Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
First topic message reminder :
Australian Open 2013:
Information: The Australian Open is a major tennis tournament held annually over the last fortnight of January in Melbourne, Australia. First held in 1905, the tournament is chronologically the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events of the year – the other three being the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. It features men's and women's singles; men's, women's, and mixed doubles and junior's championships; as well as wheelchair, legends and exhibition events. Since 1988 the tournament has been played on hard courts at Melbourne Park.
The Australian Open typically has very high attendance, second only to the US Open. It was also the first Grand Slam tournament to feature indoor play during wet weather or extreme heat with its two primary courts, Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena, equipped with retractable roofs.

Coming to the net is energy sapping though CC. Wawrinka I think made 69 visits and was successful on 40 of them.
Berdy clearly has mental fragility and if anything his team really need to work on his serve and make sure he feels comfortable with his action. Take Murray, when his faster serves don't work he takes the pace off to increase the success rate.

It was interesting after he hit another backhand winner while stretching/doing the splits and virtually still facing the net - the commentators said "Wow, can you imagine the..." there was a pause, and I waited, unsure of which praise they were going to bestow "...abdominal strength".
Really, that's his secret? Abdominal strength?

Well certainly less energy sapping as running left and right along the baseline for 10+ shot rallies? That is the key for Berdych as it was clear his success came when he hit deep and approached the net.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
I think its hard to come to the net, Novak was hitting the ball with so much depth he was keeping him back. Djokovic played a poor game to get broken and then was dropping the ball short a bit the 2nd set, but sorted it out after that. Berdych served poorly and missed too many forehands

Indeed it is. The timing and speed required for a serve and volley or to even charge the net to put away a volley for someone it is foreign to as an integral part of their play is energy sapping. Berdych I am sure wouldn't mind baseline rallies given it can open the opportunity for a FH winner.
The reason the likes of Federer, Stepanek and Tsonga can do it so well as it is a large part of their overall play.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
The pressure it puts on the returner is enormous, LK. If Berdych was serving close to 190+ kph, Djokovic had very little time to begin with. Wide out or body serves and volleys would take less energy. The court speed is an important factor in such a decision.

Aye it is, but Berdych hits too much of flat serve to vary it up

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
I didn't get to watch the game but I'm very impressed with the result.
Berd is the 5th seed and in good form, having won in straights all tournament. Novak comes back two days after going 12-10 in the 5th and wins fairly comfortably it seems, despite losing a set.
It was quick enough that you wouldn't expect any fatigue issue ahead of the Ferrer match, so that's good news too.
I'd still make Novak the marginal favourite but Fed is looking very dangerous too. Andy strikes me as being a little below his best but I thought that for most of the USO too, and look how that ended up!

What a miserable display by Berdych.. he wasn´t even playing a "top form" Novak.. I seriously do not know how he justifies his ranking. "A never to be slam winner"

I agree. In the last 2 years Berdych has made the final of precisely 1 Masters. The guy ain't got what it takes.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
I'll play devil's advocate here. Tomas Berdych just doesn't have the mental or physical game to win a slam. Sure he can beat the top players in one off games (Federer in US Open, Murray at French Open) but as sure as eggs are eggs a defeat will follow as he doesn't have back-to-back big wins in him. Tsonga also enters this category. If you were to take Federer, Djokovic, Nadal and Murray out of the equation I am sure they'd be a slam winner but that isn't going to happen. They are consistent against the other players in the world though that is why both Berdych and Tsonga are very consistent in slams at reaching 4th Rounds, QF's and the odd semi and final. Berdych has reached 4th Round of slams 12 times, Quarters 3 times, Semis 2 times and Final once. Tsonga is similar with reaching 4th Round 6 times, Quarters four times, Semis 3 times and Final once.

Berdych can only play well against Federer for some reason. But when he plays Djokovic or Nadal he always bends over (can't remember the last time he beat those guys). He has a weak mindset and a gay celebration whenever he beats Federer. You can get away with acting gay against the incredible stylish and classy Federer, but against the more barbarian types like Djokovic and Nadal it makes you look like a fool, guess they are internally grinning whenever they face the big gay-lord.

Maybe Djokovic and Federer were lucky to have Berdych and Tsonga respectively, and not the other way around! I wouldn't quite call them Angstgegners, but they have a decent track record

Berdych beat Federer and Djokovic at W before losing to Nadal. http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Players/Top-Players/Tomas-Berdych.aspx?t=pa&y=2010&m=s&e=540#

Look at his celebration after he beat Federer at Wimbledon. And after he beat him at the US Open. Exact same G-style. No wonder he lost his next match tamely. Murray was laughing. Facing the G-Giant instead of the Mighty Fed, who wouldn't. Unless Berdych goes manly beast mode ala Djokovic he's gonna get spanked and spanked again.

You guys are brutal. He dumped/was dumped by Safarova, got Ester Satorova, and said this of her...
Q. I don't want to embarrass you with a private question, but how different is it to have a girlfriend who was a tennis player compared to a girlfriend who is not a tennis player in terms of practicing or organizing your life? Do you see a difference or not?
TOMAS BERDYCH: Actually, yes, I see big difference. I mean, in the past I was saying that it's probably the best thing just that we are both from the same thing. I didn't have any other experience. But now I can say that this one is way better because, you know, I think it was too much tennis. If you do it like myself, and I'm dealing with everyday work that you have to play, practice, organize this stuff, then winning, losing, handle this situation, it's quite tough to have it from one side. If you have to deal with the same thing from the other side, it was quite too much. So I'm really enjoying that, that it's different, that I met somebody with a different life. It's a nice experience.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
My brief (and hardly earth-shattering!) thoughts just ahead of the last two QF's:
- Murray should have more than enough to take care of Chardy without any major scares ; but Chardy has caused the biggest upset of this AO to date, and the knowledge that he has also beaten Murray will undoubtedly give him hope.
- Federer's impressive form (no sets or even service games lost so far I believe) would indicate that he will come through against Tsonga ; but he showed very similar form in the first four rounds of Wimbledon 2011 before it all unravelled when then facing the same opponent.
Let battle commence

Chardy could have given Murray a good game had he been physically fresh, but stupid scheduling by himself to play both doubles and singles is not gonna help him against Murray.
Murray to win with most likely score of 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, Chardy might not even turn up or retire in the mid match.
Tsonga -Fed could be close, and I still think Fed might go down before semi's and if Tsonga is on song he could well take him down.

It's a difficult one I guess for a player like Chardy. He could have drawn Djokovic in R1 and have travelled all the way to Australia to be back on the plane on Monday morning. Plus his form in the warm-up tournaments wouldn't have exactly hinted at a run to the Quarters.
