Land of the Golden Gloves

by Steve Bateson
The fans that were packed inside the Venetian Resort in Macau, China had come to witness one event in particular, the debut of their amateur hero Zou Shiming, but they left having experienced a tremendous night of boxing action.
Zou, a three time world champion and three time Olympic medallist (two gold), had decided to reap the massive rewards that the professional game has to offer and after the performance he gave on Saturday night it is easy to see why this man is highly touted to challenge, if not win, a world championship within the next twelve months.
The Freddie Roach trained fighter showed his skills from the off against the game but limited Eleazar Valenzuela. He danced around the ring, evading his opponent’s attacks whilst crunching home with an exceptional variety of combinations. Shiming’s hands and reflexes are grease lightning, his future certainly has an air of excitement around it.
Valenzuela was tough and he refused to budge despite the relentless arsenal that was on show from the Macau hero. He even found some decent offense of his own, showing that Shiming’s progress should be carefully guided; too much too soon could be disastrous for him. But the four round exhibition was more akin to a sparring session as it moved forward, Zou teeing off whenever he liked and very rarely did he miss his target. The result was never in doubt, every round was given to Shiming on the scorecards, and he finished off his debut with a comfortable 40-36 victory. Valenzuela is still young, eighteen, and there is plenty of time for him to learn but he was no match for his decorated opponent on this night. It will be interesting to see where Zou goes next, the Flyweight division is full of talented fighters who will not duck the chance of facing him.
Take Juan Francisco Estrada for example, his split-decision victory over Brian Viloria, to become the new WBA and WBO Flyweight Champion, will give him the confidence to face anyone and everyone in the 112lbs division.
Viloria, coming off the back of his destructive victory over Hernan Marquez, was probably considered the favourite in this bout but from the outset it never looked like Estrada was fazed by his opposition. Estrada packed a heavy KO percentage (17 early from 22) but at only twenty two years of age this fight represented a huge step up in class for the Mexican, but one he was more than ready for.
Estrada got into his opponent in the first round, shooting hard hooks to the body and then moving upstairs with big uppercuts that were just missing the champion’s head by inches. Viloria continued to march forward though and his fast left, right combinations found their mark as the round drew to a close, marking the eye of Estrada. The crowd’s interest has been peaked. Zou is a demonstration of the worst side of boxing. Actually that's not fair. I'll rephrase, bib arum is the embodiment of all that is wrong with boxing. He sees the Chinese market, he sees zou the past it amateur icon of the communist/capitalist state and he sees dollar signs. And so he has no problem getting back down on his 80 year old knees and milking for all he's worth.

Bob draws 300 million viewers and its a bad thing, Jesus Christ drawing 1 million viewers on HBO is considered a success over in the states
Yea he's trying to make money, that's his job why shouldn't he. As far as I'm aware the card was a real success and while the headline was perhaps a gimmick the rest was real good matchmaking and exposure unlikely no other

Nothing, as I mentioned above
China is the new big superpower in the world in multiple things and if there's a niche in the market for boxing there than hell we might as well exploit it

Shocked Bob could get them to work with him. They know little of boxing, these Chinamen.

Not saying you, the first comment was pretty derogatory to the whole thing.

From what I've seen in other sports they become very knowledgeable very quickly, these Chinamen. F1 for example.
