Australian Open 2013: Match Thread 2
Australian Open 2013:
Information: The Australian Open is a major tennis tournament held annually over the last fortnight of January in Melbourne, Australia. First held in 1905, the tournament is chronologically the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events of the year – the other three being the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. It features men's and women's singles; men's, women's, and mixed doubles and junior's championships; as well as wheelchair, legends and exhibition events. Since 1988 the tournament has been played on hard courts at Melbourne Park.
The Australian Open typically has very high attendance, second only to the US Open. It was also the first Grand Slam tournament to feature indoor play during wet weather or extreme heat with its two primary courts, Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena, equipped with retractable roofs.

Federer takes the first set on a tie-break. Odd set really.

What's your predictions for the semis?
1st semi...I see no chance for Ferrer there, he can't beat Djokovic here.
2nd semi is closer. Federer is on very good form and beat Murray in the last match they played, but Murray will turn up the pressure, he has a positive H2H overall against Fed and maybe he'll now start also beating him in slams.
I fancy Federer and Djokovic to win though.

I can't imagine Ferrer grinding Djokovic down... Let's hope the French Open with be without such an "empty quarter" (we had a Ferrer-Tipsy QF draw now twice in a row).
Federer still needs to get past Tsonga, and if he wants to beat Murray and Djokovic in consecutive matches, he'd better keep it to straight sets against Tsonga.
I would put my money on another Djokovic-Murray slugfest

Tsonga takes the second set 6-4. Just waiting for his bubble to burst. Hey you never know prostaff it could be a Ferrer/Federer slugfest.

Similar to the Wimby match - Fed breaks at first time of asking, then doesn't get a sniff on the Tsonga serve after that.

Tsonga's mindset is key to the outcome here.

Good thing is that Tsonga will always go for 1 shot too many and Roger just has to be astute in pushing it back in. The frenchman will explode himself.

Great play from JWT but appalling from Fed. Hes all over thr place today and shockingly poor. I think the upset is on the cards for sure.

All Federer needs to do is play at around 90% and hang in there and I am sure Tsonga's level will dip or mind will wander. Tsonga playing great so far serving to stay in the third set.

not a good TB from Tsonga, for such a big serve he's generally pretty poor at those. Can he come back? well he'll take heart from the fact he's done it before and the fact that Federer has been a long way below his best so far.

If he is not blazing he doesnt stand a chance today. He is well below his best and Tsonga above the usual level. That miss at the net in the tb was shocking. He is hanging in there but this needs to end in 4. That said a performance like today vs Murray should he win will be akin to the Olympic final scoreline.

Federer escaping with that set in the bag could probably escape from Alcatraz with nothing more than a graze. Balls of steel expels the haters into a sea of jealousy.

Like I said he just needed to hang in there. He was always going to play the big points better than Tsonga. The Frenchman has played very well though but will it be enough?

Tsonga lets it slip and Federer breaks straight back. That weakness in JWT coming to the fore again.

Leaner and meaner matters not one jot I think it is what is between the ears with Jo. That has always been his achilles heel.

this is immense! Im a Federer fan but loving every minute of it! I'm extremely nervous, Tsonga has the ability to take the racket out of your hand. So many winners and force errors from both players, not waiting for a mistake, taking it themselves.

Federer needs to play a few drop shots and get Tsonga away from the baseline, as that is only benefitting the frenchman.

As a Fed fan I hate JFW as much as Roddick fans must have hated RF.
What is going on here... 18-10 Tsonga? FFS nooooooo!

In the past Fed has struggled (and failed) to close out matches after losing several match points - a bit of a mental weak spot IMHO. Interesting to see if he struggles again.
