Glasgow Warriors v Ospreys, Scotstoun, Friday 19 April, 19:35 hrs
First topic message reminder :
Oh well after the disaster on Friday in Llanelli we need a huge performance from The Warriors against a tough team. Do Jackson and Pyrgos carry the can for Friday or does Toonie stick to his guns - how is that for a mixed metaphor ?
My team :-
Hogg
Maitland
DTH
Matawalu
Weir
Horne
Dunbar
Grant
MacArthur
Welsh
Swinson
Kellock
Strauss
Barclay
Wilson
Bench: Low, Hall, Harley, Slamont, Pyrgos, Reid, Ryder, Jackson

lets see..... lol. Inability to handle Glasgows Bltiz defence and a poor backs display despite KF's quick ball. Missed tackles, and crucial attacking lineouts turned over. I know Baldwins the second choice hooker but why does he loft the ball so high? Then the scrum debacle. Glas were well worth the win win tho. We miss our full strength back line soooo much.

It was Munster, second 40, all over again.
No criticisms of anyone they all did their part.
Hope Wee Dunkie is alright, though it looks pretty bad.
Hope 21st, Mrs Schiz and all the other posters are in the scout hut gein it laldy.
Nighty night,
p.s. C'mon you Zebre
Jimbo,
just recovering from a right old party in the 'Scout Hut' - there was a queue to get in (apparently capacity is 480)! Gave my best wishes from you to UiG (Clyde). Toonie, G-Dog and Nicoooooo all partying too - well circulating anyway.
Awesome performance esp Barcs, Morrison and Strauss who smashed everything in their path. As some of our MFL pals are saying WTF the SRU are paying some of the duds they have over East (its a very long list) when they could give Barcs and G-Dog a contract is beyond me.
BTW sat next to a party of Dutch people in the North Stand - all rugby players from Holland, one of whom starts at Glasgow Uni in August. All of them about 7 ft tall - even the women ! Honorary members of the North Stand Massif who jumped about and gave it laldy with the rest of us .
PS take it all back about Alain Rolland - he had a very good game indeed.

I see both SirBiggles and Breadvan have taken Umbrage at 21st Schiz's considered and philosophic outpourings. You really need to look at the time of his posts Almost two o'clock in the feckin' morning and he'd been to bid a fond farewell to G-Dog and Barcs. Perhaps he was slightly tired and emotional? Also, he is not ignorant he's Schizoid, man. If he gives one of your better players a nickname you don't like, don't respond like an outraged dowager duchess IT'LL ONLY ENCOURAGE HIM.
I know the Horsepoohs were totally outclassed but you need to keep a sense of perspective.

PPS Toonie when interviewed in the club said we should prepare for Dublin for the semi final with an exhortation for a sizeable travelling support ala 1872 visit to The Library !

I really hope Hibbard is ok, He must be a shoe-in for the Lions. As soon as he left the field the O's scrum weakened considerably .
Tuperic looked dangerous every time he had the ball and stood out in an otherwise poor Ospresy's performance. However I still think the 2 best players on the park last night belonged to Glasgow and that was Barclay and Grant
Does anyone know how bad the injury is for Weir, looks pretty bad.

Another thing - Peter Horne was bloody electric at FH when Wee Dunky went off. If he works on his kicking (1 from 3 last night - albeit Dunky was 2 from 5 ) he could be a future international 10. His cross kick to DTH was tremendous stuff. He does thrive on broken play right enough but a very clever and elusive rugby player. Nico at 9 and Horne at 10 - bloody hell fire - how do you defend that ?
Yet another Fifer (Ryan Grant also) who slipped under the MFL radar !

