Not quite good enough to finish off, Unadkat gave away only a single of the 4th ball, and then he got Morne to end the contest, Umesh Yadav smashing the last ball for 4, meaning RCB win by only 4 runs. Virat Kohli would be a relieved man, his bowlers almost choked there in the end!.

a thriller and as the ITV4 commentary team aptly pointed out..RCB gamnes are thriller even when they put 200 on the board...because of the fraility of their bowling.

Kohli the captain has a lot of raw energy.......that he needs to chanelize towards being more strategic

PW managed yet another loss, this time against MI, and in the 2nd game, SH registered a 30 run win over KXIP. With this, KXIP's whatever remaining chances for playoff have suffered big, and SH stay firmly in contention. Parthiv Patel (61), with contributions from the lower order, Thisara Perera and Karan Sharma helped SH post a decent total of 150 after a top order collapse triggered by India U-19 star Sandeep Sharma who picked up 3 wickets, and SH's quality bowling lineup took care of the KXIP batting to bag a 30 run win thereafter.

He does indeed, KPF.
Umesh Yadav apart, India are unlikely to produce out and out pace bowlers in recent times, so I think they should invest on young Sandeep, there should be a good support system that would enable him to bowl at a decent clip without losing his swing. Had a pretty decent first class season as well, and was a real performer in the U-19 world cup.

KKR v RCB and RR v CSK are the games today. KKR won the toss and put RCB in, and the powerpacked RCB top order has struggled so far. Only 84 has come of 15 overs so far, Only Virat Kohli managed to score at a strike rate above hundred, and that too for not much Gayle batted for 36 balls to score 33, Pujara struggled to get the ball away, and even AB hasn't really got going, and the attempted fancy strokes aren't really coming off. Very crucial game for RCB, but KKR has nothing to lose.

Now AB goes, massive blow for RCB, he was the one man who could still have provided RCB with a decent total, He smashed Balaji for a 6, and then attempted a reverse sweep that for a change, didn't come foff today. Nothing so far, has gone the RCB way, and they are struggling at the business end of the tournament.

RR beat CSK by 5 wickets to go 2nd on the points table. THe CSK openers Murali Vijay and Mike Hussey had given them a platform, all be it not all that quickly. But then they lost a few quick wickets, and although Dwayne Bravo played some big hits towards the end, they managed only 141.
But the CSK bowlers reduced RR to 18-3 in the 5th over, and when RR struggled to get the score moving up to the half-way stage, it seemed 141 was enough. But then came an astounding partnership, between Shane Watson and Stuart Binny, Ravichandran Ashwin went for 23 in an over, Bravo for 22, and RR ended up administering a thrashing on CSK. Watson scored 70 of 34, and Binny remained not out on 41 of 23.

A brutal 66 not out of 27 balls with 8 6s from Kieron Pollard enabled MI to chase down a stiff target of 178. Handy contributions from Sachin Tendulkar and Dinesh Karthik, and Rohit Sharma too was there at the end, helping things with a couple of big hits.
The SH total was built around Shikhar Dhawan's 59 with able support from White and Vihari. Dale Steyn bowled very well, but the others, particularly Perera and Amit Mishra, let him and the side down.
But it was a seriously good power hitting spree from Pollard, with Sachin retired hurt, and Smith, Karthik and Rayudu back in the hut, SH looked in control till the 16th over, but Pollard then ambushed and destroyed their bowling. MI, RR and CSK are almost through, the contest for the remaining playoff position remains close between SH and RCB.

Pollard demonstrated the attraction of T20 cricket, he was hopeless to the point of embarrassing against Steyn (like he often is against quality bowling) but against the lesser bowling he can make Gayle look like Boycott. Brilliant entertainment.

Pollard today showed why 50 over ODIs will wiped out soon.....
already those 50 over games.....with dead 30 overs in the midst of the inning...... are seeming like curved screen monitor type desktops compared to the T20s that represent I.Pad generation.

and T20s revolve all around the 100s of IPL games every year with an odd T20 world cup with a couple dozen games coming every other year.

BCCI doesn't maker the IPL successful...the paying customers do.

IPL is eating up the paying customer segment from ODIs.

But ODIs bring in more ad opportunities and more money. And the response for the India-England ODIs, particularly when organized in emerging cities, was pretty good. India do have plenty of such emerging cities, all combined, the ODIs are going to be well off at least in the near future.

maybe you are right....the cricket market in India hasn't yet saturated...it can take all ODIs...and all IPL games also.

at some point when saturation hits.......ODIs should be the form to crumble first.
we already see Champions Trophy has been scrapped.

there are far fewer triangular and quadrangualr tournaments then there were between 1990 and 2010

KXIP won the toss and have put RCB in. The big team news is that Zaheer Khan is back from injury, and is playing the season's first game for RCB. Muralitharan is also back in. Murali Kartik, who bowled well in the last game against KKR is out, so is saurab Tiwary. Wicketkeeper Arun Karthik is back, and KL Rahul is also getting a game. No Praveen Kumar for KXIP.

RCB ones again not making much of the powerplay. Only 31 of the 6 overs, and they've lost Pujara for a 20 ball 19. Gayle's still there, hasn't had much of strike, and has not going from whatever strike he has had. Just 4 of 10.

