surrey vs yorkshire county championship
Surrey have named a twelve man squad for the LV=County Championship match against Yorkshire at Headingley starting on Friday.
Kevin Pietersen is included in a Championship squad for the first time this season having recovered from the knee injury that has kept him out of action since March.
Jade Dernbach in unavailable for the game having been named in the England squad for the NatWest T20 games against New Zealand at the Kia Oval and Matthew Dunn comes into the Championship squad for the first time this campaign.
Gary Wilson and Zafar Ansari have not been selected for the trip to Headingley and will be included in the 2nd XI squad to play the T20 double header against Kent on Friday.
The Surrey squad to play Yorkshire at Headingley on Friday 21st June, Saturday 22nd June, Sunday 23rd June and Monday 24th June :
Vikram Solanki (capt)
Rory Burns
Arun Harinath
Ricky Ponting
Kevin Pietersen
Zander de Bruyn
Steven Davies
Jon Lewis
Tim Linley
Chris Tremlett
Gary Keedy
Matthew Dunn
tough on zafar that understandable for wilson
department store or clive to miss out imo

Re: surrey vs yorkshire county championship
Thanks, JimBob.
Pleased to see Clive get a call up. Tough on Zafar, as you say.
There's a case - at least from a batting point of view - for Lewis to play. Even if you're comfortable with Tremlett at number eight after his slogfest at Arundel, can we really go with Linley, Keedy and Dunn at 9, 10, jack? I think Keedy and Dunn have about 6 Surrey CC matches between them and not a single run!
Mike Holding might well disagree with that. I've heard him say more than once, ''it is the job of the batsmen to bat and the job of the bowlers to bowl.'' Fair enough although his team mates were often a bit better than some of our crew!
There again - tieing myself in knots - we have on paper a very strong top seven. Pietersen might possibly be as low as five.
All in all, I suspect Clive might be stuck with carrying the drinks. However, that's still closer to the first team than has been seen likely for him up until now.
If Keedy mucks up this time, hard to see him coming back again.

Re: surrey vs yorkshire county championship
Clive Dunn in squad - as suggested by Guildford. It would be good if he got a chance.
Curious that Ansari dropped for Keedy. Burger van is in the T20 squad for the seconds - interesting to see how he gets on.
Bowling attack doesn't inspire huge confidence - but who knows what might happen if Tremlett strikes form. Maybe there is a wicket somewhere in the department store.
Weather looking rather unsettled over the weekend for the north. At least if it affects our match it might also rain on the party at Derby for the bottom of the table clash.

Corporal - West Ham links being shown as half way through the season you're following relegation rivals as closely as your own side!!

Re: surrey vs yorkshire county championship
And if you look at the Prem table on the Beeb, look who's bottom already!
I suppose we've got to play one spinner...............that's Keedy by the way! So it's looks like Clive will miss out unfortunately, although I'd play him in place of Lewis
We probably won't miss him much anyway, but it really puzzles me how Dernbach plays International cricket!

So England have saved Surrey from the Dernbach threat I see. Interested to see how Pietersen goes, main reason I am here.

Re: surrey vs yorkshire county championship
Msp - No, I'm not at the game. It's at Leeds which is a long way from my neck of the woods. I am though following it on radio commentary from time to time (I don't know if you'll be able to access it but Shelsey gave a link on the last County Championship thread).
Bad light currently stopped play. Yorks 50-0 off 20. Not what Surrey wanted. According to Churchy (the commentator for all Surrey games) and Dave Callaghan (ditto for all Yorks games) who are working together, Surrey's bowling was very economical for the first 10 overs when Tremlett and Lewis (aka 'department store') were bowling but not particularly challenging as Lyth and Lees, Yorks' openers, were able to safely leave much of it. The run rate has gone up with Linley (aka 'the Viscount') and de Bruyn ('the Brain') coming on to bowl.
Early lunch now being taken ....

70 odd for 2 as Tremlett and the Brain bag the openers soon after lunch. Both bowling well by all accounts.

Re: surrey vs yorkshire county championship
Yorks 103-3 off 40.
The 3rd wicket (Sayers) was taken by the Viscount.
Good effort so far (as always - have to emphasise ''so far'') by Surrey against the table toppers. Most staggering of all is that in his 10 overs department store hasn't bowled a no ball!
Can we continue to chip away and stop a meaningful partnership being built? Probably not ....

Re: surrey vs yorkshire county championship
292-5 at stumps.
A couple of late wickets for Lewis (and incredibly nil no-balls!) give a bit more respectability to Surrey's performance but still certainly Yorks' day after we put 'em in. A commanding century from Gale with good and sensible support from Ballance but our bowling generally (from commentary I heard) appeared to lack bite. The Brain bowled more overs than Tremlett, what's that about?
At this stage, hard to see CC victory number one coming from this match ....
PS For those on Pietersen watch, he was described as 'quite sprightly' in the field and bowled 4 tidy overs before tea.

Unfortunately we've lacked the bowlers to take 20 wickets in a match for years now. Changing the manager mid-season won't change that.

We got the two wickets - but about 100 runs too late. Pretty much the story of the season.

The Viscount dismissed Hodd to secure 2nd bowling point. Short of a rapid collapse (3 wickets in 6 overs) looks unlikely we will get a third.

Morning Corporal - getting a bit concerned about your compulsive following of the Derbys v Somerset match and desire for it to end in a draw. Trust you and the troops won't be looking to dig up the wicket at nightfall a la ''George Davis is Innocent''!

Guildford - may the best team win at Derby. Looks like Somerset scent the chance to get a result - certainly the openers rattling along at a fair rate.
Maybe someone should dig up the rough just on a length at Headingly with the slogan "Keedy is a spinner".

So a Surrey win is well out the equation now.............again!
Just a question of saving the follow on, which is going to be in excess of 250 now, to save the game, unless our best player, the rain, comes and does it for us

Harinath dropped in the slips by Lyth Umpires consulting about the light - but carrying on at the moment.
"Gloomy it is" says Churchy. And now they are off, with score at 30 - 0.

Re: surrey vs yorkshire county championship
Surely Solanki could have backed himself to see out 8 balls with Burns? Much as I admire Linley's determination, he's not likely to last long when play resumes and his early wicket will only be a morale booster for Yorks.
Yet again, we earlier allowed the opposition tail to wag away too freely. 306-6 to 433-9 declared. Just not good enough.
With the weather as it is, we should be able to get away with a draw. However, that's still going to leave us winless and the longer that remains the case the more likely we are to be relegated.

Very easy to decry the use of a night watchman even when he achieves the objective. As for talking about 'The Tail', it's time people came to the realisation that these days all batsmen have a certain degree of capability whatever their number on the scorecard, and Plunkett and Siddy more than most.

Curiously, on Cricinfo, Linley's nicknames are given as "Sheephead" and Bambi". No mention of Viscount. He's had one or two decent knocks recently, so let's hope for another today.