Breadvan - apologies for last nights slight on Tipuric. I could have said worse but as Jimbo said was a wee bit shoite- faced after a good night partying at Scotstoun with me new Dutch pals. My point is he was totally overshadowed by Barclay - who cannot get a contract big enough to stay (because of all the keech they have through in Edinburgh apparently). To answer your question. No. The Library is Murrayfield (shhhhhh!!!!! ) and we always take a very sizeable/boisterous raiding party through for the 1872 Cup victory parade on an annual basis.
Anyway, crise de foie, so suitably caffeined and ibuprofened up am beginning to make sense of my immediate environment and shall now endeavour to ingest some solid sustenance

Thanks pal - and you could do us a massive if you turn over Leinster at the RDS in a fortnight - you are, after all, particularly good at that

Watching it again, enjoyed it so much. Weirs injury was his ankle, could see it second time of watching. Will be interesting who they go with in his absence. Horne did very well when he came on but his goalkicking is unreliable, is Jackson too much of a liability?

Good posting Ospreys fans - respect. I am absolutely serious in that I expect you to beat Leinster in 2 weeks.
Nothing about Weir on the official networks this morning. What happened to Hibbard? That's bad - we need him in Australia.
Huge amount of respect to Josh Strauss too who apparently suffered a family bereavement this week but wanted to play last night anyway.

Next game I think they have to go for broke, whether they play at Ravenhill or the RDS makes very little difference to their chances, they need a bonus point win for confidence and so that they have any chance of a home semi-final. As a result I'd go for:
1. Grant
2. MacArthur
3. Welsh
4. Swinson
5. kellock
6. Strauss
7. Barclay
8. Wilson
9. Matawalu
10. Horne
11. Van Der Merwe
12. Dunbar
13. Bennett
14. Maitland
15. Hogg
16. Reid
17. Hall
18. Low
19. Ryder
20. Harley
21. Pyrgos
22. Jackson
23. Lamont
Maybe a wee bit harsh on Harley, Morrison and Lamont but I think next week is all about attack and from 6 to fifteen that team has players who can break the line and score tries. I think a team with that much power will be far too good for Connacht, then we need Ospreys to do us a favour or Zebre to produce a miracle, but they will hopefully be fired up for a home game against the European champions who may be resting players before the Amlin.

George,
Meatloaf has been tweeting that he was kept in hospital overnight and expects to get out today. He was still in the dressing room at the finish high -fiving his team-mates. The wee man even applauded the crowd as he was stretchered off. Cracking wee guy.

Shoite, I can't even hope for a little injury (not that I would wish an injury on anyone) because they're both needed for the Lions, well Zebre have Venditti and Halangahu so they're pretty much even.

Unfortunately Zebre are going to be without Garcia their key man in middle field and their 8 Van Schalkwyk who is arguably their player of the season. Bergamasco makes his return but will probably cost Zebre a yellow card
Best we can hope is Zebre not allowing Leinster a bonus point imo.

Still to be properly scanned etc. But initial thoughts are that its not career threatening but Coaches are not expecting to see him for the start of next season.
With Wight going, be interesting to see if this injury changes the coaches approach to his replacement. Do they still keep with the plan of going for a youngster to develop. Or sign an experienced 10 on a one year deal.

Great result and a very good performance.
Crowd of 6500+ is very encouraging. First time we have had a crowd like that outside of an Edinburgh game in a LONG time. I know we have had similar numbers, against the Irish teams at times in years gone by. But the crowd is usually boosted by a huge contingent from the visitors. Last night almost the entire crowd were there to support Glasgow.

Barclay not staying is nothing to do with Edinburgh and how they have spent their cash. Both teams have budgets and unfortunately we have almost 10% of ours tied up in Cusiter & R Lamont who we rarely see playing for us.

Surely it can't be that much, considering Strauss, Maitland, Barclay and Kellock must be on something similar, anyway can't we drop Lamont, he doesn't play and I thought the SRU had a system whereby they could terminate a contract if a player was injured for six months. It's not like they need him whereas leaving themselves with one 7 is risky.

Maitland this season is not counting towards the Glasgow budget, he is an "exception" If Ford does not re-sign with Edinburgh, Cusiter will be by far the highest earner on the SRU's books (200k+). Lamont is also getting a top level wage, although not in the same league as Cus. I don't know the exact wages or the exact budgets, but both of them are taking a huge % of the budget and my rough maths makes it not far off 10% (Maitland excluded).
Glasgow are having to absorb Maitlands wage next season (correctly) so in budget terms he is a new signing for next year. So R Lamont not being there next year, basically offsets Maitland's addition.
As for Cus and R Lamont, I am not having a go at them or their wages. Its not their fault they are injured and on good money, just saying there is a lot of "dead" money in the squad.

