Immersed or Disinterested: 5 Films you loved and 5 Films you loathed Empty Immersed or Disinterested: 5 Films you loved and 5 Films you loathed

Post by Guest Sat 17 Aug 2013, 6:14 pm

Sometimes if a film is interesting enough you can become completely engrossed in it.  It could be an action film, a drama or even a cartoon.  You begin to care for the characters and you want to know how the adventure will finally pan out.  On the flipside, you can sometimes find yourself become increasingly disinterested with a film and the protagonists of the story.

Here are 5 films I became immersed in:

1. 12 Angry Men - Drama at its very best.

2. Raiders of the Lost Ark - A classic adventure.

3. Ghandi - A tale of passive resistance in the face of adversity.

4. The Rock - A belter of a film with a great soundtrack.

5. Tangled - Favourite Disney by a country mile.

Here are 5 films which I became disinterested in:

1. Crank - I like Statham but not in this.

2. Children of Men - I don't stay awake long enough to comment on this film.

3. The Bourne Legacy - Seems like Matt jumped ship.  I can see why.

4. The Break-Up - A film that had no identity.  Was it supposed to be a comedy?  I don't know.

5. The Phantom Menace - Crying or Very sad

What are your picks?

Loved
Raging Bull
Inception
The Prestige
Tropic Thunder
Rocky III - Mr. T gave a Transcendent performance. Given that Downey jr. got a Oscar nomination for Tropic Thunder, it probably should have been up there.

Cant really think of films that I absolutely hate, but I think.
1) A Clockwork Orange - I hate every single person who ever referred this to me.
2) Rocky V - In the words of ardent Rocky fans "Rocky V never happened"
3) The Bourne series - could never really get into the series. Dont think Ive ever finished it
4) Good Luck Chuck - Meh
5) Superman III - I generally dont care for Superman, but this was particularly bad

Loved:

1) American Graffiti
2) Cinderella Man
3) The Untouchables
4) End of Watch
5) Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Loathed

1) Hall Pass (utter dirge from Owen Wilson with no real point to any of it)
2) After Earth (A vehicle from Mom & Dad to showcase Smithy's Junior's lack of acting ability)
3) Speed 2 (Poor Sandra Bullock. Obviously was contracted to do the 2nd & couldn't get out of it. One of the most ridiculously painful sequels ever made. Terriblt script, terrible acting, terrible everything)
4) Judge Dredd (the Sly Stallone one - so far away from the comic books it is unforgiveable. I read 2000AD growing up. This was not it.)
5) Snakes on a Plane (Doesn'tr even fall into the "So bad it's good" category. 1 1/2 hours of pointless garbage.)

the last temptation of christ

Disinterested
shutter island
the departed

Any chance you could narrow it down even further to films containing the right letters to make the word "Flaps"?

Galted is fast becoming my favourite poster (but I'm sure, given the trend for bandwagon jumping and hype train hopping, I'll forget all about him when when some other sparky new poster bursts onto the scene)

Oh f**k, I've been noticed by the 667Killer.

flaps (immersed)
monty python and the search for the holy grail
le fabuleus destin d'amelie poulain

flaps (disinterested)
plan 9 from outer space
police academy 2: their first assignment
mongol: the rise to power of genghis khan
pirates of the caribbean: the curse of the black pearl

I regret that I was unable to come up with 5 of each, I blame Tino for this.  Perhaps you'd like to pay him a visit.  He's very rich.

Back off Galted.

I don't want Dave coming anywhere near me.  The thought of a meeting a slightly rotund, balding Yorkshireman wearing tight leather trousers and a ripped SLAYER t-shirt scares the sh*t out of me.

Galted you have fine taste in Scorsese films. Pretty much mirrors my own. Would add Mean Streets to the engrossed list and Kundun to the disinterested list.

Reminds me have got New York New York at home I am yet to watch. Must get round to that soon.

A relief to know there's someone with impeccable taste on the boards, Rowley.  Have to confess that, not only have I not seen Mean Streets, but I haven't seen Raging Bull or Cape Fear either, bought them all years ago but have been gathering dust on a shelf in my room.

Raging Bull is overrated, and I say that as a boxing fan. Never quite got the hype with it.

Cape Fear is good but the original with Robert Mitchum is better. Mitchum is one mean character.

Raging Bull is excellent, Cape Fear is a bit take or leave for me. Love Mean Streets though, is like a grubby version of Goodfellas. There is a bit in the book Wiseguy which Goodfellas was based on where Henry Hill and the guys drag Paulie along to watch Mean Streets as it blew them away as it was such an accurate portrayal of the life they lived.

Have you seen the original Cape Fear with Mitchum, Jeff? Far superior to the De Niro version.

I have Tina, agree 100%. Love Scorsese dearly but wish he would leave some of the old films alone. Did we really need a Hustler sequel, particularly one with Tom Cruise in it?

I got totally immersed in Goodfellows; got caught from the opening "All I ever wanted to be was a gangster" right through to the look of abject failure at the end. Reservoir dogs is another.

Recently it has to be the Hobbit that turned me off. Too many added scenes and the best part of the book, the riddles with Gollum, truncated to nothing. I was left hoping that the Eagles would be late.

Bringing Out the Dead or something along those lines Super, agree that one can definitely be added to the disinterested list. Had completely forgotten it even existed, which is about as bad a review as you're likely to get.

AZZY,

You didn't like anything Nolan did after "Batman Begins"

You don't like "Ocean's 12"

You don't like the follow-up's to "Lord of the Rings - Fellowship..."

Perhaps you just have a really poor attention span!

I never said I didn't like anything after Batman Begins, I said they weren't as good.

Ocean's 12 lays claim to the worst film I've ever seen.

Two Towers was mullered by the ents, even the exceptional Battle of Helms Deep couldn't rescue the film for me.

Return of the King was an hour too long, and full of cringe.

The Hobbit was a disaster. So embarrassing.

I just hate lazy films is all.

Technically speaking, you are not really dis-interested then. It has provoked a reaction; just not the reaction they were hoping for!!

I'm lucky that I have never watched Ocean 12 (or any of the ocean films for that matter) but I have watched the Hobbit twice and would prefer to burn out my retinas before watching it again! Unfortunately my nine year old is, well nine years old, so thinks it is wonderful.

I'm not quite sure why everyone's picking on the Hobbit. Thought it was quite fun myself, never felt like it was dragging on too much. Yes there was a bit of silliness, but that's part of the spirit of the book itself. What exactly did you people dislike about it?

Location : Your knuckles whiten on the wheel. The last thing that Julius will feel, your final flight can't be delayed. No earth just sky it's so serene, your pink fat lips let go a scream. You fry and melt, I love the scene.

My problem with the Hobbit is that it added too many things to a perfectly serviceable story, made it too action orientated and reduced the best and most important part of the book (the riddle competition) down to an add-on.

Immersed:
In Bruges. It's the combination of dialogue, character development, plot and the beautiful cinematography. Captivating film.

The Sting. To my mind, the best film ever made.

Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. I don't care what anyone says, I will never be able to watch this film too many times!

The Woodsman. Really thought provoking.

Pan's Labyrinth. Just unlike any other film I've ever seen. Beautiful and intelligent.

Disinterested:
Righteous Kill. It starred Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, and should have at least been as good as Heat (which itself wasn't as good as it should have been). It wasn't. It is without doubt the most boring film I've ever seen. So slow, so bland.

Anything by M Night Shyamalalalalan. Not only do they have plot holes that you could drive a bus through, but they also lack a sense of irony that might redeem the implausible storylines.
