surrey vs yorkshire LV county championship
Surrey have named a thirteen man squad for the final game of the 2013 season against Yorkshire in the LV=County Championship at the Kia Oval.
Matthew Dunn, Tom Jewell and Jason Roy are all included in the squad but Jade Dernbach, Stuart Meaker and George Edwards are unavailable for selection due to injury.
The Surrey squad to play Yorkshire in the LV=County Championship at the Kia Oval on Tuesday 24th September, Wednesday 25th September, Thursday 26th September and Friday 27th September :
Gareth Batty (capt)
Hashim Amla
Zafar Ansari
Rory Burns
Steven Davies
Matthew Dunn
Tom Jewell
Tim Linley
Jason Roy
Dominic Sibley
Vikram Solanki
Chris Tremlett
Gary Wilson
even though the game is a dead rubber it's a shame curran couldn't make the squad

Re: surrey vs yorkshire LV county championship
Thanks, JimBob.
I too thought Curran would make the squad.
Not sure what is going on with Jewell - had heard he'd been released. I know Carrot (where is he by the way?) has questioned Jewell's ability and I understand that but, my word, we haven't half mucked the lad around!
No idea who misses out tomorrow. Possibly an idea to give Davies a break and let Wilson and/or Burns keep.
Going tomorrow and then staying for a members' event in the evening -should be embarrassing for some of the top brass!

Maybe Curran isn't able to bunk off school? Can't really put in a sick note if you are playing first class cricket!

Two wickets for Ansari following the earlier ones from Dunn.

None for Batty - how did he get a 2 year extension?

Because he is an integral part of the dressing room! !

Re: surrey vs yorkshire LV county championship
I don't agree with Batty being given a two year contract extension but he's bowled okay today with no luck. A missed stumping and 3 or 4 close but unsuccessful lbw shouts.
Meanwhile, as might be expected, Bairstow and Ballance proving too strong for Ansari and Jewell.

Yeah, we've done so well this season. Batty has 26 first class wickets at over 40 apiece this season. Simply not good enough.Corporalhumblebucket wrote:Because he is an integral part of the dressing room! !

Is Rashid playing? He's had a cracking season with bat and ball!

Re: surrey vs yorkshire LV county championship
A fairly reasonable and possibly encouraging performance today against a strong (certainly batting wise) Yorkshire side.
Although they all showed their inexperience at times, Dunn, Jewell and Ansari each deservedly took a couple of wickets.
Pace and hostility from Dunn which was regularly threatening - sometimes too leg side which cost runs although also got a wicket so can't complaint too much (unsure if that was a deliberate tactic).
Jewell came on first change. That role rather flatters his bowling but he at least puts more demands on the batsmen than the Brain. He also stuck at it. Bairstow and Ballance seemed to have the measure of him and were taking easy runs off too many wide of off stump balls when he deceived the former with a beauty that moved back in and had him leg before. He then dismissed Gale courtesy of a fine low catch at slip from Solanki.
Whilst Ansari bowled too short at times, there was also some nice flight and turn.
Batty and Linley were both unlucky not to get a wicket. The latter had to try and perform the difficult dual role of workhorse and intended strike bowler. He bowled nine overs on the reel from the start and was pretty challenging. He also had Rashid groping around off stump late in the day which, with a bit of better fortune, would have resulted in an edge behind.
Fielding was okay but -like the match atmosphere - naturally enough had a dead rubber feel to it.
For Yorks, Ballance took control well and suggested that the England selectors know what they are doing. Bairstow too was looking good in both defence and attack when he suddenly fell - some may consider that's a worrying habit he has. Jacques had a bit of luck off both Batty and Dunn but generally earned his runs and played a significant part in getting his county on the way to what looks like being an imposing first innings total.

Changing of the guard? All 10 wickets taken by the three younger bowlers.

IF we had restricted Ballance to 50, it would look a pretty decent effort. As it is, I'm now wondering if Surrey will bowl again this season.

Good to see Ansari amongst the wickets. He reminds me a bit of Dockrell: not the biggest turner of the ball but varies his flight nicely and works over batsmen. Could play some of the shorter formats at a higher level IMO.

Sibley reaches his highest first class score - 13* at the moment.

72 - 0 at tea. Surrey's highest opening partnership of the season.

I like Ansari a lot. Academically he's highly gifted but he's also a very sensible cricketer and a well rounded individual.Mike Selig wrote:Good to see Ansari amongst the wickets. He's been handicapped a bit by being at uni until now (next season will be his first full one at Surrey), batting up and down the order between 1 and 8 and not, until recently, being given much of a bowl.
Bowling wise, the comparison with Dockrell is a good one. There are other strings to Ansari's bow though. As well as his batting, he's a first rate fielder. That would appear to his advantage and has led to some suggestions of him being made vice-captain (to Smth) next year. However, there is perhaps a danger of people - and possibly himself - being unsure of what he does best and needs to be deveoped. I think he has too much about him for that to ultimately hold him back but I suspect the Club need to give it greater thought.

Somerset being bailed out by a good performance from Warks/an average one from Derby.

Re: surrey vs yorkshire LV county championship
Calm down, dear! First priority facing around 450 is to get an opening partnership going and make sure you don't lose the match. Time in the middle is good experience for Sibley as well. Need to realise, I'm afraid, that Yorks are a strong side and we're not.jimbobgooner wrote:even in a dead rubber game we cant get the run rate above 2 a over

Still the case near the end of day 2 that every wicket taken and every run scored so far by Surrey in this match is down to the new rather than the old guard.

That may be so, Corporal, but you're overlooking "integral" aspects. I twice saw Tremlett take out the drinks yesterday and even once collect a sweater.Corporalhumblebucket wrote:Still the case near the end of day 2 that every wicket taken and every run scored so far by Surrey in this match is down to the new rather than the old guard.

Single takes Sibley onto 99.... Keeps the strike.
Sibley becomes the youngest player ever to score a first class century for Surrey.
