Ashes T2: Lords, Starc and Cowans dropped
First topic message reminder :
Harris and Khwaja in.
Aus's bowling depth is so good that they can drop who was rated to be their top fast bowler without blinking an eyelid.

Beautiful stuff from Swanny there, should Agar be worried about his 98 yet?

Gerry - to be fair, when he just has to pull or cut pace he does a reasonable impression, its when the spinners come on...

Tuffers batted for an hour?

350 up with another Swann heave to the boundary- not entirely controlled.
Looks like these two have orders to just attack and see how far they get.
Huge 6 from Broad! Boy this is fun!

would have been a difficult catch even if he had stayed on the boundary, it was just over the rope. Would have done well not to stand on the rope.

A 44 partnership already
Imagine if both these guys pass 50, what a series this is.

Still another hour 'til lunch. If these two can stick around we might be close to 400 by then.

No problems with these two trying to counter-attack. Both prefer to hit through the ball than to just block, and are as likely to make a mistake in defence. At least this way if it comes off for half an hour you add 40-50 runs (as they've done).

Swanny and Broad should now just settle down, they both are in, stay positive, but do nothing reckless.

Yes dummy_half it is the way this pair naturally bat. Better being out scoring runs than being out blocking.

If Australias top six can somehow get to 200, I think the batters can fight to 450

To be fair, that's a thin one and he has hit his pad too! I will let him off that one.
Well bowled Harris.
Important partnership at the end from Swann and Broad. Keeps us in the game.

a good little stand that. I dreamed for a minute they'd get to 400 but they did well.

Review here, Looked more of a tactical one but it doesn't work. So England bowled out for 361. Pattinson at last with a wicket, and Broad the last out for a very handy 33.

Broad's nicked behind, but he still reviews!
361 all out. A good total for England, one that any England fan would have taken at 11:01 this morning.
England on the up here, hopefully Anderson and Broad can extract early swing like the Australians did. 2 wickets before lunch would be superb.

A score of 361 then for England. A competitive score in my opinion. If the England attack click then Australia will struggle to surpass that total.

Re: The Ashes, Second Test Lord's
Oh, it could be all over!
Broad gets a nick behind...or the Aussies think so. England use their remaining review.
Its given out and England are 361 all out. Not quite as much as we were hoping for, but better than it could have been.

30 runs too many for Australi and 30 runs short of what they could have from England's POV.
shame their trundler picked for his batting as a bowler doesn't deliver when required.
Aus would be happier of the 2 sides at this point IMO

A stuart Broad with runs under his belt could be more dangerous with the ball, watch out Australia!.

Re: The Ashes, Second Test Lord's
Think 361 is a pretty handy total myself. Pitch has some pace and bounce and a little bit of turn, likely to reverse swing as well, and Australia have to bat last.
Really, to be ahead, the Aussies have to score around 450, which won't be easy.

Oops. Still, I said earlier I'd be happy with anything over 350, so job done. Now we get to put the Aussies under pressure before lunch

Just below par, but the Aussies aren't a good batting lineup. Better than it could've been
Pattinson doing a fine Finn impression in that innings

Re: The Ashes, Second Test Lord's
No problem with him reviewing - last wicket and we had a review in hand, so why not hope you get lucky with DRS?
Anyway, a useful last wicket stand takes us to a near-par total. we'll need in-roads with the new ball though, as it looks like there's 10-15 overs of life before batting gets a bit easier.
Great bowling from Harris and the surprise effectiveness of Smith - if you take their contributions away, the remaining Aussie bowlers won't be happy about either their economy or the threat they posed.

in some ways they would. England batted first and fell 30 short.
but it's 30, not 260 like was looking possible yesterday morning and the pitch has life so England won't be unhappy. Swan will have liked watching Smith profit.

Exactly! As someone else said, its not like they carry over into the 2nd innings, so you either use it or lose it.
And its not as if Australia wouldn't do exactly the same thing.

400 minimum needed. third innings will produce a lot more runs than fourth,
this game is 50/50 at this time.

30% draw
30% aus

Keeping a review in your pocket is pointless, it's like when you've been on holiday and you still have £50 of the currency in your pocket, why not spend it at the duty free rather than waste it?
Well done Broad, well done Swann, well done Jimmy. Bresnan has to bowl well else he'll get lynched by the nay-sayers.
