Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
First topic message reminder :
Australian Open 2013:
Information: The Australian Open is a major tennis tournament held annually over the last fortnight of January in Melbourne, Australia. First held in 1905, the tournament is chronologically the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events of the year – the other three being the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. It features men's and women's singles; men's, women's, and mixed doubles and junior's championships; as well as wheelchair, legends and exhibition events. Since 1988 the tournament has been played on hard courts at Melbourne Park.
The Australian Open typically has very high attendance, second only to the US Open. It was also the first Grand Slam tournament to feature indoor play during wet weather or extreme heat with its two primary courts, Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena, equipped with retractable roofs.

Decent enough start by Murray who leads 3-0. Would like to see him a tad more aggressive.

Good come back by Chardy but Murray holds to close the set out.

Murray takes the first set 6-4 (after leading 4-0). I am yet to see the consistency he will need to beat Federer.

Well Chardy is playing good a bit like the way he played against DP, just coz Chardy not seeded doesn't mean he can't play well.

Just a thought on the pink laces as Chardy too is wearing and Fed wore them the other night. I have a feeling this may be something to do with the former Australian cricketer Glenn McGrath's cancer foundation charity which has a theme of incorporating pink into things. They do it a lot in test matches down under with pink wickets etc.

A bit better from Murray in this set but still not hitting with depth. Chardy's level has dipped as well.

Still got more chance of Chardy winning than Hawkeye going a whole tournament without dissing Murray.

some nice returning and Murray takes the second set 6-1. First set went patchy after a fine start, but this one much better.

Wow what goes on with Chardy's ball toss at serve? Murray breaks again and leads 6-4 6-1 - an improved second set from Murray but Chardy's level has dipped.

Unlikely that Chardy the Tardy can recover. After the first set, he has just thrown in atrocious games in the second and third sets unlike in his previous matches.

That's more like it. On the whole a much more convincing performance than his last couple of matches, apart from failing to serve it out! Better not faff around like that if he finds himself serving for the match against Federer!

An improving sort of performance today from Andy. A decent start then got sloppy and started finding his range towards the end.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
there it is, Murray breaks to take it 6-4 6-1 6-2. One thing that will delight Murray is the quality of his returning today. He broke Chardy 8 times in just 13 attempts, and Chardy served pretty well really (66% first serves, average speed just under 200 kph).

Stephens next up, I actually watched their recent match in Hobart (?), and TBH it was very much a case of Robson losing it by making way too many errors. Stephens doesn't really have any huge weapons, and Robson if she plays well has a very decent chance.
I disagree...making lots of errors is very much a part of Robson's game right now.
As we've seen, Stephens is playing tennis at a level higher than Robson, and is fitter and stronger than her too....
Robson may have a chance in future match-ups, but Stephens would deservedly be considered the favourite in any future encounters. Yes, Serena was injured, back as well as ankle now, but it was still a gutsy performance by Sloane. Stephens remains the only player to seriously test Serena in one of the warmup tournaments too. She's one for the future, that's for sure....
Congrats Stephens on beating Serena!
Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
Just watched the Murray match... Wow, how impressive was that? By a mile his best display and nice timing before a semi against probably Roger.
I had put Roger as favourite, but that was based on Murray's so so form. Now I'd say it really will be a 50-50 call. The man who executes better on the day will come through.

It was a better performance Danny but still one or two things there that he can improve on. Much better than his previous two rounds though.
