The 2013/14 SPFL Thread
First topic message reminder :
Don't know how many fans of Scottish Football are on here but thought I'd create a thread to keep it updated throughout the Season to keep anyone interested in the loop.
With rebranding of our game this is a thread to post or ask about certain teams results from the Scottish Premiership, Championship or League 1 & 2
I'm really looking forward to this season, with Play-Offs introduced between the Premiership and the Championship it really opens up competition at both the bottom of the Premiership and from mid table upward in thr Championship.
News that 7 of the 12 Premiership clubs have already posted higher season book sales than last season is encouraging, 3 clubs remain at the same level and only 2 have reported a deficit, one of those clubs is Dundee Utd who are at similar levels of an average top flight season, their season tickets spiked last year due to the return of the Tayside Derby
I think its safe to say Celtic will win the Premiership but I think the race for 2nd could be very interesting, I expect 3/4 clubs to be genuine contenders for that, the relegation battle will also be very interesting this year, Hearts thanks to Adminstration will start on -15 so they're favourites for the drop, especially considering how depleted their squad is but with the Relegation Play-Off spot introduced this season 2nd 3rd and possibly 4th bottom teams wont be entirely safe and Hearts despite being depleted still have a very decent core 13/14 players who if they stay fit could climb the league.
Similarly the Championship will be intriguing this year, Dundee have to be favourites, they've made some good signings, Morton lost their best player from last season in Tidser but with the Play-Offs now introduced they'll feel a top 4 finish is the least they'll aim for, Falkirk have a really talented group of boys but having sold Lyle Taylor to Sheffield Utd for £250k they'll need a goalscorer if they want to be contenders, I really like Livingstone, great little club, lovely stadium, excellent playing surface too, have brought through some very decent players in recent seasons, got some cracking boys there at the moment, finally Alloa for me will be worth the watching, Paul Hartley went there 2 years ago and they won the 3rd Division, last season they won the 2nd Division Play-Offs...Hartley has built a solid team that likes playing attack minded direct football, it'd be a major shock if Hartley leads Alloa to the Premiership but I'd not be overly shocked to see him lead his team to the Play-Offs.

Re: The 2013/14 SPFL Thread
Just watched the United highlights, 4 assists for Gould, unbelievable, he's got such a calm head on his shoulders, he does look the real deal, Celtic don't seem to be interested in signing from Scotland these days which is ridiculous, we spent £4.4m on Amido Baldè and Teemu Pukki when about £1.5m would have got them Johnny Russell and Leigh Griffiths.
I'd love them to go for Gould and Armstrong though, only if we made sure they played enough games, ideally though I hope Utd can hang onto them all for another 18 months, the Scottish Cup has to be a genuine goal this season if no-ones sold in January

Thats the 7th time in just 17 games that United have hit 4 or more goals, the most entertaining team in the country by a mile so far this season, spoke to a United fan this morning, said there was around 7k but felt like 10k with the atmosphere

Re: The 2013/14 SPFL Thread
Good result for united, not our best performance by a long way but between the cifci scandal and a dogged hearts side fighting for their lives nice to see the young lads churn our a result, hope ICT take a while longer sorting out their managerial situation, a few more results like that would do nicely
Got to feel for Motherwell It's been a hell of a week for them

I said a while ago I can see Motherwell miss out on the top 6, think it was on Pie n Bovril I mentioned it, I think ICT will have enough to finish in the top 6 now and I can see Hibs do enougj once Butcher's settled and can add a bit of pace to that team, Aberdeen & United shootout for me for the 2nd/3rd positions, the League looks stronger this season, some fine individual and team performances already.

