Ref's and interpretations Empty Ref's and interpretations

Post by Knackeredknees Sun 03 Feb 2013, 4:30 pm

Just an observation over the weekends games on how each ref has interpreted the breakdown.

Both Rolland and Owens have been pretty hot on staying on feet, through the gate and player/ball release.

But polite on the other hand let it become a free for all with players coming in from all angles and off their feet with players holding on for as long as possible, leading to much slower ball.

Now how will this effect teams who, say wales next week continue as they were allowed yesterday come up against one of the other refs who would ping them every time!

How can teams expect to know how to plan the game if the refs are so inconsistent?

The refs in each league seem to look for different things. Part of the issue is that in each incident there are multiple things to penalise. I am pretty sure that Owens (who I felt was inconsistent with himself) said at one breakdown - "there are so many things I can penalise here that I can't be bothered. France/Italy going forward, scrum ball"

Oh and some of the decisions on what is coming from the side are exceedingly pedantic - and in some cases wrong.

The 'flat' or 'momentum' pass is an interesting one. England cut Scotland to shreds with it.

If the interpretation on that stays consistent then they are going to be virtually impossible to defend against.

There should be no need for interpretation. There are far too many laws.

According to the Laws of the game the "flat or momentum pass" eg. the scoring passes which created trys on Saturday for Zebo, Twelvetrees and Parling are forward passes and should result in a scrum! If this is to be allowed then rugby will become gridiron and the outside half a quarter back. Refs make mistakes and frequently miss forward passes, but three trys in two international games means this is becoming a concern.

Eh no. There is no mention or forward passes or momentum passes in the laws.

It comes down to throw forwards. Did the player throw it forward? No = Play On.

The "momentum pass" is a throw backwards where speed/wind makes the ball travel forward despite thrown backwards.

Throw backwards = Play On

International referees might miss things but this is an area that fans assume is being interpreted differently.

This is not an area of concern.

Nothing wrong with those tries. Check the replays of a decent angle.

I was just checking the replays when the missus wandered in and asked why the Superbowl had started early.