"The IPL"...Edition_6 - Page 13 Empty Re: "The IPL"...Edition_6

Post by Mike Selig Tue 14 May 2013, 12:02 pm

Have to say I've lost a bit of interest in the IPL over the last week or so. The cricket has remained perfectly good, but seeing the same teams play each other over and over, when it has been clear for a while who the top 5 sides are... The format does drag on. However the fans seem happy enough, so I don't think it will be changing any time soon.

Another gripe of mine is the commentary: it is awful. Danny Morrison has got to be the most annoying cricket commentator I've ever listened to, but the rest aren't much better. There is an obsession with remaining old-fashioned (the talk is all about "proper cricket shots" whatever that means, and of course the yorker is the solution to everybody's problems at the death) whereas surely the great achievement of T20 cricket is making the innovations mainstream and at least as effective as traditional play.

Returning to the yorker, this tournament has once again showed that the yorker cannot anymore be the default ball at the death. With a couple of exceptions (Cooper at the start of the tournament most notably) bowlers who have stuck to the yorker have gone around the park: the reason is simple, if the batsman knows you are going to bowl a yorker then he can set himself, and if you miss your length by a couple of feet then you got out of the park. Moreover with the sweeps they play nowadays you can even hit a good yorker for 4 or 6. There is still a place for the yorker, but it cannot be the stock ball anymore.

After repairing most of the damage from a slowish start, Chris Gayle goes for 77. It came of 53 balls, and RCB, in the 19th over, are 159-2.

SO KXIP has 175 as the target. Kohli and Gayle stayed there long and exploded in the end to provide their side with a good score, despite a rather slow first half of their innings. Not beyond KXIP if the likes of Miller and Marsh find form, and if Gilly could produce one of those good old days, but RCB has Zaheer and Muralitharan in their lineup and has more experience in that bowling lineup than what they had during the Miller game.

Zaheer did pick up an early wicket of Marsh and has gone at only 6 an over, but RCB's bowling problems remain more or less the same despite the changes. KXIP very much in control at the moment. Gilchrist and Mahmood building up a nice partnership, and they have reached 90-1 after 11 overs. With wickets in hand, 85 of 54 looks quite doable. KXIP's game to lose, particularly considering RCB's bowling up. They need to score 20 runs more than the par score to give themselves a chance.

Very comfortable in the end for KXI.

RCB's bowlers inability to defend totals has really been a constant: poor plans and executions. I remain baffled that Gayle doesn't bowl (a lot) more.

Gilchrist struggled at times, but hit enough off or near the middle to play the match-winning innings. One thing he did was play sensibly, looked for the big shots at the right times.

Murali looked very poor. Struggled to get his fingers revving the ball as he used to (although his flight was nice at times), and really sluggish in the field - his "drop" off Gilchrist early on turned out to be crucial.

KXIP doing it with ease. The old horse Adam Gilchrist turning the clock back with an innings of 85 not out, and a significant contribution from Azhar Mahmood, who provided life to the chase when Gilchrist was struggling to middle and time the ball. They chased the stiff total down with 11 balls remaining.
RCB's chances take a significant hit with this loss. KXIP, who had a technical chance to qualify for the playoffs, live on to fight for another day.

CSK are batting against DD. CSK are without Chris Morris today, Albie Morkel returns.

CSK defeated DD by 33 runs to strengthen their chances of a top 2 finish in the group stage. MS Dhoni's halfcentury, with contributions from Vijay, Hussey and Jadeja took CSK to 168, and DD never looked like chasing it down. They eventually ended up with 135-9.

PW finish with 170-4. 66 from Manish Pandey, 48 from Finch. Handy contributions from Yuvraj and Uthappa.

It was a rare "Obstructing the Field" that Yususf pathan was given out.

That sealed KKR's fate......while cleraly Yusuf was in desperartion guilty of obstructing the fielder by deliberatley kicking the ball...I felt the batsman at the otehr end....some Das......was too selfish.....and soon after this Das guy ran out Bhatia also selfishly wanting to keep the strike.

Pathan was playing very well after 3 mediocre years....but in vain

A 7 run win for PW that ended whatever technical chances that KKR had. The match was more noticed for the Yusuf Pathan issue that KPF mentioned. Yusuf, who played well for his 72, had brought his side close, but in an act of desperation he kicked the ball away when the bowler was closing in on the ball to effect a run out.
In the other match of today, MI defeated RR by 14 runs. A quick 58 from Aditya Tare who replaced the injured Sachin Tendulkar at the top, helped on by handy contributions from Glenn Maxwell, Dinesh Karthik and Harbhajan Singh helped MI post 166. RR had a top order collapse but Stuart Binny and Brad Hodge brought them back into the game with a good partnership. At one point RR needed a quite doable 45 of 24, but Lasit Malinga, Mitchell Johnson and Dawal Kulkarni kept them pretty quiet and MI were through.
Both sides are already through to the playoffs, but now RR's hopes of a top 2 finish has taken a hit. They still have a game left, if they win that well, and if CSK and MI don't win their last games, then they are still in with a chance to finish in the top 2.

Three players from Rajasthan Royals, Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan are taken in by the police. Another sad day for the game of cricket.

If found guilty, ban them for life and fine them a heap of cash. Zero tolerance is the only way.

Not just the IPL, fixing continues to trouble the game at all levels and no country has a clean slate. Very sad situation. Haven't really followed the IPL game today. Lost interest after the revelations in the morning.

sunrisers struggling today..

i know the sunrisers have done well this season however the constant chopping and changing of Sanga and White couldnt have helped...Sammy is a t2o world cup winning captain, he could have had a go, which then would have meant we could have got Nathan McCullum into the side.