I think for anyone between 2-7 that champions league spot is up for grabs (though I'm not as optimistic about Hibs as you are), from a personal point of view, I'm hoping for a New Firm battle for the 2nd spot, (with United coming out on top of course ), proof that there is entertainment to be found in Scottish Football if your willing to sit back and appreciate things place by place and game by game

Re: The 2013/14 SPFL Thread
Unbelievable, I was at the game today, my mrs stays in Cumnock and because of the weather a lot of public transport to Glasgow got called off last minute, its mostly Rangers down here so couldn't even hope to find a supporters bus, anyway its only 35 mins on the bus to Kilmarnock so I jumped down to watch that game while she was in her Salon...loved it, the fans are bouncing, this team with a few shrewed signings could challenged for honours over the next 18 months.
McNamara is doing a phenomenal job, its great to watch United against teams a level or two down from them, I tend to only see them live against Celtic but this team are insanely talented, has the feel of the influx Hibs had 10/11 years ago.
Heard at the game thats Kris Boyd's 29th goak vs United, some people don't get that many in a career.

It would be not much more than a sideways move for Gauld, Soutar or Armstrong to move to Celtic.
Players have far loftier ambitions these days, and it's almost better for them to get another 12 months of games under their belt at their current teams than join a team that "used" to be a big team but is now itself a feeder club to poor EPL teams and who is also going backwards in Europe due to diminishing investment.
The SPL is just a feeder leauge these days, and whilst they might improve their bank balance with a move to Celtic isn't really an aspirational move.
I'd say the same for the likes of Daly and Black joining the Rangers, nothing other than mercenary moves.
Surely these guys could get better quality football and equal pay in the Championship or League 1?

Re: The 2013/14 SPFL Thread
I think being successful with Celtic particularly in Europe will help players achieve moves to the Premiership where as being successful with another Scottish Premiership side might for the most part only attract Championship clubs.
I can see why non Celtic fans would see a move to Celtic as a side-ward step, I completely disagree but I can understand that logic, a move to Celtic offers players the opportunity to compete in the biggest tournament in World Football regularly, it also gives players a completely different perspective on how the games played, far more pressure to win, under more scrutiny from fans and media, also a lot of teams player more defensively against Celtic so it also pushes players to adapt their games in order to find more space...add to that most Scottish Footballers want to win their National League and National cup competitions then for many it's a non-brainer to move.
Celtic frustratingly for me have not bought from Scotland since signing Stokes in 2010, give me Johnny Russell and Leigh Griffiths over Teemu Pukki and Amido Baldè any day of the week and if we cash in on Joe Ledley in January I'll be keeping my fingers crossed Stuart Armstrong is his replacement.
Jon Daly and Ian Black's situations are nothing like the younger guys coming through in Scotland, both are experienced pro's who's best dayd are behind them, they sae an opportunity to sign the best contract of their lives that will probably see them retire comfortably in a few years time, with the injuries Daly has had and the constant worry over unpaid wages Black had while at Hearts they'd have been beyond foolish and negligent to their famlies if they didn't take up the contracts on offer.

He's one of many at United James...someone said they had a segment on Football Focus just dedicated to him so he's obviously caught the eye of some major players in England if FF are cutting Premier League time to discuss him.
Ryan Jack and Peter Pawlett at Aberdeen have been excellent too.

Pawlett has been on the scene for ages but hasn't really stepped up, he got sent on loan last season and he really started hitting the gym, he's filled out so much in the last year, he was always a speed machine but now he has more power and purpose to his game.
Stevie May at St Johnstone is a cracking propsect too

Re: The 2013/14 SPFL Thread
First post on here having lurked for ages, but I need some sort of outlet to rave about United! Phenomenal performances recently and it's really a joy to watch the attacking talent on show. My only worry is that we're such a young side there's bound to be periods of inconsistency. Can see it being between Aberdeen and United for third.

