Re: surrey vs lancashire lightning YB40
Thanks, JimBob.
I seem to say this more and more often but incredibly difficult to predict who will miss out.
The first six in JimBob's list (from Batty onwards) seem nailed on. With Ansari unavailable, Keedy will probably play to provide Batty with a spin partner. Suspect Tremlett will also get a game - we have to see how he holds up.
After that - who knows? Not what I would do but l'll wildly guess that Burns and Meaker will sit this one out.

I'd sack Adams now, replace him with Billy Smart....at least his clowns would be more entertaining than the ones Adams has assembled........and a darn site younger!

Re: surrey vs lancashire lightning YB40
Defeat somehow snatched from the jaws of victory!
We appeared to be cruising to victory when we were 60-0 off about 8 overs.
I realise that the Brain and Batty couldn't go hell for leather when we were suddenly 5 down but they both seem to have played the role of sheet anchor at the same time for too long. Almosty inevitably they got out in quick succession when trying to up the rate and that left the rest too much to do.
As in the CC match at Notts, our bowlers deserved better reward for their efforts. Pleasing at least for Tremlett to get through his full quota and with a good return.

Another awful display. What is the point in De Bruyn, Keedy and Solanki? Play Jewell, Edwards etc - we 'd probably still lose but we'd be building for the future instead of clogging up the team with has-beens.

Re: surrey vs lancashire lightning YB40
Can somebody please explain to me what has happened in this game??? To come home to another defeat is depressing enough but when I saw the scores I thought it must have been a bad pitch only to read the above threads to see we let them score 40 off the last three overs then race to 60 for 0.... how bad can the pitch have been.
Everytime I see a Surrey scorecard at the moment it brings memories of my school day cricket matches ( For those wondering my school cricket team was useless)
With Fulhams horrendous finish to the season plus the fact I lost my two fantasy football leagues on the last day of the season having pretty much led them both for nine months added to Surreys woeful performances is driving me to

3 defeats in a row. 1 win in 8 this season.
Deafening silence from Adams recently, nothing from him after the defeat to Notts or Lancs.

Re: surrey vs lancashire lightning YB40
I have inside information that the Corporal is on his hols... and staying somewhere without internet/wifi Best place to be probably right now
As Guildfordbat says.. atleast Tremlett seems to have bowled well...
Been busy recently so didn't have time to comment on the Notts defeat... but we're certainly in for a long hard struggle this season... The question is... do we rely on our season pro's to step up to the mark..... or do we try and blood some of the youngsters and encouarage some of the raw young talent...?
For my part, I favour an latter approach.... I would find it easier to accept relegation at the end of the season, if in the process, we've developed some youngsters with a lot of hope and prospect for the future.... I'd find it harder to accept relegation if we've been relying on a number of seasoned pro players nearing the end of their careers... Anyway, these are my basic thoughts for what they are worth...i'd be interested to see what others with vastly more knowledge and expertise of Surrey CCC think!

Re: surrey vs lancashire lightning YB40
Hi Chichester - very good and equally interesting post.
My immediate gut reaction and preference is to bring on the youngsters. However, I'm not sure things are so straightforward. In particular:
* We are serious relegation candidates. However (at the time of posting) we are not relegation certainties. We need to consider whether we are still fighting to avoid the drop or instead looking to just give our young uns some experience when we select the next few CC teams.
* Our youngsters being chucked in together and being on the end of a few hammerings may do them more harm than good.
All in all, a mess and I don't see any obvious answer other than cancelling the Corporal's leave!!
PS -
*We have several reserve young seamers (eg, Dunn and Edwards) but far less such batsmen where the need to replace - in particular, de Bruyn - is greater.

Re: surrey vs lancashire lightning YB40
Hi Guildfordbat,
Did you sign the Corporal's leave card? I certainly didn't
As ever, sound advice from your good self. I suppose its probably a case of mixing youth and experience.... who was it who said..." you can't win the league with kids?"!! I don't see enough Surrey cricket to sensibly come to a judgment as to whether we should be relying on youth as opposed to seasoned experienced players... I guess as in many sports, the line between success and faillure can often be such a fine line... mind you that's often used as an excuse to paper over some yawning chasms too!.. There's probably enough cliches in this post for 1 night As you so rightly say, we are not yet relegation certainties.. plenty of time for things to turn around... and maybe time for some promising young batsman to appear from somewhere?!! - Now, what's the name of that chappie you were talking about a lot last season? Is he ready to step up to the plate now? Really looking forward to my day's cricket at Guilford in a couple of weeks and hopefulls some sunshine and to meeting up with you all... Given Wark's form last week, this could be a tight match?
