But for me Broad took the edge off that win as a sporting contest for me as a sports fan.
Haddin didn't walk either so he's just as culpable (or not depending on viewpoint), but England had been more judicious in their use of reviews which is exactly what they're there for.

Team challenges might have kept Cockers off the naughty step (if used judiciously).
Maybe Hartley too.

Can't see how a rugby fan can possibly condemn Broad given what we see in every one of our games...

Like Mighty Ducks II - Rise of Plucky, the good guys fight back starts today! Oztralya to win so convincingly it'll be 2-all after this test.

More convincingly than England won the last one? that would be some performance

Not secular Msti, but rather just recognizing our limitations. I like to bask in the glow of awesomeness and rubbing it in wherever I can without actually being called to task on detailed knowledge of what happened. I know for instance that over the last 40 or so tests we are leading 20-9, but I don't know precisely where this particular series stands.

We have won 3 out of the last 4(going to be 4 out of 5). Aus are rubbish. England are the best. What else do you need to know?

I just saw the Usman dismissal. I take it you got to second best based on a lot of home victories?

Is old trafford usually a big scoring wicket? How many would we need to get before you start to feel a little pressure?

About 650, boomer
Seriously I'll become bothered at about 350. The draw is effectively a win as li'l Ern will stay where it belongs.

Re: The rugby fans' Ashes thread
Obviously it depends on their first-innings score, but this was a good toss for Australia to win: they get to bat first. We'll see how England fare batting second - and batting last, which they haven't had to do so far this series. It's always better to be bowling at a side when you already have runs on the board yourself.

Sorry boomer, but is a bit too mainstream for me.
I'd like the Oz to win this one to open the series but as I write Rogers Is out(84) 129/3.

Amazing how good Australia look when they're only being gyped once by DRS rather than 7 times in an in innings, isn't it?

What an absolute croc of shoite. The majority of DRS calls have been ludicrous. The ockers have had the raw end of the pineapple throughout the series. England had one dubious call and gone off like a bunch of tired two year olds.

I make it 2 very dubious calls today alongside at least another fairly dubious 1, maybe one more vs a single howler against the Aussies, but you are entitled to your own view on what is happening. Obviously you've also forgotten about Agar etc

Re: The rugby fans' Ashes thread
Mostly listened on radio over the internet today. Didn't sound like too many controversial decisions.
But I blame Portnoy for today's result. If he didn't mention he wanted Oz to win, we would probably have held them below 200. Bad karma he made.

Re: The rugby fans' Ashes thread
Knew it! Had to be.
Was probably why all of a sudden we saw Shane Warne's face all over the tv, looking even more smug than usual, if that's possible. Damn it, he knew he had an ace up his sleeve.
For friday, can we sacrifice a kangaroo and drink its blood or something? That will wipe that self-satisfied look off his face.

The second test, The turning point was an absolutely ridicous "hot spot" DRS which I called out at the time. From there on in Australia were victim to an endless array of similar hotspot calls all of which the studio commentary team declared to be great decisions and "wonderful use" of DRS by England.
There seems to be a real lack of understanding of how inaccurate these technologies are. The assumption im seems to be for many, that if "snicko" shows a frequency response then the batsman *must* have hit it, if there is a pixel of light anywhere on a bat then hotspot has "proven" the ball hit the bat and that if the frankly ridiculous hawk-eye shows an animated ball hitting animated stumps then this is what would have happened in reality. I'm sorry but most of these technologies are totally over sold and used well beyond their reasonable parameters.
Aside from the operational restrictions which are largely ignored, the systems are inaccurate by design because cost cutting to make the product economically and operatioanlly viable requires computational intensity to be reduced such that the inaccuracies are well beyond what they are initially stated to be.
And it's worth remembering that these aren't passive systems, they are "operated" and the output is modified for presentation for broadcast TV purposes. Essentially what you are seeing is a glossy cobbled up fantasy based on interpreted evidence coming out of a mathematical model which known to be flawed in a variety of ways.
Believing in these things for anything other than the most straight forward and clear cut of cases is like believing in the Star Trek transporter or thinking the Matrix is real.
Thy were designed to eliminate the "howler" not to be making fringe judgements on edge cases. They are being totally misapplied and the media know it but the controversy makes better TV

Snicko got that hot spot you are talking about and we heard the sound!
Yes i agree that hotspot is rubbish- But you still just sound like a sore loser. Just accept the fact that England were better and won the game and that both teams had bad decisions, we are not whining about ours- What ever you want to make up. YOU ARE THE ONE WHINING!.. Get over it dude! seriously.
PS:
I love the fact you talk about a turning point when england effectively won by an innings if not more!!!
You are going to have to do better than that mate..

Re: The rugby fans' Ashes thread
Snicko is a crock.
The microphone is at the batters end. Of course there are a variety of noises when the ball passes the batsmen and he attempts to make a shot. Now snicko applies a whole bunch of frequency filters which are manually calibrated and adjusted per delivery and recorded on a sound feed which is *manually* synchronised with the images by an operator using visual cues. It's akin to having a guy with a microphone making a "chik!" Sound when the ball passes the bat. It's an utter load of twaddle.
Aside from that - how do you think such things are "made faster"? Yep, they are made less accurate.
It's a load of old cobblers and if you believe it, you must also believe in the tooth fairy and Father Christmas.

Made faster???
dude just read up on it please. If you dont understand what it means to make snicko get results faster then read up on it. They are trying to get it in to the next series (aus v eng!)
It is right that the umpires should have access to all technologies out there- but we and there are not stupid.. We understand the limitations of the said tech..
You on the other hand are just spouting nonsense because you cant get over the fact a team got comprehesively beat.. You need to ask yourself about what you believe in not discredit others!
