Who would YOU start against the Wallabies (scrumhalf)?
The 606v2 Lions Selection Scrumhalf
Alright guys!
I figured we could get this going to give us a bit of a heads up on the general consensus of opinions for Lions Test shirts. We'll have a starting XV in no time BUT I am going to leave vote cancelling on so people can change their minds over the next 8 days or so.
Keep the debate honest and punch above the belt.
ps: remember this is not a prediction, it is a "who would YOU select" poll.
So far our team is
Vunipola-Youngs-Jones
Gray-POC (c)
SOB-Heaslip-Tipuric
Philips
Has looked good on tour, has experience of these big match games. He is extremely dangerous around the fringes and runs great lines off the ruck, the base of the scrum and also the tail of the lineout. His box kicking is also excellent and is a really strong exit strategy. His passing (or rather his service) is slower than a traditional scrumhalf but he really ties in fringe defenders.
Youngs
Youngs has looked relatively sharp when playing with the Lions and has been doing well in an England and Leicester shirt. He gives the quickest service as he doesn't pick and drift before passing. He doesn't have the level of physicality that Philips or Murray does but in terms of ball skills he is very good and also very quick.
Murray
Murray was definitely the bolter of the party, he is in the Philips mould of 9 play. He is strong and has a very big boot as well. He like Philips doesn't offer the traditional quick scrumhalf service and his pass is slower than Philips' but he has shown that he is dangerous and can make things happen.
Ok guys get the debate started and get the votes coming in.
Much love.

Re: The 606v2 Lions Selection Scrumhalf
I thought this would be an easy choice, and I would just type the name Mike Phillips and be done with it, but as I think about it things it is not that simple. First up I want to say I am no Mike Phillips fan, and have been critical of him and his play many times over the past 4 years, but there is something about the Lions test jersey that seems to really bring out the best in the man. He is a player who I think really buys into the Lions ethos and I have no doubt that if he starts (which I think he will) he will do an excellent job for us.
However.
Thinking about the opposition I wonder whether Ben Youngs would possibly be a better fit. He has got the better of Genia and Australia before, and has looked in good form recently, so should be confident if he gets on the pitch. He brings very a different problem for Australia than Phillips does, and has the speed of thought that could trouble them in what I think will be a tight game.
It is genuinely a tough call between these two, but on reflection I would start Phillips with Youngs coming off the bench against a tiring Australian team.

Couldn't put it better than Ozzy to be honest. Phillips is a b*stard but he's OUR b*stard

I really think youngs is the better option to fit in with the huge backline gatland will pick purely because of his speed of service - plus he's gotten the better of genia before!

I find this one hard to call, Philips seems better as a player but I think his style is all wrong against the Aussies. I think our backs need quicker ball to get break the Aussies down and with Philips there they won't get it.

Ozzy - The Lions jersey is not the only jersey he plays well in - He was rampant in the last 6 nations match and destroyed Youngs, albeit with a far better platform - But as a SH contest Youngs could not contain him. Again these arguments become so polarised with so many people -ve above Phillips.

Re: The 606v2 Lions Selection Scrumhalf
Ruby, I do not argue that when Wales beat us in Cardiff Phillips had a great game and dominated Youngs, but in terms of this selection debate how they fare against each other is not relevant. How each is likely to fare against Genia and Australia is the key factor.
Yes people can be negative about Phillips, but there are those who also hate on Youngs, and I don't think you'll ever change that.
In this debate I can completely see peoples case for Youngs, and in some regards I do agree that he possibly a better fit.
My reason for going back to Phillips is that as well as imposing our attacking game on Wallabies, we need to stop theirs, and Phillips brings a better balance of those two things.

You aren't going to out Genia Genia, an extra flanker is always handy.

Re: The 606v2 Lions Selection Scrumhalf
Sorry, seems I can not now write under a quote - so here is my response to Philips in the 6 nations....
Not sure that is really true though - he had one and a half good games in the 6 nations - if you look back almost everyone was calling for him to be dropped after 3 games, even the Welsh
I do not think he has played that well on tour either - yet
So I would go for Youngs, who seems in better form and may be a better foil for the Ozzies
However Gatland will pick Phillips regardless of what he does on the pitch, so will back him on the day

You say that, but in fairness Youngs has outplayed him before.

Youngs and Genia have met twice, with Youngs being the better player on both occasions. However as this was back in 2010 (one home, one away) not really relevant.
Phillips will start, so not much point discussing anything else really.

Re: The 606v2 Lions Selection Scrumhalf
I don't think it is about out Genia-ing Genia, but Genia will give our backs more of a chance than Philips will.
I have a bit of bug-bearer with Mike Philips style scrumhalves. I basically just don't want our backs hamstrung by slower service, I think it is the worst thing you can do to a backline (I am an Irish fan I have been dealing with this since 2009).

Hopefully Forumotion fix that bug soon, I'm having the same problem. If you click on the "switch editor mode" button (3 or 4 icons across from the emoticons smiley face) you can get something like the old editor back, which will let you quote.

In fact I reckon Youngs has got the better of Genia a number of times. 2010 in particular. He also had Aaron Smith (similar type player) jittery in the last AIs.
When you're up against a massive pack of forwards like NZ, FRA or SA go Phillips. When you're up against a deadly backline like AUS... Youngs gets the nod for me as his pace and sweeper play behind the line is very useful.

Sexton thrives on quick service and for that reason my choice has to be Youngs.

Eoin Reddan is no world beater but Sexton has always played better for Ireland and Leinster with him at 9 instead of the likes of Murray, Isaac Boss and Tomas O'Leary.RubyGuby wrote:When does Sexton ever get quick service

Risky-
Mind fkuc!!!
Good point for Youngs there, the quicker ball he gets the quicker and better Sexton will play and we will get our monsters (Tuilagi/North/etc) running on to the ball

I have never rated Phillips, I rate him even less against scrummy's like Genia. Youngs gets the nod from me.
