Cook having a feel day against Dilshan, he's been smashing him around, got him to drop a tough chance, and now a return catch as well.

well at the moment with this start I think 290 should be the new target
We have so much resource. I hope they hit at 30 and not at 35 like last game

I think Mahela could be a bit more creative with his field settings - too many easy singles given away at the moment, maybe bring up mid-on and/or mid-off at least to Trott who looks like he's happy to just knock singles around all day.
Agree with the too many singles argument, but blame Angelo and not Mahela.
I agree with Nasser - a couple of overs from Malinga would be about right now - at least keep the scoring down and try to get a wicket or two.
At the moment England are in total control.

BTW enough respect to Trott for taking the hitting role when he came on.

Cook's given LBW and he's reviewing it. He has to go. Out for 59.

Cook gone to a slightly poorly executed sweep (off the wrong line) and uses up the review in the process.
Sri Lanka back in this. I'd still get Malinga on for a few.
Trott needs to bat through - 100 at just under a run-a-ball will do nicely.

Well between us we've done for Cook
Used up the review too...in fairness I did think he may have got outside the line , but Hawkeyes are clearly better than mine
Need Root to settle in now.

England starting slow and losing cook at a crucial time, so frustrating.

With the sl batting I'd think we need 280 minimum here.

Re: Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
Nah I thought it was out live. He got his foot across, but then dragged it back in line with the ball.
I can see why he reviewed it though, his head was a long way outside, so he'll have felt he got outside the line. He's the captain and had 50odd at the time, so don't blame him.
Can't believe you'd keep Dilshan on to Root and Trott. Both very happy just nurdling against the spinners. Dilshan will of course pick up a wicket now, but...
142/2 off 30. Just about ideal. Root got a bit longer to play himself in and knock it around which he'll enjoy.
Target 190 off 40 (at least), then 80+ off the last 10.

Eight off that over was just too easy...agree there is a case for a burst of Malinga to the new batsman.
Suppose they want to save him for the power play and the death , but they could regret keeping him up their sleeve if England continue to prosper here...

I think that's more 35 overs ideally.
And malinga really is the ace in the SL hole now isn't he.

Thing is anybody even Malinga can (and has done) go the distance at the end. It seems too much like putting all your eggs in one basket. Even if he bowls brilliantly he'll go for 5 an over at the end you feel. If the other end is going for 10+ that's probably not good enough.

Re: Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
The wicket may actually be a positive for England, Cook wasn't timing the ball that well and he was going at walking pace. Root can pick it up now into the final 20 overs. England doing well.

Re: Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
agree with Mike, SL seem to be relying on Malinga not going for many and their batsmen to do the job. Seems a bit risky to me. England have been busy between the wickets today, though that was a bit sloppy from Trott (the run short that is).

Root is a good busy cricketer, but Sri Lanka have so far made it very easy for him.
You have to assume Malinga will bowl 3 of the PP, but I think England will be happy with 5 an over in the PP, and then really kick on with Morgan and Buttler.

Very much agree. But I think Sri Lanka have Plan A pretty firmly in their minds...
Even if Malinga does restrict the later overs it might not matter if the score is 220 from 43 ...and indeed , who can hold the other end ?
I think they need wickets in the next few overs or England are set fair for 270.

What would England do without him ?

It is of course possible that Dilshan comes out and smacks 100 in no time, and makes a mockery of England's overall score...

Went into town, for emergency fathers day shopping! See us on 171-2. Very good batting from England, its been sensible and effective, setting the complete example of how to bat in ODI cricket IMO. Keep going we can get 270 up. 100% winnable from there. So its going to be interesting, hopefully the weather stays kind to us as well.
Cook batted very well. Trott doing superbly well and now Root is going well!
COME ON ENGLAND!

Neither do I much. I think as a bowler you should be comfortable with first containing then dismissing him if you bowl balls coming back in and a few slower balls.
Just getting some reverse jinxing in.
Sangakara quite probably the main danger man, but he's struggled against Swann at times.

Obviously you can never write Jayawardene off either, and Mathews can be difficult to shift, but if we get the ball moving laterally I fully expect us to defend 250+.
Re: Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
Even Slinga Malinga not looking like getting them a breakthrough. The 2 batsmen are dealing with him alright. England are pretty much for 280 at least.

Re: Champions Trophy - England and Wales 2013
Still going to plan...I am still thinking 270 will be enough , though as Mike says a Dilshan master class could render that view misguided...
Of course sometimes you can't do anything about an individual bit of brilliance (and Dilshan owes them a few for his fielding errors!) ; but I fancy this England bowling outfit to defend pretty well under lights.
Still got to make another 80 or so but you'd like the odds on that from here.

They say young Kusal Perera is Jayasuriya like in his approach to the game and many people in Sri Lanka seem to rate him so high.

Dinesh Chandimal has scored some quality ODI runs, even in England as well. So in theory SL do have a decent lineup. England would do well not to underestimate them.

Malinga 0-21 off 3 in the PP which kind of illustrates my point.
201/2 off 40. Still ideal. Now to have some fun.

Oh I wouldn't underestimate them , msp . Certainly have a number of players who can score freely. But I don't think a chase under lights against this England team is at all easy , and although England are rattling along well enough I'm not convinced the pitch is really ideal for fast scoring...in truth I am not very impressed with the Sri Lankan bowling today , apart from the new ball period.
200 up inside forty.
That was the best power play I can remember seeing England play in years !

Herath into his last over. Mathews and Dilshan have bowled the 5th bowler's 10 as well. But Kulasekhara is not much of a death over bowler. He went for 12 in his last over, a couple more left as well. Mathews have a problem here.

I think England's batsmen have been abducted by aliens and we are watching imposters -the batting power play yeilding 37 runs and no wickets? More commonly no runs and 37 wickets ..