So all the dead wood keech at Edinburgh(30-40 of them) who contribute exactly nothing to Scottish rugby do not count against our wage bill ?! I am confused.

P.S. Schiz how's the head this morn?
Anyhoo, He was Ivan on the old 606. A right misery...
Btw, does the 1872 visit to the Library refer to the 30 or so blokes in kilts back in the 2010 play off semi?

What about the money gained from not having to pay for Angus MacDonald any more?

If you can't work out that there are two independent budgets for the two pro teams then I don't think I can help you at this point.

Interestingly, if Glasgow score four tries against Connacht (not outside the realms of possibility) we'll have scored twice as many regular season tries as we did last year.

Quite a ringing endorsement for Toonie that statistic, albeit he benefitted from some superb signings.
Shame about r lamont and cusiter. With hogg and matawalu in the sqaud, I can't see glasgow ever getting value for money from those two.

Hello all, first post. Warriors fan, bandwagon jumper, some might say. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the game on Friday night. I remember going along to Hughenden to watch, cant help thinking how much Scotstoun has added and how far the club has come. They have to find money to keep Barclay.
Just wanted to add respect to Dan Biggar - nice touch congratulating Toonie at the end, and running over to Weir as he was being carried off.

Schiz - whilst the SRU funds both clubs in aggregate, the amount available for each club is ring-fenced for their use only.Dorothy_Mantooth wrote:21st Century Schizoid Man wrote:So all the dead wood keech at Edinburgh(30-40 of them) who contribute exactly nothing to Scottish rugby do not count against our wage bill ?! Incidentally, who is the controlling mind in terms of how Edinburgh spend their recruitment beans if the club doesn't have a coach?

Welcome furra, make yourself at home just don't sit in the ottoman by the window that's Asbo's. Oh, the empty botles are Ian Bru's.
So many good things about Friday's game;
First
60 points on the Dragons- ah but they're the weakest Welsh side
50 points on Munster- ah but the week before a HK match
5 tries on the reigning champions who were going for a play off spot!!!
Next
Ryan Grant -two tries
Also
Hornee looking very good at FH
And, obviously,
Niko being Niko
And
Morrison-Dunbar looking a very good pairing (may not see it again but it worked on the night)
Couldn't believe it,
SLamont had a barnstormer of an evening
But the highlight of the evening was Allain Rolland who gave about a dozen "final warnings" to the front rows in the first 40, and did nothing but at the first scrum in the second half said , "That's it get off, both of you". When Jones and Low returned he told them next time was a red card. The result was that we got to watch some contested scrums which, miraculously, failed to collapse after every put in. Clear evidence,IMHO, that ALL pro front rows cheat at every scrum but adhere to the AB's dictum that it's only cheating if the ref penalises you for it. And since the ref's have been tolerating it for so long then it can't be cheating. ( I shall declare an interest here; I'm still cheesed off at having shelled out a lot of money to take no.1 son up to Edinburgh to see Scotland v Wales only to watch every scrum result in a penalty/free kick because Adam Jones and co. didn't fancy taking on our front five) Let's see more referees have the cojones to actually enforce the laws of the game at scrum time!!!
Bring on Connacht

Welcome furra, I have fond memories of seeing the Warriors too at Hughenden were I had a season ticket before I left Glasgow. I look forward to seeing them at Scotstoun though it may not be the semi as planned. Is there a real buzz amongst the crowd at the moment. What is the atmosphere like at Scotstoun compared to Firhill?
Agree about the front row, at first questioned the double yellow but actually sorted it out pretty well and got grant and jones to stop playing games. Having said that I don't begrudge grant giving as good as he got from jones who is clearly a very shrewd operator at scrum time. Easily the worst part of rugby currently and I groan every time a scrum is awarded.
Does anyone have an insight into what Barclay's reason for leaving is. He seemed to make the choice a while back when he wasn't in such great form and seems to be enjoying it a lot more now on the field. May be good for him if a top heiniken cup side wanted him but otherwise not sure what the merits of leaving the warriors at this time are.

