Which round will Federer lose at Halle?
Halle 2013
First topic message reminder :
Nadal has decimated the field, by withdrawing, from Halle.
The tattered remainder of Halle draw looks like
http://www.atpworldtour.com/Share/Event-Draws.aspx?EventId=500&Year=2013
As an aside, the Grass Chewing has now a new pair of COWs (Champions of the Old World) cudding (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cud) together some Doubles.
http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/Tennis/2013/06/23/Halle-Federer-Haas-Teaming-Up-For-First-Time.aspx
Daily Schedule - http://www.atpworldtour.com/Scores/Schedule.aspx?EventId=500
Who wants to bet on the next player to beat a certain 17-slam winner?
Will it be Stubby or Wang-waver? Or perhaps the Jerzy COW...

Federer through against Stebe.
Looking forward to Gulbis v Haas tomorrow.

The FH was dire against Stebe. Zverev has two good scalps in Basic and Goffin.lydian wrote:Who's your money on LF?
Monfils has played two good matches.
If Gasquet can find his grass feet, I suspect an all-French final, despite BB's optimism.
Gulbis can take out Haas depending on which Gulbis turns up.

Haas up a set in a close TB. Gulbis's display of disgust on missing shots is not good for him mentally.

2MPs from error by Gulbis. Ace clinches the match. Haas looking good.
Gulbis. But gives away his broken racquet.

Wow. No bps for Ernests and Tommy converts 1 from 17.
Check out the stats; Gulbis served 102 points, Tommy 63. Never seen a disparity like that.

The first set TB was close, just a couple of errors from both in the TB. It could have gone either way.

Henman Bill wrote:But seriously, I predict he will win it. Jancowicz on good day is a threat, and Haas may have had time to recover. I think Haas is a threat if he is fit after last week and gets that far. Raonic is clearly a threat.
The bottom half looks light to me, easier. Less big servers in there. I predict Kohlschreiber vs Nishikori in R3 and the winner of that goes on to the final.
QF
Federer beats Janowicz
Raonic beats Haas
Kohlschreiber beats Nishikori
Gasquet vs Mayer
SF
Federer beats Raonic
Kohli beats Gasquet
F
Federer beats Kohli
A cunning part of my prediction is that there are 2 Mayers in Gasquet's section, and I haven't stated above which one I am betting on.
So let's see how I did in my quarter final predictions.
Federer vs Janowicz -----> Janowicz beaten in R1, and predicting Federer to win one match is hardly genius
Raonic vs Haas ------> Raonic lost to Monfils and predicting Haas to win one match against Gulbis is not exactly wildly impressive
Kohli v Nishikori -----> Kohli through, but Nishikori lost to Youzhny.
Gasquet v Mayer ------>Hooray I got one right (by predicting the seeds to win! genius!)
At this stage I've done fairly average or badly. Need Kohlschreiber in the final as predicted to regain some credibility.

Terrible entire match from Zverev, serving for the 6th time to avoid a double-bagel.

In a way this is a bad result for Roger.
By that I mean it encompasses false hope with fans earmarking him as being in hot form going into Wimbledon, building up the expectations. I say stay grounded and remember this bloke is ranked 156 in the world.

Re: Halle 2013
@TP Zverev played badly, compared to his first two matches. Who gave him the match strategy gave him bad advice?
Not once did I see him pressure Federer's BH. Just suicidal runs to the net and Federer made him pay.
Last double-bagel in Bo5 is Del Potro @AO 2009. Gaudio @TMC 2005 is the last Bo3 double bagel.

Re: Halle 2013
Federer didn't make many mistakes, but at the same time I think Zverev played into his hands. Zverev was serve-volleying, but his volleys weren't good enough and so with a lot of the time of the 4th or 6th point of the rally, Federer would pass Zverev who was stranted at the net.
Just looked at the shortest match records. Time-wise I was suprised to see at ATP level in the Open-era both are held by Brits. Rusedski holds the fastest win in a best of 3 (29 minutes) and Murray holds the fastest win in a best of 5 (52 minutes).

CC - there is much in what you say. Always difficult for someone of Federer's ability (ie. .... someone who can win matches effortlessly, against very inexperienced opposition, even if well below his best) to know just where his game is at until properly tested.
Didn't see any of the match myself but after fighting his way through two previous rounds (plus qualies ...?) to get this far, that must have been one helluva reality check for poor Zverev.

Those stats really surprised me too ryan - I would not have had Murray, clinicallly brilliant though he can be at his best, as the fastest over bo5. I am further surprised that Rusedski managed the record for bo3 - today's elite have obviously taken the art of towelling down to, previously unimagined, heights!

Very ordinary from Zverev. I expected better from him after the last two matches. I would have preferred to have Basic rather than Zverev. This guy lost the match in the locker room.

False hope is worse than no hope. Just a bad roller coaster for the spectators. I expect the winner of Haas/Monfils to put much more pressure on Federer.

Re: Halle 2013
The way Tommy looked at RG, and the fact that he will want to hang on to his title desperately, makes him my marginal favourite over Fed - still it will be a very good sharpening up session for Fed whichever way it goes.
If it is Monfils, then Tommy will have extracted the one brilliant match from M's racquet this tournament!
@thespecialJuan - aahh. Presume Luxembourg coach in hurry to get off court?!

It is never a bad result when you have double bagelled someone. It gives you complete confidence. How does losing by a greater margin help you? That is a logic I keep hearing, and it isn't a logic. Federer is defending champ at Wimb for a good reason.

Perhaps I should have said a bad result for his fans as it brings about false hope/expectation and if/when that isn't delivered the disappointment is greater. And yes I know Federer is defending champion but even his fans will tell you that Roger has deteriorated in areas since he won Wimbledon last year.

Fed needs a slap in his face for not giving the young guy at least a game on each set.
Disappointed with Fed today.
Any top 10 player that double bagels a novice, I will slap them when I see them on the street.