Re: The 2013/14 SPFL Thread
Don't want to be accused of being a fan who only comes on here to gloat, but a combination of being Christmas-ed, worked and stag do-ed off my jubblies means I haven't been on here as much as I would like
Have to say it's been 3 disappointing results on the bounce, haven't made any of the games (gutted to miss today's despite the result) but the oracle of all things united, my missus' brother tells me that in 2 of the games at least (Saints was an off day), United have still been doing a lot of the right things and are still looking dangerous, got to hope the young lads keep there heads up and the results will follow.
Bit of a bump back to earth after such a fantastic run, but if you told me at the start of the season United would be 5th and still in the running for Europe I'd have bitten your hand off, Hibs next, as good a chance for 3 points as we'll get in the near future, so here's hoping
The future's bright, the future's tangerine

They like most other clubs announce tickets sold rather than bums on seats Rino, if you try to buy a ticket for the theatre and your told its sold it then it'll still be billed as "sold out" regardless if wee Johnny from row G seat 11 decides to go or not.
My best mates got a season ticket for Ibrox and he tells me exactly the same thing happens over there, I've wached Arsenal/Man Utd/Newcastle games TV and despite it looking obviously patchy in areas they still count tickets sold

Re: The 2013/14 SPFL Thread
I think Lyle Taylor moving to Partick Thistle for the rest of the season could be a good move, he looked excellent last year with Falkirk and especially looked capable when playing SPL sides, Sheffield United signed him for £250k in the Summer which is a significant amount for a First Division side, I'm hoping that he does enough to secure a move back to Scotland with a Premiership side or possibly a big team who'll be in the Championship next season like Rangers or Hearts

Micheal Tidser moving to Ross County could be a cracking signing, know him well, mates with my younger cousin, was the star of the Morton side that almost won the First Division last year, never worked put for him down south but really looking forward to seeing what he can do in thePremiership with County

Dundee Utd are expecting Everton to make a £1.2m bid for Andrew Robertson, United saying they don't need to sell and McNamara saying Robertson wants to stay and learn his trade.

Re: The 2013/14 SPFL Thread
£1.2mil on Robertson is a joke, I'm aware that SPFL clubs tend to get undercut but if Robertson was showing this sort of form down south, we could be looking at £6 mil easily.
Do Aberdeen want any more of our players?
I haven't seen massive amounts of Watt, could that be a good move for United if it came off?

He's been training with the squad for the last week, I heard he might have been signing for Hearts if they where allowed to bring anyone in, also doing the rounds were Levein was going back to Hearts in the summer and Kenneth was going to be his first signing, all just speculation

Re: The 2013/14 SPFL Thread
I think United have been so brilliant that a poor run is always going to be hard to take, originally I didn't fancy United to make the top 6 just because their youngsters were so inexperienced, thankfully it looks like thats not the case but possibly challenging for second is a stretch to far this time around, still, the Scottish Cup is still their for the taking and a high league finish, down turn in fortune and confidence at the moment but overall there is loads of positives.

Re: The 2013/14 SPFL Thread
Chuffed with the result last night, what a goal from Jonny Hayes to finish Forster's clean sheet record! Cant believe Lennon is saying it wasn't a red card for Van Dijk, red card all day long.
Celtic played well with 10 men and Flood and Robson lost the midfield in second half so we were pinned in. Glad we took the unbeaten record though.

Re: The 2013/14 SPFL Thread
Lennon's an idiot, the ref got every yellow or red card decision right, Van Dijk was last man amd it was also a pretty nasty challenge, I don't think he tried to hurt Pawlett but he still caught him hard and late, Leigh Griffiths was also deservedly booked, he was rash and probably a bit frustrated, Ambrose got a booking too and again it was deserved, the Aberdeen boy was away from him so it was a good foul.
maybe it was a penalty, it probably was, the same ref didn't give Aberdeen a penalty tho against Hibs for something similar so at least he is consistant in those situations, Johnny Hayes goal was fitting to win any match, if a record is gonna go thats the way to kill it.
thought Celtic with 10 men were brilliant second half, was surprised we managed to pin the Dons back, Biton for me was the best player on the park for his all round game, gutted to lose as always but Aberdeen are on the march so its not a big surprise, great atmosphere, love Celtic up at Pittodrie under the lights.
congrats on a good win

Agree with all what you said, I was disappointed with how we played the second half but chuffed to win.
First time I had really seen Biton. Totally agree he was best player on park, looks an excellent player.
