Music Cup Round 9 - Euros
Music Cup Round 9 - Europe
As this weekend is Eurovision then this weeks round is any song from Europe (excluding UK & Ireland).
As usual pick your favourite three from the list below!
Rasmus - In the Shadows https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxL0QLvauBU
Focus - Hocus Pocus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGaVUApDVuY
Aha - Take On Me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djV11Xbc914
Abba - Waterloo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sj_9CiNkkn4
Rammstein - Ich Will https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4K6ZxDwi34
Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAjR4_CbPpQ
Michael Schenker Group - Doctor Doctor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXB2UD6mmJE
Phoenix – Everything is Everything https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFVeSefg72U
Rammstein - Fire frei! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHUsIU161w4&feature=related
Abba - Does your Mother Know? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkL7Fkigfn8
I would always advise to listen to the tracks first before making your choice and in this round I especially advise it.

I saw Focus in Cardiff at the end of last year (without Jan Ackermann) and they were fantastic. I hadn't thought of Hocus Pocus but that is the best song on there by!

Re: Music Cup Round 9 - Europe
ABBA wrote some wicked pop tunes.
However, I think the two picked are poor choices from their catalogue.

Re: Music Cup Round 9 - Europe
Abba wrote some of the greatest pop tunes of the 70s and 80s and I'm not ashamed to admit to voting for Waterloo.
Some good songs on the list, but some glaring omissions too (IMHO). Where are Boney M, Bjork, Nena (99 Red Balloons is a pop classic), Plastic Bertrand??
Daft Punk - awesome choice

Re: Music Cup Round 9 - Europe
Bjork would have been a contender for my pick, love the crazy pixie but with her it's hard to really pick a stand out track, her most well known is also probably her worst (It's oh so quiet)
Re: Music Cup Round 9 - Europe
Others that I were considering were Air - All I Need or Sexy Boy & The Hives - Hate to Say I Told You So.
Re: Music Cup Round 9 - Europe
I considered all of the following:
Wind of Change - Scorpions
Final Countdown - Europe
Hit - sugarcubes
Freestyler - bomfunk mcs

I went for one of my favourite bands, regardless of country. I think they are awesome and everyone should know about them.

I was trying to think of that one the other day and was going to go for it. It was around the same time as DJ Spiller (who would have also qualified and I considered).

Contentious - does Bextor's influence soil its mainland Europe purity.
Also - wrong thread, but I'm now listening to Sylvia by Focus inspired by the pick above. Brilliant!!!

OK - I can see how mine could fall into the average category.
However, There is no conceivable, earthly reason why Hocus Pocus should only have gained 3 votes. It's insane

I just think of songs that either remind me of sitting outside a pub on a hot day, driving about with the windows down or being on the beach, simples!

Re: Music Cup Round 9 - Europe
I am actually still really stuck on mine, there's loads of possibilties but none that are really grabbing me, the one I wanted was nabbed by Hobo.
Re: Music Cup Round 9 - Europe
Still waiting on Nando & Legend's summer choices before the last round can go up.
Will reveal the scores shortly.

Re: Music Cup Round 9 - Europe
The scores heading into the last round are...
Hero Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger 10 69
Legend Abba - Does your Mother Know? 7 63
YI Man Rammstein - Fire frei! 7 61
Aberdeen Steve Rammstein - Ich Will 4 60
Davie Focus - Hocus Pocus 2 59
King Beer Abba - Waterloo 9 58
Fernando Rasmus - In the Shadows 5 52
Hobo Aha - Take On Me 9 51
Asdral225 Michael Schenker Group - Doctor Doctor 4 40
Electric Demon Phoenix – Everything is Everything 2 33
Although I have a 6 point lead heading into the final round it's still all to play for (especially as the choices as I was hoping on for this round have gone and I'm not happy with the one I've picked now)

Re: Music Cup Round 9 - Europe
Good on you though Demon for continuing to stick with songs you want rather than go for the crowd pleasers. Just a shame no-one else has your taste in music
Next time we’ll have an Manics round (in which you’ll still come last as you’ll pick some early B side while I’ll go for ‘If you tolerate this’ and clean up.

I gave him a Manchester round for this!
He picked Oasis in the one time he did pander for popular support!
Re: Music Cup Round 9 - Europe
Crikey I am still in the bottom three! I just hope that I can beat Fernando this last round to send him into the relegation zone!

I didn't pander for popular support.
The Smiths are probably tied for my favourite band of all time. Morrissey is my idol. But even though they've done vastly superior bodies of work to Oasis, in my opinion "Don't Look Back in Anger" is the best stand alone song ever to come out of Manchester.
You're right though - I would pick a bizarre Manics song that no-one would never have heard of, and would probably continue to never have heard of because they don't click the link
"Prologue to History" - that's the best Manics B-Side... if you were wondering like.

Re: Music Cup Round 9 - Europe
By the way, slightly off topic, but I was massively impressed by Lady Gaga on TV last night. That was one hell of a performance. And I've never been a fan of hers and was watching because there was nothing else on.
Pretty brave to combine 3 of your biggest hits into one small medley, then replace them with new, stripped back songs. But I think she proved that she's actually a pretty good musician and singer, rather than she just wears funny clothes.
I'm a convert.

I thought she was really good. She's an oddball though, really weird looking.

Re: Music Cup Round 9 - Europe
I saw a video of Gaga from many years back when she took part in a New York talent contest, she sat on a piano and belted out a song (though she still came 2nd!)
If you heard the audio alone you’d have thought it was Alicia Keys etc.

Re: Music Cup Round 9 - Europe
I think that's what a pop concert should be all about - she gave everything. And I was stunned by her ability to sing and dance so energetically at the same time. Most pop acts do simple dance routines embellished by the dancers around them - and have their mic turned down whilst they do them.
It is even more impressive when you consider it was just a mini-festival, not her own paying audience.

I disagree. I was a massive Oasis fan back then but I’d have had Live Forever by a country mile over anything from the 2nd album.
Re: Music Cup Round 9 - Europe
If you didnt get to see American Idol this week, she was the mentor on there.
She was excellent and really made 3 of the 4 left incredibly uncomfortable!
She had on what looked like 12 inch heels on too!

You probably would have got 10 points for doing so too.
