Scotland's new kit - grand reveal at noon
First topic message reminder :
Well today's the day ladies and gentlemen, Scotland's new home and away kits are going to be released, time to find out what Macron are really like. So figured we'll need a thread where we can come over all Gok Wang and critically asses the stylistic merits...
From the teaser images the SRU have shared on twitter we know that the home kit is the standard dark blue / navy and similarly the away is the traditional white. The latter is a relief as I'd had nightmares that Macro might have tried to copy the orange monstrosity from 1999 http://www.talksport.co.uk/sites/default/files/imagecache/ts_magazine_big_picture/51501216.jpg
So hopefully the new kits will be decent and won't feature fools gold trim as was the case with our last home strip or neon yellow and red sleeves http://www.rbs6nations.com/images/galleries/73410834.jpg
If Macron produce something like the 2006 shirt or the 2010 shirt I'll be very happy...

I am pleasantly surprised, this is the nicest kit we've had since... I don't even know when! Since before they got rid of the old cotton jerseys anyway! It's definitely the crap strips that have been holding us back, grand slam here we come!

What do you call them then GC? Purple thistles with a big Tinkywinky on the end?

I think they look great. All they need to do is eliminate this stupid stretchy fabric which makes it hard to scrummage properly and improve the collar. Let's say they make the jersey out of tough cotton with a little leeway around the waist for the props. Then we have an ultimate winner.
Otherwise they still look good, but........

I loved the last Canterbury top, but this new one looks good too. Reminds me of my first Scotland top given to me as a small child (except it has sponsors logo's all over it). Could be a lot lot worse.

Re: Scotland's new kit - grand reveal at noon
Just had a look on the SRU website and seen the prices for the new top
The home replica shirt, the main one intended for fans costs a whopping £60! Now it's been a few years since I last bought a top, but I thought the replica fan one always retailed at £50. A 20% increase, especially in these tough times seems rather over the top.

Re: Scotland's new kit - grand reveal at noon
Tis a lot pennies Graham but unforunately the £80/£60 options are exactly the same price points as Canterbury is producing now. Identical to those on the Leicester Tigers and England website for their new season's kit.
I always end up with something in their leisure range anyway rathern than an actual national shirt. That, plus plenty of Glasgow kit.

Re: Scotland's new kit - grand reveal at noon
Actually the more I think about this the more it really pees me off. £80 for a Macron rugby top?? Even the £60 version is a hell of a lot of money.
It just beggars belief that someone from the SRU went to a meeting with Macron where they said “we would like to sell your top for £80” and the SRU guy said “yes, that sounds like a good idea!”
I’m not marketing expert but surely £60 and £40 for the two alternatives would completely outsell the £80 / £60 versions – probably making more money, and meaning that there are more total shirts sold so the sponsors are happy.
Really can’t believe it someone thought £80 was a good idea. Or do I just not understand marketing??

What would you do if you were in charge of it Risky? Am I right in thinking that cheaper shirts would mean more tops sold, probably more money made in the long term and happier sponsors?

Re: Scotland's new kit - grand reveal at noon
Top of my head
I would have three shirts
1 - the professional top, but on limited run - at £80 - £100. Each one with an individual production run number and part of an exclusive group. If you are paying that much, then you want it to be special and one that not everyone will have - potential that if you buy this you get a membership to a club, and get options on early tickets, emails etc
2 - Core fans top - this is the mass, good quality top that fans will buy, wear to matches, and generally use most - pitch it at a price point that will make it move - £30. Get the brand out there, increase numbers, have people feel they can afford to give it to kids, friends etc as presents - make sure it is beer proof - (not figure hugging)
3 - Cheap as chips - this is the 't-shirt' version - looks good, but a t-shirt - can be used on hot days - doing the BBQ etc. While looks good and will not look out of place at the ground, will more likely be for the occasional fans. Will also be priced to stop knock offs being sold which helps no-one

Macron have paid a shedload to get the shirt rights and need to recoup the money somehow. Simples, unfortunately. Canterbury are also no saints in this respect. Wouldn't know how much an UnderArmour test Welsh shirt or a Puma Irish test shirt is for comparison purposes.RDW_Scotland wrote:Actually the more I think about this the more it really pees me off. £80 for a Macron rugby top?? How much is a top end Rangers or Celtic top? That's probably a better comparison.

Be that as it may, it doesn't make much sense to me to out-price a large proportion of the target market (students, skint grads like me, families, regular punters, people whose daddies don’t own half of Berkshire).
Also with regards to football tops, yes they probably are comparable but that doesn’t make it right. Could it not be an opportunity to provide a cheaper – yet high quality – alternative so fans of both sports might chose the Scotland rugby top over a Celtic shirt that looks identical to the last one?

Re: Scotland's new kit - grand reveal at noon
RDW - isn't that what the leisure range is for? I'm not suggesting that these prices are justified but obviously it is deemed by some bean counter that the market supports shirts at that price point. It's like the old pharmaceutical argument: the second pill cost tuppence to make, the first pill cost £150 million. I have no doubt that all of the tech that allegedly does into these pro shirts makes them much more 'clever' than my old 1990 shirt. It's just that (your point) this is not the reason that I buy it.
I guess I just always prefer regular t-shirts or micro fleeces from their range. It doesn't have to be the actual national shirt for me. Although I appreciate that if you have young kids, it kind of has to be what they see the players wearing for them.

Well at £60 / £80, I'll be sticking with my 2008 shirt. Grown to love those weird bits of mesh on it. And despite getting it when I was 14, still a decent fit.

Re: Scotland's new kit - grand reveal at noon
Or maybe it's just time to buy some new jeans RDW. If you bought them at the same time as Glove bought his jersey, it's unrealistic to think they'll still fit.
I need to invest in a new NZ jersey. The colour on my old one, actually given to me by a Scottish mate, has faded to the extent that it looks like an AB jersey as in A Brownish jersey. 85 euros the new one which blessedly does not have AIG over it. I will invest in it eventually but the price does not sit well with me.
That said, at least you have a shirt you're happy with. Some of the options in the OP were truly hideous.

Really nice shirt, how refreshing to see a manufacturer not go for a gimmick stlye and actually get the kit 'right'. Is this going to be the kit you wear in the '15 WC?

£80 seems steep to me, and I very much doubt I'll get the benefit of the imbedded "technology" in the material, unless it somehow deals with beer spillage and misc. stains.....

Was at the Millennium stadium for a tour last week and the Wales under armour tops were selling at £84 in the WRU shop.
Definitely agree with the comments by risky and the others about the prices and marketing strategy. Seems over priced and will
put people off buying it. The marketing dept at the SRU definitely seem to be out of touch on many areas with the public!

Is the shirt £80 or £60? on the SRU shop and in Greaves Sports its £60 for the replica home shirt which is the same price as they usally are.
Another good thing is you can buy it without the RBS on it which is cheaper. Can't see anything for £80
Ah right noticed the pro jersey £80, doesn't really bother me couldn't fit into the tighter one even if I had a team of folk to help me.

Best close up pictures of the most recent Scotland stuff (not the away shirt or training tops yet though) is on the Lovells website:
http://www.lovell-rugby.co.uk/shop/International/Scotland
Open the pictures so that they're at their largest - lots of detailed contrast styling on the leisure stuff.
Am liking the Macron approach very much. Hopefully they will do the two pro teams proud as well.

Ah, it may look cheap, but at least you have the satisfaction on knowing how expensive it is, and the consolation that the kidney you sold to pay for it went to a worthy cause....
I'm staggered by the £80 prices, and not much happier paying £60 if I'm being honest. Still, someone has to pay for all those top signings.....
