Re: Boxing at the movies: Kings of the Ring
Cheers for this will set the sky plus. Not really relevant but off the top of my head my top five boxing films in no particular order are.
Raging Bull
Somebody Up there likes Me
The Harder they Fall
The Great White Hope
On the Waterfront (tenuous but still a top film)
As an aside there is going to be a film made about Billy Miske with Sam Rockwell in it based on Clay Moyle’s biography of Miske. Thought I’d mention it as Clay is an occasional user of 606.

Re: Boxing at the movies: Kings of the Ring
2 Stanley Kubrick films to recommend but I am sure you guys have seen them,
1) Day of the fight - 1950 Documentary of Irish middleweight Walter Cartier. Nat Fleischer is also in it. Very interesting doc with a brief intro of boxing history at the beginning.
2) Killer's kiss - Film noir by Kubrick.

You missed Rocky V, Jeff.
Has anyone seen Resurrecting The Champ?
Got the DVD for Christmas but haven't got round to watching it yet.

The best boxing film I've seen is the documentary 'When we were Kings' which follows the build up and aftermath of the 'Rumble in the Jungle' between Ali and Foreman. A must see for all boxing (and non boxing) fans.

I've heard that there is a Duran, film being made. Usher is playing srl. Can't remember who's lined up for Duran, or the director. One for google.

I hate Boxing movies........
1. The fighting is awful in them.......
2. The actors never "get" their subject....
3. They are always historically inaccurate.
4. They are too mushy....
If you're a rolled like a drunk fan...I suggest you avoid his movie..

Gael García Bernal (me neither) is to play Duran, director is Jonathon Jakubowicz (me neither).
The grimacing parody of his former self Robert De Niro is to play Ray Arcel.

To be fair, if even a die hard Duran fan like me can manage to sit through Hearns thrashing him to within an inch of his life, then sitting through this should be a piece of cake.

Gael Garcia Bernal was in a film called the King co starring William Hurt. Slow but engrossing would be my review.

Diggstown with James Woods. Enjoyed it when I saw it by accident 15 years ago, but doubt I'd feel the same way now. It's like the Sting for boxing!!

Am sure it was called Midnight Sting originally. Good film but been a while sine I watched it. Watched the Fighter again yesterday, its a good film about family but not necessarily a great boxing film - the bits about boxing are the weakest parts of the film.

In regards to the Duran film, you forgot that Usher (RnB star to the older folks on here) is playing SRL

You're right about the name of the film. I believe the name was changed for the UK market in much the same way as the Street Fighter was changed from Hard Times. Charles Bronson at his best.

Great point, I remember in The Fighter, Shane Neary was scottish. Strange considering he's from Everton.

The weight difference between Ward and Mungin was massively exaggerated as well.

Although nowhere near as exaggerated as Christian Bales portrayal of Dickie Eklund.

I've not seen the film itself, but from the odd clip & peoples opinions who have I believe this is the case after watching the HBO documentary 'High On Crack Street' which it was taken from/based on, Dickie comes across as a fairly quiet guy, although there's not masses of footage of him & lets remember he was a crackhead commiting robberies & getting into some fights, seemed an ok guy though.

Re: Boxing at the movies: Kings of the Ring
Best boxing movie ever...Let's Do It again. Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier play two conmen trying to fix a World title fight with predictably "hilarious" consequences.
Time and alcohol may have dimmed/massively over-exaggerated how funny it actually is but it's definitely a change from the serious high brow biopic most boxing movies tend to be.
Failing that...Orlando Bloom in "The Calcium Kid" Never seen it but it surfaced round about the time women were creaming (Calcium...milk...cream...geddit? Nevermind!) themselves over Legolas in Lord of the Rings...apparantly, this stinker should have stayed buried.
