Looking forward to this clash tomorrow. Sadly I'll be working but great to see some lads getting back from injury - Luke O'Dea, Niall Ronan, Sean Dougall and Paul O'Connell. Also a good chance for new combinations to get a chance so should be good to see.

Re: Munster A v Leinster A
No sign of a Leinster team yet but you could see the likes of Quinn Roux and Kevin McLaughlin up against Big Paulie and Stander.

Like the look of that Leinster side.
16 is a lad who converted from LH this season to hooker.
24 is another hooker. Reputed to be strong as an ox for his age.
Dundon is the oldest player on the park. Auva'a is the only other starting player over about 23.

Have Munster got injuries to props or is Horan just they only bench option at this level?

Re: Munster A v Leinster A
Mick,
We dont have that many looseheads. Dave Kilcoyne, Wian du Preez and Marcus Horan are our senior looseheads. James Cronin is in the academy.
We have used tighthead props Alan Cotter and John Ryan at loosehead at times. Darragh Hurley who retired last year aged 26 after seasons of constant injury could have actually been a good player.

Re: Munster A v Leinster A
At tighthead we have far more options.
BJ Botha is the starter. Stephen Archer is developing nicely enough as his understudy. We also have John Ryan and Alan Cotter. We arranged with London Irish and Bath to send these guys on loan to England for a few months earlier this year.
As a backup there is Christy Condon, an experienced All Ireland League prop who is a good scrummager but at age 31 is a late bloomer who will earn a wage as squad cover.

Next year. But they may feck him under the bus in an attempt to keep Botha.Mickado wrote:Ah right, fair enough. When is Du Preez's contract up?

Can't see past a Munster win. But should be great experience for our young lads to play against the great. POC.

No you're thinking of Barry O'Mahony. Thats his brother. Ronan O'Mahony is a back three player.
Re: Munster A v Leinster A
Is Barry injured? Haven't seen him since the start of the season.

Not that I know of. Just finding it hard to get a chance. He is playing a lot for Munster A but the competition for backrow is fierce.
- Dave O'Callaghan
- Sean Dougall
- CJ Stander
- Niall Ronan
- Peter O'Mahony
- Tommy O'Donnell
- James Coughlan
I think I'm right in saying all of them have got Heineken Cup matches under their belt.

Ah good... thats a relief. Maybe Penney is getting through down there!

Besides the injury he hasn't really had a break since he was playing SuperRugby and Currie Cup all year. I think the management are trying to make sure he doesn't get burned out and are restricting his game time.
Absolutely delighted to see POC back, really hope he manages to make it through the game without picking up another injury.

A combination of his injury, testing out other combinations and making sure he gets a break ahead of the big games later in the year.
Re: Munster A v Leinster A
Munster win 24-17
Munster tries from winger O'Mahony and centre Barnes, three penalties and a conversion from Hanrahan, and a drop goal from Deasy.
Leinster tries from Conway and Marsh, two conversion and a penalty from Reid.

Played the first 40 minutes. Taken off then.

Cheers. Hope he makes a full recovery and makes a push for Lions selection/captaincy. Be good to see him firing for Munster at the business end of the Heino as well.

Re: Munster A v Leinster A
I dont think he should be anywhere near the Lions personally.
Reckon that it wouldn't be a good move. No player is entitled to play - lots of other options.
I actually think we'd nearly see the best of O'Connell if he didnt have one eye on the tour.

1 try and 2 conversions is a handy trick for a start.

If he's fully fit and firing at the end of the season I'd say he's a cert to go for what would surely be his last tour. Don't think anyone would begrudge him that. The speed of his return is a bit of a worry though and I think you're right to be concerned if he is pushing himself too far too soon as always.

You're a bit dismissive of his previous experience of tours - especially important on this one as there will be a lot of first time tourists. I reckon he is worth the ticket to the Lions for that alone (and of course his leadership).
Your other point about him having an eye on the tour just doesn't make sense.
Lots of photos of Gatland chatting with Alan Quinlan at Ireland training today! Looks like Quinlan is an embedded media person now for the IRFU!

I think POC will have a very tough time getting to the Lions tour. He has shown too many times that he returns from an injury and then gets another shortly after.
I'd be with Stag on this one it would be best for him to maybe just focus on getting fit and then up to form. If he doesn't get selected to go on the Lions I am not sure he should go to North America with Ireland either.

He has just had the best part of 12 months free rugby - does he seriously need more rest? I can't see him staying at home for the tour to the US (which will hardly be streneous) if he doesn't make the Lions.
He had an op to rectify his reoccurring back injury (same op as Rob Kearney had).
Munster coach Rob Penney was delighted with how O’Connell’s comeback had gone. Penney didn’t rule out the possibility of O’Connell featuring for Young Munster in their home AIL match with Cork Con this Saturday.
“I’m really pleased for him that he got through 40 minutes and looked vigorous,” Penney said.
“I was watching him closely around the contact area, the areas you need to be robust and he could have been potentially compromised but he didn’t look like he was flinching at any time. He looks like he is on the mend and he is on track for a little bit more footie in the next week or so.
“We will see how he backs up. The next 48 hours will be a big indicator of his ability to play in the next few weeks.
“The next 48 hours will determine if he plays for his club this weekend. If it is the right thing for Paul, then it’s the right thing. I love the guys playing their club rugby when they can.”
Interview here with him after the match yesterday. Seems to be very happy with his time on the pitch.
