitable to bring up some kinda score though.
Penalty try (some team stuff up a scrum somewhere close to the line, or a maul is pulled down.
Read or yellow card. ( the team with the numerical advantage scores somehow)
Penalty right in front of the posts (10 meters out)
Dropgoal, ten meters out.

Re: So can a scottish club......................
Could Townsend and Bradley be foced to play for Glasgow and Edinburgh respectively?
That way the players could ensure that their esteemed leaders need to take enforced bed rest for a few weeks afterwards allowing the players to coach themselves into some kind of form by the six nations!
Hang on that wont work. With Scott Johnson and Matt Taylor in charge it doesnt matter what form they are in, they are still in line for their third consecutive wooden spoon!

I can't believe there's no talent at all to call on in the borders. You guys must be tearing your hair out. Very sad state of affairs that needs sorting. Is there no coaching worth having up there?

No one ready for the national team. Maybe some for Edinburgh and Glasgow. Some of the candidates have rather fallen out with the SRU tho

Personally I don't want to see Edinburgh hobble Glasgow's chances of getting back into a top 4 slot. Sorry.
Surely for the sake of Scottish rugby, Edinburgh should contrive to lose both games by a cricket score.

Re: So can a scottish club......................
soooooooo....
predicted lineups?
Preferred --------- likely
Tonks --------- Tonks Self explanatory. Player of the season so far
Brown ----------- Brown As long as its not Jones
Funf ---------- De Luca If De Luca has a on day, fair enough, club form last season exemplary
Scott ---------- Scott Wouldnt mind King either, Scotts about 2 stone heavier and 2 yards slower than last season
Viss ---------- Viss Self explanatory. Hasnt failed to score in a league game this season
Hunter ---------- Laidlaw Hunter our form 10. Leonard needs gametime too.
Laidlaw --------- Rees Showed more in paris than rees in the 9 jersey.
Yapp ------- Yapp pleasantly surprised with yappy, meant to be a poor signing, but hes been decent so far
Titterell ---------- Ford Bugger off till you can throw. Seriously.
Nel ---------- Cross Not end of world if cross gets nod, his scrummaging has improved
Gilchrist ---------- Gilchrist Only one who looked up for a fight the other night. Scotland place up for grabs
VDW ---------- Cox Want to see more of Izak, seems to be pretty well rounded player
Cox --------- Denton Denton can go learn to protect the ball in contact. Cox's graft to counter the smellies
Grant --------- Grant Scotland place for grabs. Fusaro vs Grant a national trial. Similar players, will Grants xp win?
Rambo --------- Talei Happy either way, Rambo will slip through weegie nets like a bar of soap, Talei'l run through them
Lawrie Titterrell Lawries just back from injury, maybe another week of prem rugby for him
Chunk Chunk I like em big, i like em chunky
Cross Nel see starting lineup
Parker VDW Parker had a slow start, but stepping up now in loose play. With Kellock out, Lineout safer.
Watson Basilia Watson perhaps too specialised, but dang nabbit this kid needs gametime.
Leck Leck I quite like Leck. Hes nothing flashy, but has an unreal pass on him.
Leonard Francis 1 of the players of the JWC, GET HIM SOME FLUMPING GAMETIME
King Fife Scotts being coached into a crash ball. King at least can resist attempts to do the same to him thanks to his stature.

Not looking forward to seeing the flying Fijian on the huge Murrayfield pitch.
Tried to think of what areas Edinburgh can look to dominate Glasgow and all I can think of is goal kicking...

Re: So can a scottish club......................
Clutching at straws here, but S Lamont's positioning at centre can be precarious defensively, and Jackson was taking the ball incredibly flat against Castres and offloading, which offers up the chance of an interception.
We are going to need Rees to be all over Matawalu though, and disrupt the Glasgow ball at every opportunity. His passing from the floor isn't his strength, and our midfield needs to come forward at breakneck speed to close down Jackson and Horne.
Cut them off at source. The more DTH, Maitland and Hogg see of the ball, the more trouble we'll be in, as we don't like to tackle out wide.
Having watched Glasgow against Castres, I can't see us breaking them down. Not the way we've been playing this season.

Obviously I want Glasgow to win, but more than this I really want them to put in an entertaining performance. The rugby at Scotstoun has been the real let down - the facilities have been generally very good! If it is a crap dour kick and knock on affair I will be really annoyed. I've seen plenty of these this season already.

My best mate (who is Welsh, for his sins) and I have an agreement that, for one day a year (round about February/March time) all friendship goes out the window in favour of the most vile, belligerant, and confrontational rivalry that we can muster. Anything said or done that day is fair, but is not to be repeated afterwards, and there are no recriminations.
I think we'll need something similar on this board over the next couple weeks.
Just saying.

I'd take an Edinburgh 3-0 win via a drop goal deflecting off Chunk's erse at this stage to be honest!

