Re: surrey vs durham dynamos YB40
Thanks Jimbob
I would expect the only change to be a straight swap of Burns for Smith. Given the bowling performances of Batty and Ansari in the last match I imagine Keedy will be given another run out. Another possibility would be Jewell for Lewis - but I imagine Adams will want to give Lewis another chance.

Cheers for the thread, JimBob. Much appreciated as always.
Like the Corporal, I again think that Linley, Curran and Jewell will miss out.
Is the match on tv? I don't think it is but thought it would be starting at 3.40.

It isn't guildford, I assumed it would be as it's the only one and is a day/night game but nothing on Sky which is disappointing
Burns for Smith, no idea where he'll bat. I think he could do a job opening and being more of a base for the others to play around or he might end up at 5/6 with Roy opening instead.

Cheers, Carrot. Odd that. As the game isn't being televised, would have been far more logical to start around 5.40 and catch the after work guys.
I suspect that Burns will go straight in as Davies' opening partner. That minimises the disruption to the (one day) team and gives Burns further opportunity to concentrate on his opening role. Probably better as well to have Roy's potential fire power a little lower down the order.
Too much work on at the moment to get along today (so I shouldn't be posting here now!!) but hope to catch some of the CC match.

Re: surrey vs durham dynamos YB40
A very mixed innings!
Great to have back in form with a century.
However, 216 all out off 37.3 overs. A below par score by current standards and dreadful to waste two and a half overs.
Great credit though to that wily old fox Collingwood (noticed Shelsey was singing his praises the other day - that should have worked as a jinx! Grrr!!). After 23 overs we were 136-2 and ideally set for a winning total. One over later - Colly's first - we were 137-4 and from then on always up against it. Wickets regularly fell from then on and, apart from Lewis, no one stuck around.
Very difficult now although wonder if the weather might play a part ....

Re: surrey vs durham dynamos YB40
Not just wise after the event but I would have suggested beforehand that the team selection was very odd. Includes, Dernbach, Lewis, Jewell, Batty, Keedy, Ansari, Brain. So that is six players who should be able to get through their overs even without Brain. Or six if you assume Jewell plus Brain = one
Surely it would make sense to have picked another front line top batsman (ie Burns) and we would still have had more than enough choice of bowlers - eg choose between Jewell and Lewis, or have both of those and give Keedy the chop....

Surrey's match abandoned. Was it that wet at the Oval. Or the players didn't fancy playing in a howling gale with occasional unpleasant squalls of rain. Definitely not spectating weather, for sure....

Re: surrey vs durham dynamos YB40
Corporal - totally agree on the starting eleven. Not much point in stacking your team with bowlers if you can't bat out 40 overs and set a decent target to defend.
Think we got lucky getting 1 point from the abandonment. We were certainly looking second best at the end of our innings despite the success of .
Meanwhile, Keedy appears to be mounting an early challenge to Lewis as our worst signing in the last couple of years ....

Guildford - you must be particularly pleased about le Roi We're certainly going to need him to deliver in limited overs and cc this season.

Yes, very pleased. I've never doubted his ability but have been concerned as to what effect a wretched 2012 and being left out of the CC side this season would have on his confidence. Hopefully, can now go on this year in all forms of the game.Corporalhumblebucket wrote:Guildford - you must be particularly pleased about le Roi We're certainly going to need him to deliver in limited overs and cc this season.
As you say, he's certainly needed! If a batsman were to be injured in the nets tomorrow before the start of play (as happened to Harinath a fortnight ago), we have absolutely no other batter to call on whilst Ansari and Sibley are absent on exam duty.

Re: surrey vs durham dynamos YB40
Good job the rain intervened really, thoroughly pleased for Roy to get a hundred, especially in a game where no one else got out of the 20's! Hopefully puts him in good confident mood ahead of the CC game tomorrow. Agree that the team selection was odd but glad Jewell was selected even though he didn't bowl and got 1!
Guildford - agree about Keedy although he hasn't had much of a go yet. I'd quite happily chuck him and Lewis out of the squad right now, we have plenty of bowling cover and would save a load on wages that would help bring a batsman in as cover/competition.

Carrot - agree it's too soon to judge Keedy but don't see a need for him currently at least.Carrotdude wrote:

I've nothing against Lewis and Keedy personally. I'm sure they are decent guys. Indeed, I recall JimBob being highly complimentary about Mrs Lewis when he saw her at the Oval last season. I'm just unconvinced that their signings were necessary. That particularly applies to Lewis who now seems - in CC terms - little more than an expensive reserve blocking the way of Dunn and Edwards to even a first team squad place.
As I've flagged before, the balance of the squad is wrong and, as you suggest, paying high wages to unneeded bowlers doesn't help bringing in much required additional batsmen.

Re: surrey vs durham dynamos YB40
Exactly - tomorrow we will likely have Linley, Lewis, Dunn, Edwards and Jewell all sitting on the sidelines and 3 frontline seamers playing. That is surely too many?
Keedy will really only be necessary on a proper turning pitch or if Batty gets injured but we don't have any other spin cover really (Ansari is more of a 5th bowler/7th batsman type in the CC to me). That said I would rather us have gone for a younger option than Keedy to boost our spinning ranks. Personally I would have seriously enquired about Adil Rashid to see if he wanted to try and revive his career a bit down here - he wouldn't be playing for Yorks if Rafiq hadn't got injured and he offers genuine batting ability. His start to the season means that ship has probably sailed though.

Re: surrey vs durham dynamos YB40
Think we can take that point as our total did look to low.
I was working last night and am onlyabout half a mile from the oval, it rained for a good hour and a half not heavy stuff but that annoying drizzle that would make it horrible to play in.
I think Smiths injury could hurt us in the one day stuff as I really had high hopes for us. Over the last couple of seasons we have been a strong one day team on paper at least I for me Smith is extremely underrated in the shorter form of the game.
With some of our younger players taking to one day cricket quicker than the championship, Roy and Dernbach spring to mind and the fact you can win a one day game without having to bowl a team out I really thought we looked good this season.
I know one player doesnt make a team but I was looking at our team sheet with high hopes of winning a trophy