Scarlets fans pretty confident they have signed Barclay, what a great signing for them, Easterby being a former back rower must be licking his lips.
Maybe Barclay wanted to see new horizons after 9 years at the club?
Also with Matawalu playing so well, i don't see the point in having Cusiter (even though i like him) and paying him so much, same for Rlamont although i read he is retiring this summer.

Whatever he's going to do, I would guess Rory's not going to be a professional stuntman. Unless he's starring as Samuel L Jackson's character in a remake of 'Unbreakable'.

I dont understand that move at all. Why is he leaving a club on the up like Glasgow to join a club that will be on a steep decline next season.

@Asbo, jimbo, DrT, Cheers!
DrT: I always thought Firhill was a decent venue, especially off the back of the move from Hughenden. At Hughenden back in the day, wearing a club tie, or being in the company of someone who was, was enough to get in for free then. Great craic, proper old school clubhouse, but no way to run a business, Shirley!
Watched the game on TV on Friday, so can't say first hand what the atmosphere was like, but it looked good. The biggest downer at Firhill when I went along was always staring into a completely empty stand opposite the Jackie Husband. That seems to have been sorted with the move to Scotstoun
Sean Lamont looks a much better player on the wing (where he doesn't have to worry about passing to people so much!) Dunno why Barclay is leaving, or why there is this confusion. If he's off to France, I heard he has to keep shtum until May. Christ, my hangover is bad today!

Re: Glasgow Warriors v Ospreys, Scotstoun, Friday 19 April, 19:35 hrs
Welcome furra.
I honestly think that Barclay found a French team (Lyon, if you believe the blogosphere) - hence the announcement he was off but with no mention of the destination, a hallmark of FFR regulations - but the deal then fell through. Glasgow had probably already committed wages to other places and simply may not have been able to keep him even if they wanted to.
He's been associated with a move to Leicester Tigers for years now, but nobody really seems to believe that they're anything other than rumours (although Tigers need an openside).

I would be gutted if Barclay had to settle for a 2nd division French team or a pro 12 team in decline

Good to have you here, Furra!
We all know how good a play Barclay is, and he has really brought his game on since his injury. God, I hope the rumours about Scarlets aren't true - what could he possibly gain from the move? Other than staying at Glasgow, the only acceptable move would be to a Toulon-esque club in France, like Toulon. To quote Mr Spock, "Anything less is a waste of material".
I absolutely love the feeling at Scotstoun - nice facilities, good food and drink selection (massively improved since the start of the season - if they could only have Best on tap in the main stand, I'd be a happy boy), easy access by train (I haven't tried parking there yet). None of this is even comparable, though, to the support of the fans - there's a raw hunger that is palpable, and it really improves the experience. I took my parents and sister to the 1872 match, and they were blown away - for people who would normally only go to Scotland matches at the Library, they were really impressed by the intensity of the atmosphere. It's the same every week and I can't imagine a first-time visitor not wanting to come back next year, particularly when we're winning.
Listen friends, the first step is to admit you have a problem. I, on the other hand, don't have a problem. I could quit any time I want.jimbopip wrote:Oh, the empty botles are Ian Bru's.

Scarlets aren't in decline by any means, they will use North's money to strenghten their squad in different positions like Glasgow did when they lost Gray.

Welcome furra,
always good to see another Warrior on here to balance out the East/West divisions!
I got talking to Colin 'Budgie' Gregor as we queued to get into the club (Mrs Schiz was gossiping with old friends in the North Stand). Colin reckons that with this pool of players The Warriors can and will compete for the Rabo AND Heino for a good few seasons to come. Ergo make Barcs an offer he cannot refuse we need him more than ever.
Another thing from Friday. Where were all the Osprey fans - I counted erm 1. So that was 6399 Warrior fans. There was also a large group (9-10) of Leicester fans who seemed to be having a great time in the bar post match.
Also at last Biffy Clyro as the team ran out - they still play that 'I Belong to Glasgow' shoite but at last Biffs and AC/DC - way heyyyyyy
