Exeter Chiefs 26 - 29 Glasgow
Saturday, 31 August, 2013 - 15:00 | Sandy Park
The Warriors final pre-season game at Sandy Park was an entertaining affair with Byron McGuigan scoring a brace and Mark Bennett and Alex Dunbar also touching down as the visitors beat their Henineken Cup opponents 29-26.
The home side had the early possesion and were first to make their mark with a penalty by Gareth Steenson after just 2 minutes.
The Warrios hit back straight away going up the other end of the pitch and winning a penalty of their own, which Scott Wight converted to make it 3-3.
The Chiefs edged ahead again with another Steenson penalty after eight minutes but after a yellow card to Brett Sturgess the Warriors were in the ascendancy and went ahead for the first time nine minutes later.
After lovely build-up play and a lucky bounce Alex Dunbar put Byron McGuigan in for his third try in three games.
The game was a physical affair with the Chiefs occasionaly chipping over the Warriors defence as they looked for a way through.
After 25 minutes the Chiefs went closest to scoring in the first half but Glasgow held the ball up over their line, although the referee took play back for an earlier infringement and Steenson made it 9-8.
Fraser Brown and Moray Low were then replaced on the half hour mark by Pat MacArthur and Jerry Yanuyanutawa for his first Warriors appearance.
And the Fijian prop gave away a penalty shortly after coming on for his debut. Steenson missed this time so the score remained 9-8.
With half-time fast approaching McGuigan scored his second try of the game and Scott Wight converted to make it 15-9 at the break.
On 50 minutes Alex Dunbar scored the third Warriors try under the posts, which Wight converted but after Henry Pyrgos was shown a yellow card the home side began to get more possession and from the resulting penalty Steenson made it 12-22.
Chris Cusiter immediately came on at scrum-half with Sean Lamont making way and it was the Scotland internationals first appearance in a Warriors shirt for 11 months.
The Chiefs made their one man advantage count with a try by Tom James, which Steenson converted to make it 22-19 and once the vistitors were back up to 15 men on the pitch James Eddie broke and put Mark Bennett in under the posts. Substitute Finn Russell converted to make it 19-29 with just eight minutes remaining.
The hosts managed a late score after the clock had gone red with Tom James getting his second of the match which Steenson converted to make it 26-29.

Nasty. Almost certainly some concussion time on the sidelines. That must have been a very good Tigers side if Ulster couldn't get to within 20 points.wales606 wrote:Toby Flood injured playing against Ulster

Re: preseason/freindly results and form
GC,
The starting lineup was very strong, missing only Ayerza, YoungsB, Manu & Tait from a full strength team. Most of the team was replaced by the second half and a lot more of the kids then got a run out.
Ulster lineup was stronger than we had expected, but even so much further away from a full strength XV

Re: preseason/freindly results and form
Impossible to bet against Tigers this year, LT. Not common that a championship side is at least as strong, if not stronger in every area than the one that was successful last, but that's where they are. Now all everyone else needs is for Cockers to keep his yapper shut and let his side get on with business.LondonTiger wrote:GC,

Re: preseason/freindly results and form
Has been an interesting pre-season for us at London Irish. Against Wasps and Munster there have been positives and negatives.
Friday night at Munster we lost 27-13, but were 13-8 up with 8 minutes to go. Overall we played well but faded badly in the final 10 minutes. There is some question as to whether this was due to mass changes in personnel or an issue with conditioning. I certainly felt last season that we ran out of steam a lot, and I wonder whether we have that aspect right yet.
Nervous but excited for the LDH now.

Ozzy3123 we'll see from the first LDH game which pre season warm up is more effective - weaker opposition or stronger opposition.Ozzy3213 wrote:Has been an interesting pre-season for us at London Irish. Against Wasps and Munster there have been positives and negatives.

London Irish as you say have obviously been getting warmed up well vs tough opposition like Wasps and Munster.
In contrast Saracens have played two championship sides - Cornish Pirates and Bedford plus some not well known side in South Africa whose name escapes me.
I do find it strange that both Leicester and Exeter have played a pre season warm up against their HC rivals - Ulster and Glasgow respectively. Is this part of a grand master plan?

Re: preseason/freindly results and form
We've played Bath (which is our opener in the AP), which is very strange.
Hard to tell too much from friendlies, I'm hoping so anyway because reading the reports we didn't play too well against Edinburgh.

Re: preseason/freindly results and form
In Exe's case, pre-season friendlies tend to get lined up some time in advance, and often for a couple of years, with one fixture a home fixture, and the following year's an away fixture, or vice-versa. So we played Glasgow last summer in Ayr, and it was their turn to visit Sandy Park, all arranged long before the Heino draw too placebeshocked wrote:Ozzy3123 we'll see from the first LDH game which pre season warm up is more effective - weaker opposition or stronger opposition.Ozzy3213 wrote:Has been an interesting pre-season for us at London Irish. Re: preseason/freindly results and form
Glaws had this too with Munster. In previous years we've cancelled games when this has happened, but for some reason not this year; although given the sides both teams put out, it will be most likely that 2 very different teams face each other in the HC!beshocked wrote:Ozzy3123 we'll see from the first LDH game which pre season warm up is more effective - weaker opposition or stronger opposition.Ozzy3213 wrote:Has been an interesting pre-season for us at London Irish. Re: preseason/freindly results and form
Leicester's pre-season matches were arranged well before the Euro draw. That we then proceeded to be drawn with both Montpelier and Ulster was an interesting co-incidence.