Re: So can a scottish club......................
I think FES has got the Warriors line up just about right, not really concerned about the MFL's as I cannot remember the last time they mustered half the grit and courage Glasgow showed in Castres. Although depending on fitness Dunbar and/or G-Dog could feature.
There seems to have been a lot of Pte Fraser-isms concerning Toonie lately but contrary to the Cassandras we are not doomed! Is it the old Trainspotting theme where unless we are world beaters then "being Scottish is Poopie"? Glasgow had an excellent, record breaking, run then lost their way and then were an inch away from winning in France. Our metrosexual neebors would kill to be in our position.
As for Toonies "eccentric" selections; we now have Kennedy, Wight,Horne, Murchie, Seymour, Niko all competing for a place in the backs. When did we last see this much talent coming through?
I predict two comfortable wins and a top four finish while the MFL's will continue to wallow in the slime of their overinflated self-esteem.(i trust IanBru approves of the tone)

One of the straps on my stab vest is broken so probably going to have to give it a miss.
Plus I'm working through in Edinburgh just now having worked in Glasgow for 2 years and my sense of smell is only just coming back to me!

13. Bennett
12. Dunbar
11. Van Der Merwe
10. Weir
9. Kennedy
8. Strauss

The scary thing is that although the Edinburgh team got to the semi-final of the Heineken Cup the only players that would get into the Glasgow team are Visser, Ford and maybe Scott and Gilchrist.
My predicted scores:
at Scotstoun: Glasgow by 20-30
at Murrayfield Glasgow by 5-15

That's a bold claim numbers! I don't think there's much individually between the players, it's just that Glasgow play better as a team.
Also think your Glasgow selection is a bit optimistic considering the occasion - your edp 9 instead of two in form internationals, and Mark Bennett making pretty much his first proper Glasgow appearance...

I really hope that is the Glasgow team!
No Cusack, Swinson, Wilson, Matawalu, Horne or S Lamont - I'd certainly take that side to play Edinburgh. It would increase our chances of winning from slim to svelte.

Aye Radge man like to think I am more of an philosopher than a scientist. Therefore, I think, therefore I am as that famous French FH Descartes once put it. I will ask, if I may borrow from Altheides, with reference to the challenge - if anyone asks if you can do something, have only two answers: 'yes' and 'not yet'

come back when you got a mutha flippin T-rex in the Kelvingrove. Then we'll talk.
Mate, you can keep your friggin' T-Rex. It is yesterday's dinosaur. When your joke of a university creates a real-life, working, self-aware Optimus Prime then maybe I'll be impressed. Until then you're just Bath with a castle.

Re: So can a scottish club......................
yea, its all a code.
21st december = end of the world
Scotstoun leg of 1872 cup = 21st december = end of the world for people of scotstoun = losing to the mighty Burgh on their own patch.
And then I activate Higgsies doomsday device.

Jeebus, can we all get this straight pls? - he's the MessiahRDW_Scotland wrote:That's a bold claim numbers! I don't think there's much individually between the players, it's just that Glasgow play better as a team.
Also think your Glasgow selection is a bit optimistic considering the occasion - your edp 9 instead of two in form internationals, and Mark Bennett making pretty much his first proper Glasgow appearance...

Re: So can a scottish club......................
Should we start a shiny new match thread when the teams are announced or just keep it all on here? Any volunteers??

RDW - good of you to start a match thread to discuss the actual rugby!
Still, it's important to keep this thread going - any chance to discuss the moral, social and parental shortcomings of the Murrayfield haw haw brigade.

Happy with that IanBru - use the other one for the rugby and this one to take chunks out of each other!

Is that the same Murrayfield haw haw brigade that still call the shots in Glasgow?
After all they did appoint Gregor Townsend as the boss man through in Weagie Land.

I am glad to see this pot is simmering gently. Having been born in Glasgow and studied in Edinburgh ( I use the term loosely) I feel I can rise above the tawdry insults emanating from our eastern brethren. Also Mrs Pip says that after several years of steady feeding I am back to my pre-Edinburgh weight, however I still have the nightmares from which I wake up screaming," No I've not had my tea!"

I'm quit liking that all of the great unwashed are predicting a cricket score for the weedge - there's gonna be a lot of egg on face if they lose or only scrape out a narrow victory!

Re: So can a scottish club......................
I do believe that is the sound of straws being clutched. Actually there is only one score that matters and that one point more than the opposition. The sad fact is that this MFL collection have forgotten how to fight and win. Too busy Knitting twin-sets in Morningside cappuccino tastings while reveling in the gritty realism of J k Rowling's fiction. Even when playing dross Glasgow know how to win.RDW_Scotland wrote:I'm quit liking that all of the great unwashed are predicting a cricket score for the weedge - there's gonna be a lot of egg on face if they lose or only scrape out a narrow victory!
