I'm backing Warren's knighthood.
Petition...
This is a petition to award Warren Gatland a knighthood on the successful series win over Her Majesties former colony of Australia.
I believe as a New Zealander, he is able to be awarded the honour of a knighthood, but if not the alternative honoury knighthood could be awarded.
After all Clive Woodentop got awarded a knighthood for far less an achievement. Warren Gatland has had to mould an unbeatable side together from 4 nations so that they play as one, whilst continually being questioned by armchair experts whose only goal is to criticise because their selfish nationalistic pride has been hurt.
I say we'll done Mr Gatland and welcome to the knighthood band of brothers.
Oh and let's not forget an award for Warbs ...

Don't really think Gatland gives two hoots about the armchair experts.
Silly article this.

Go on then... I will bite... Sir Clive got his Knighthood around 2003 while as manager of England. A quiet year to be sure where not much happened in the rugby world and he didn't really achieve anything. Not compared to thrashing a semi pro scratch team whilst on a tour. Gats gets my vote.

Totally disagree, this is not a silly article.....
... It's completely stupid and pointless... But eh, that's what you get for having a few pints mid week then logging onto this forum as there's nothing on the telly...

Oh and if you're bored, Professor Marcus du Sautoy explores why we are driven to measure and quantify the world around us. He begins by telling the story of the metre and the second. On BBC4 right now ...

Ian McGeechan got his knighthood in 2009..... 20 years after his 89 victory and 12 years after his 97 victory. I think Gatland has a way to go yet.

Couldnt care less about knighthoods but I do think Gatland has done enough in his career to be considered a NH great. A Lions series victory would really cement his status as a legend though.

Another devalued system that encourages people to do the simple thing, working areas and volumes in imperial keeps your mind nimble, just like LSD (the currency). Probably why we had so many great engineers. This foreign stuff all in 10's and 100's is the lazy mans measurements.
I meen, a 22 m line; weird measurement. The old 25yd is sensible even by metric standards, i.e. 1/4 of 100. They didn't change the 10m line line to 9.14m did they?
My monica says it all.

No one should be getting a knighthood - it's 2013 !!! They should be confined to the "way out of date" bin.
If someone wants to become a knight they should be prepared to fight in Afganistan on a horse with a shield and a swiss army knife.

I wouldn't watch any documentary by a commoner, me. Unless he becomes Sir Duke Lord of the Admiralty Professor Marcus du Sautoy, I don't think he'd have a lot to say on the subject that I'd be interested in.

Re: Petition...
There is nothing wrong with awarding achievement... most countries have similar systems of some type or another. The issue with the UK is that they don't necessarily award for real achievement rather its often a "jobs for the boys award" or something to appease the average Daily Mail readers.

Maybe youre right but its the idea of a title and insisting that everyone calls that individual by that title seems a little pompous and outdated to me. Im not British anyway but even if I was I dont think I'd be referring to Alex Ferguson as Sir Alex for example.

Jeez kiwis, it's 2013, time to end the cultural cringe and if you want to honour some of your own then invent an order of the silver fern or something like that. At least the Aussie and Canadians stopped their people from taking titles - and the Canadians even scrapped that old crook Conrad Black's citizenship when Thatcher made him a lord.
To hear the likes of Gower, Holding, Lloyd referring to Sir Ian when Beefy is sitting right beside them on Sky's cricket coverage would be hilarious if it wasn't so vomit-inducing. And to read the Telegraph continually refer to Sir Bradley Wiggins when Brad has said he didn't want to use the sirship is equally vomit-inducing.

There was an older bloke at work who had the shock of his life when he googled a company we buy stuff from (Think it was S&M Gauges), and got a heap of 'other' sites suggested to him.

OK, he has built up a lot of credit but I wish he's give up the "Sir Alex" sh1t. Fergie is one of the more unpleasant individuals around and part of the reason my passion for soccer disappeared long ago.

Agreed, I LOVED football as a kid. Does nothing for me now. But that goal against England when I was watching as a 13 year old in a Spanish bar packed with Irish and English folks was an amazing experience for me.

Irish people can receive knighthoods from the Queen but are not permitted under the Irish constitution to hold a title.
However, one Irish rugby was granted the right by the Irish Govt to hold a title earned through knighthood. who is he?

I'm bothered that so many sportspeople, politicians, and wealthy businessmen are awarded knighthoods and honours in general where's there are so many scientists, sociologists and generally worthy people who dedicated their lives to quietly making the empire/commonwealth/country a better place who go equally silently ignored.
It's corrupt, riddled with cronyism and media driven and needs a total top down overhaul. Starting with the Queen.
Where's Ted Codd's knighthood? For instance.

I agree with you their Glorious.... if you're a Doctor, you never get recognised by the establishment unless you end up doing some government position or take some role as a secretary of a royal college or something. Nevermind the thousands of lives some of these chaps save throughout the career... 10 times more than some "jobs for the boys" pen pusher in whitehall who have done absolutely nothing in their career.

They even gave one to Robert Mugabe in the 90s. So not only did the Brits save his life a number of times during the Rhodesian bush wars we gave him a knighthood, plumped up their economy for a number of years and then how did he repay us....
Whoever thought of all of the above should hang their heads in shame!
Just goes to show what a farce they are.
