Good shots from agent smith but they are making it far too easy for him.

Time for him to get out.

Smith is quickly building the lead, stepping up the attack on the bowling.

Off you go Smith. Cheeky run and a deserved out. Great fielding. Maybe Clare's fault though.

Well they aren't going to bowl England out today are they ? So they may as well assume the rain will drift off to Ireland or something and get their lead up where they want it ...

I can't follow that weather map of GSC 's Smile  But I gather it is raining a bit . Somewhere . And presumably is heading for Old Trafford.

Smith run out...

Oooohhhh. Smith run-out for 18. Aus 133-5.

Clarke only wanted the single but Smith wanted two.

Lead 292 - surely enough for Clarke to declare?

Easy second run there. Smith's run nearly another 2 by himself

Think that was the skipper's mistake, running Smith out. They could have stretched it to 2 there. Perhaps Clarke's back is getting in the way of those very quick runs?

It's getting heavier yet the umpires will try to stick it out.

And off they go.

And you won't see more sun for the rest of this game.

Clarke has to declare and hope. No time for England to win, maybe 20 overs if they are luck to bowl England out in the game.

No, but they could certainly get 2-3 wickets, maybe put England under pressure to hold on. There have been a few wickets clattered towards the close of play this series.

Plus if the weather did veer away, it gives them all the more time to chase the win.

So the rain has arrived at last and the players are off. Think that has to be it for Australia in this innings. A lead of 296, unless the players could get back on the field in the next 15 minutes.

But if you were in Clarke's shoes and needed the win to keep the series alive...would you take the chance?

Even without the weather, time is starting to become a factor.

He has to declare soon. He has already wasted more time than he had. Well, he may have.

To be fair he can't assume the rain will happen and has to be sure there is no chance of an England win.

Michael Holding's anti-England bias is getting on my jubblies

If it's too slow the Aussies will complain or the umpires will step in.

Neither has happened yet.

So shut up

Oz unlucky with the weather. Really the first test could have gone either way, second all England, third would be Australia at a canter if they have all 5 days. Bearing in mind we are in England is there really much between the two sides ?
Also most of the wickets in Oz won't be too dissimilar to this Old Trafford one. Can't see a lot of joy for Anderson over there.

No very little between sides.

Have to fancy aussie to win them back this winter. They could yet win them here but who wins the toss likely wins the game with these two so depends on that and weather.

I think we have shown a lot of superiority tbh Diggs,

first test was random and we never start well- The whole 180 last wicket threw it in to the balance. but england still in control for 90% of the game.

the second game england won by a mile..One of the biggest wins for donkies

this game - well tbh looks pretty close..Even without the rain - there is no way I would back against the draw!! no way would it be aus in a canter(have you been watching!)- We have had no rain as yet and only a day and an hour or two left!!

aus are having to push the rate.. So its impossible to tell if its tough out there, also have to factor in englands bowling and a 500 is a pretty rare score for aus. This is the norm for them more than not in recent times

I have no idea how you can call this game close. Our bowling was completely impotent in the first innings, they declared for 7 Mysti, Cook would have batted to 650.
Sides do not make more than 350 to win tests , it just rarely happens and Oz could easily put England in with a session with three and a half sessions to go.
England are a better side, but not by much.

England are far ahead of Australia. You don't win by 300+ runs because "you're the better side, but not by much."

As for now, Clarke is simply wasting time, and what little hope Australia have.

I a wondering what he is doing now.

He obviously has learned not to trust uk wether forcasts and to put the game away but this system really is very likely to wash away tomorrow completely.

Maybe it won't and this is genius but if it does then this was silly.

How can you say that if it wasnt for rain(none has come!!) that they would win by a canter..

Its an odds on draw even with no rain!

the bcc's Vic Marks and his "if the light is good enough for aussie it is for England".. but that takes no note of the fact that aussie would bat with torches out now to get a bigger lead whereas eng will not play without optimal light.

Lead of 321 and still no declaration.

Bad light stops play.

Clarke had better pray the forecast of rain tomorrow is as accurate as previous ones, or he's thrown away any chance of winning this match.
