What is the greatest Beat'em up Series
Greatest Beat'em up Series
With the release of the Mighty Mortal Kombat 8, I was wondering what people saw as the greatest series in the beat'em up genre

It's a really tough choice for me, i'd rather sit my ass on the fence but suppose i better choose one. It's between Mortal Combat, Street Fighter and Tekken. I'll probably change my mind from day to day but this time will go with Street Fighter.

Tekken for me.
Tekken 3 remains one of the greatest games ever made, not just in the beatemup genre but any genre.

Has to be MK for me. Grew up on the SNES versions of 1 2 & 3, had PC versions of the rest until I got a laptop.
Absolute class. Thinking about my 1 hour 37 minute winning streak in an arcade in Edinburgh on MKII as a kid still brings me goosebumps!

What about Killer Instinct with its 'Killer Combo!', Virtual Fighter or Soul Blade?
Of all though it has to be Street Fighter. Many a 10p got wasted in the arcades in my youth on that.

Re: Greatest Beat'em up Series
I was gonna write Killer Instinct!
I've got my SNES set up at my Uni digs & have mastered Fulgore over a number of years of sore thumbs! Ultra Combo, Humiliation, Death Cannon.
Killer Instinct needed an amazing couple of sequels, sadly didn't happen as the first one was the definitive and best IMO.

SOUL CALIBUR is the greatest beat em up series, and its a crime that you had not thought of putting it up.

Whats the big deal about Tekken? Complete and utter boring, button bashing, no skill trash. And I think the only reason we like Street Fighter is because we all played it when we were younger. MK hands down

Smash Brothers for me! The 64 version was superb and the Wii version is great fun. Although Captain Falcon was so overpowered...

Rise of the Robots (SNES). Nah, just kidding. I'd go for Soul Calibur. Criminal that the OP missed it off yet included Smash Bros!! Honourable mention should go to Power Stone on the Dreamcast. Only two installments, but a cracking game and what a console.
