Interesting story
Morning,
I found this story which I found quite interesting. It is a few weeks old but worth a read nevertheless. Those of you with a scientific mind will like it.
I won't pretend I understood the full science behind it but that says more about me than anything.

Not sure about all this evolution nonsense to be honest.
If humans are evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?

Because we didn't evolve from monkeys?
Humans did not evolve from monkeys. Humans are more closely related to modern apes than to monkeys, but we didn't evolve from apes, either. Humans share a common ancestor with modern African apes, like gorillas and chimpanzees. Scientists believe this common ancestor existed 5 to 8 million years ago. Shortly thereafter, the species diverged into two separate lineages. One of these lineages ultimately evolved into gorillas and chimps, and the other evolved into early human ancestors called hominids.

Union there is more scientific merit attached to that theory than there is towards 'Creationism' and 'God' fairytales.

Re: Interesting story
Interesting fact from one of Richard Dawkins books (I thnk it was the Selfish Gene).
If you and a chimpanzee stood next to each other and each of you held onto the hand of your mother and in turn, your mother and the chimpanzee's mother held onto the hand of their respective mothers and so on and so on until the two lines of respective ancestors was roughly 150 miles long, you'd reach the common ancestor of you and the chimpanzee.
The distance for Lumbering Jack is about 25 yards.

That is interesting, superfly, but I'd stop short of calling it a fact.

This theory would suggest it was 50/50.

The creation of an evolutionary branch does not mean that the species it came from ends completely. Otherwise we only have one species at any one time, which is blatantly absurd.

Re: Interesting story
I'd think early human fought much in the same as chimps (clubbing kicking and kicking). I also would have thought that the dexterity of the hand was simply due to the use of tools, and with the ever increasing complexity of tools came more flexible fingers.....dumb early humans may have utilised this physical advantage to make a fist, but surely smart humans used it to throw objects, swing clubs and stab sharp instruments into foes?
What is interesting though, is that if we all evolved from a single bacteria multiplying and splitting into various bacterial branches before forming single cell organisms and then eventually much more complex forms of life, then each of our ancestral lineages can be traced back, undisturbed, for millions and millions of years. Think about how fortunate you are.....
... each of your distant ancestors, during their evolution, was afforded a "deformational advantage" which allowed them to survive long enough to reproduce (and pass on their DNA to their offspring). This remarkable, unbroken, "biological information chain", spanning millions and millions of years has produced you.
Since the beginning, if any of your ancestors had been killed before they had passed on their DNA (irrespective of whether they were bacteria, early mammal or human), or passed on the "wrong" biological mutation or physical difference, then you would not be here now.
Each one of them had that "little bit of something" that allowed them to avoid death long enough to eventually create.... YOU.

Re: Interesting story
i think in fighting between the same "tribes" would have been with fists, if they clubbed each other over food/mate/status squabbles then they wouldn't have lasted long. I'm sure fingers evolved for dexterity but the ability to make a fist probably did come from the need to protect the hands when punching

Difference with Gordy is that he has a deformational disadvantage.

How long would the distance be for the average Scottish person?

If the population of China was to walk past you in single file, the line would never end.

I'm in Edinburgh so that would probably make mine and the chimpanzee's common ancestor a Geordie.

In today's enlightened age, Gordy would be a protected species, or at least, I hope, endangered.

You talk as though tribes don't wipe each other out?
In the past there was a big tribe called the Spanish, and if memory serves me correct, i think they played a big part in the extinction in some other tribes?

Re: Interesting story
Gypsies don't fight, they use their small fingers to pinch your life force before you collapse, its like Liverpudlians with hubcaps.

In the far far distant past in a isolated murky pond lived the simple gordi.
The gordi, by some ill fated miracle or sick act of god, self multiplied to form gordii.
The simple gordi hasn't changed much since then.
Now it is the malignant parasitic bacteria we see today: Gordy.
Once Gordy invades a space it is difficult to ignore.
If we look closely we can see it sucking the life out of its host, 606V2.

Jeremy Beadle had a really small Winkle.
But on the other hand, it was quite big.

Beadle's lawyer had a nightmare trying to read his will. apparently it was written in shorthand....
