Wrestlers Who Portrayed Different Nationalities In Their Gimmicks
Ok so the first one everybody will think of is Yokozuna. He is the Samoan wreslter who played a Japanese sumo wrestler in the WWE. Also I found out the other day, Muhammed Hassan who was portrayed as an arab on TV is actually Italian. And of cousre who can forget the Canadian Rowdy Roddy Piper who wore kilts as a Scottish heel.
So my question is who else has portrayed a character from a different country to which they actuially came from?

Nikita Koloff is actually American, but he got so immersed in his Russian gimmick he actually learnt to speak Russian and refused to break kayfabe even when he was away from wrestling. Pretty sure he even legally changed his name to Nikita Koloff aswell.

Amys right, he was never given a billing at all, no place, no height, no weight. His manager who ever it was at the time would just announce him as the magnificant kendo Nagasaki or whatever they felt like saying, then go off on a promo about how agreat kendo was if they were given the Mic time, if it was Crabtree or whom ever was mcing would again just announce him by name and in his more recent appearances for LDN was billed from an undisclosed location. There was also the couple of unmaskings the one by big daddy (which there was no agreement on by kendo, daddy just did it) and the ceremonial one this would have also shown the lack of Japanese genes for our masked hero.

Re: Wrestlers Who Portrayed Different Nationalities In Their Gimmicks
But he portrayed a samurai.
I'm not stating that the ring announcer said he hailed from Japan and that's not what the OP requested, it was if they portrayed someone from another country to which they came from and as Peter Thornley used a name that both parts relate to Japan (Kendo the fighting stick and Nagasaki the town that was bombed in WW2) and that he wore attire based on samurai culture which is the warrior class of feudal Japan I'd say he certainly 'portrayed' a japanese gimmick.

Rubbish, he was obviously supposed to be Japanese. It doesn't have to explicitly state that for it to be true.

Not rubbish at all crimey, that is the story and the truth from hos own words, if you also read his book it is also in there as that being how he was announced on his first show. British wrestling historians john lister and ray plunkett back this up as being true

Re: Wrestlers Who Portrayed Different Nationalities In Their Gimmicks
The very first line from that link states:
Ancient Japan - a Past-Life Foundation for Present-Day Greatness...
How much more Japanese could he be?
He has not one but two names relating to Japanese culture.
He dresses as a samurai, the Japanese upper class feudal warrior
His website constantly refers to Japanese culture
He goes on about his past life being spent as part of a samurai clan in Japan, the 'spirit from ancient times' is referring to this.
The OP was
It does not state 'Who was announced as hailing from a country that they did not originate from' but PORTRAY
Kendo Nagasaki portrayed someone from Japan.

Getting a bit f'd off with what I say being pushed under the carpet, just because an admin has had there final say on a matter this isn't the first time it had happened and will surely not be the last, peed off to say the least and its only happened since 6wf switched to there own site concidence I think not.
Well I will be posting less as my opinion obvs means jack all

But the point you're arguing isn't actually what was asked!
If the discussion was 'Wrestlers who HAILED from a different place to where they actually came from' then you're correct.
But it was Wrestlers who were portrayed to have a different nationality in their gimmick. Kendo was clearly based upon Japanese culture and heritage.

Erm...when you post something on a forum you should expect it to be debated. It's totally irrelevant whether or not that the admin are the ones debating with you. If you can't cope with your points being challenged on a forum designed for that to happen, then there isn't much point you posting Tooze.

Amy, what you said wasn't pushed under the carpet, it was disagreed with. You're right that he was never hailed as being Japanese, but he portrayed a figure of Japanese origin/descent/spirit which is what the question was.
Nobody has any more right to an opinion because they're admin and nobody has said that we do. There are a lot of admin in wrestling as that's where this whole forum originated.
