Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
First topic message reminder :
Australian Open 2013:
Information: The Australian Open is a major tennis tournament held annually over the last fortnight of January in Melbourne, Australia. First held in 1905, the tournament is chronologically the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events of the year – the other three being the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. It features men's and women's singles; men's, women's, and mixed doubles and junior's championships; as well as wheelchair, legends and exhibition events. Since 1988 the tournament has been played on hard courts at Melbourne Park.
The Australian Open typically has very high attendance, second only to the US Open. It was also the first Grand Slam tournament to feature indoor play during wet weather or extreme heat with its two primary courts, Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena, equipped with retractable roofs.

Got a bit too deep the first couple of games of this set, but now back on the baseline and dictating. I'm 10 minutes away from bed safe in the knowledge he's through.

Florian Mayer has lost the second set v someone and is now 2 sets to 0 down.
Laugh of the day goes to Kimiko Date-Krumm who's spanking Petrova at the moment. Serve for the match and a second set bagel.

A decent enough start from Andy Murray and although a slight dip he is back in the ascendany. Hopefully, he can close this out with the minimum fuss as conditions look pretty tough.

another quietly impressive set from Murray, sticking to his aggressive gameplan, but helped along towards the back end of that set by some pretty ordinary play from his opponent. Murray leads 6-3 6-1.

Plus Mayer is going to have to at least go the distance here to stay in the tournament which won't help him.

That will do nicely. Andy wins 6-3 6-1 6-3 wrapping it up in an hour and a half. He steam-rollered a player who has given him problems in the past. I think that just shows the strides Andy has made in the last year.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
what I really loved about that match from Murray was the attitude. In past times against someone like Haase you'd see Murray two or three yards behind the baseline most of the time, Haase being the aggressor. Here it was Murray aggressing, playing on the baseline, and Haase remarkably being pushed back way behind it. Exactly what Lendl wanted: I remember him saying that Murray had to get used to playing aggressive in the early rounds so that he was ready to be more aggressive against Fed, Djokovic or Nadal, and that's exactly what Murray did today, so Lendl will be delighted.
Also, the return of serve was superb, Haase has a big first serve but was winning barely half the points behind it, just brilliant returning

Note to the panicking Fed fans, Milos Raonic has lost the first set 6-3 against Czech Jan Hajek. Early days I know but I did say I could see him not even getting to the Fourth Round where he is scheduled to face Roger Federer.

Raonic loses the first set to Hajek, didn't see that one coming. I'm off to grab some much needed sleep, Robson on in a couple of hours

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
Robson through 6-2 6-3 against Oudin. Some good numbers for Robson really (28 winners, though a slightly too high 30 UEs, 60% first serves, broke her opponent 5 times in 9 return games), not bad at all. Sorry to be harsh too, but Oudin should be embarrassed by her physical condition, for a so-called professional athlete.
Robson has Kvitova in the next round, really tough match, battle of the lefties. Feel Kvitova really takes advantage of her left-handedness (perhaps more so than Robson) so will be interesting to see how she copes with another leftie. Also worth noting that Kvitova had to battle through in three sets (admittedly against the tough Schiavone).

Rosol wins. Gasquet in complete control against Montanes, Simon wins. Davydenko down a set against Sela.
Haas-Nieminen is interesting now in the fourth set 3-2.

Nothing like the old double bagel. Come on Victoria, keep up!!
Haas has gone as has Bellucci who was on the wrong end of a hiding. How bad a server do you have to be to lose sets 6-1 and 6-2 to Raonic (Hajek did)? That's shocking.

Sad about Tommy Haas - how disappointing is Bellucci? He can play sublimely, but his form is so erratic.

Remember though HM I wouldn’t rate his opposition too high today. Mannarino was beaten at Queens Club by James Ward last year I do believe.

Mannarino took a set off DP last year and beat him at Queens (before losing to Ward). That said, he was never likely to give DP much problem. Efficient performance, nothing more.

When would the phrase "be as ten" ever be used? I can't think of a single circumstance when I would use it. Darn technology!!
The potential 4th round tie between Cilic and DelPo would be a very interesting match but there's a way to go yet.

TSJ, if we agreed on something you and I could be as one, but if we got 20 posters together and we agreed in groups of 2, but disagreed with the other 18, then those 20 could be as ten. Whew, that was hard work!

I am sure Jamie Baker will be kicking himself right now. Okay he went down in straight sets to Lukasz Rosol but it could have been so different. He served for the first set but ended up losing it on a tie-break and was a break up in the second set and blew it. So frustrating.

Re: Australian Open 2013 Match Thread
Cilic vs. Del Po would be interesting, I see Cilic has the better player on skills as well as movement count but Del Po the better player equipped to handle a tough situation.
Del Po would win in 3 or 4 sets max, anything outside that would be a big upset in my view.
Btw I am delighted Rosol won, coz he has the potential meeting with Kols [his slayer in Wim 2012] and a potential 4th round meeting with another no.2 seed, this time against Federer. I wish he marches upto that stage and post a big match performance again.

I'm sure that would be a highly anticipated encounter for lots of reasons. When Federer beats him 6-3 6-2 6-0 that would prove... Well what exactly would it prove? Ha ha! Not a lot really.
