Summary:
- Nadal has a shot at claiming the no.1 spot at the US Open and ending Djokovic's long reign atop the rankings. As a minimum Nadal must reach the final. If Djokovic reaches the QF then Rafa must win the title. If Djokovic reaches the final then he will end Nadal's chances, for the time being.
- Wawrinka and Gasquet have done a great job to reach the SF, but will still gain no places as things stand. Reaching the final would move them above Tsonga, and winning the title would squeeze either of them just above Del Potro.

Points Spy up
Are we going to see a Rafa back at no.1 at the end of the fortnight? ... Based on current form I'm not sure I would bet against him...

Re: Points Spy - US Open
First big casualty of the tournament then, Del Potro out to Hewitt! ... DP tied on points with Federer, but Roger ranks ahead by virtue of earning more points in slams and Masters events.
Every time I think Hewitt must be getting ready to retire soon he goes and pulls out a big result! ... Maybe he's just trying to hang on until Federer leaves so they can have a joint retirement party...
Changing the subject, we're down the the last 32, and 28 of them are in the top 100 which I monitor. Still 4 players remaining who are ranked outside T100. Those 4 are:
Evgeny Donskoy [RUS] (102)
Tim Smyczek [USA] (109)
Mikhail Kukushin [KAZ] (172)
Dan Evans [GBR] (179)
... making Dan Evans the lowest ranked player left in the tournament! What a month he's having. His points total stands at 269... 120 of those are from two 60pt Challenger finals this month. And now he's going to pick up at least another 70pts from the USO (25 for qualifying, 45 for R32). Still quite a long way from the ~550pts he needs to break the top 100, but another win over Robredo and he'll be well on his way.

1:41am was far too early for me to go to bed. I usually hit the sack about 3am! The joys of working at home...
Anyways... down to the last 16 so I've added all remaining players onto the table. Here is their maximum ranking for reaching the remaining rounds. (Not guaranteed. Assumes rivals lose in current round)

Re: Points Spy - US Open
So does that mean if Ferru reaches the semis, he's number 3 regardless of what Murray does?

I think Murray remains No.3 if he also reaches the semis. In short Ferrer must go one stage further than Murray to become No.3.

The 'live' table in the lead post is probably more informative - as it stands Andy has just over 200 points more that Daveed at the same point in the tournament.CaledonianCraig wrote:I think Murray remains No.3 if he also reaches the semis. Hypothetically, if Andy loses this round and Ferrer in the last 8, Andy keeps #3 by a few points, but from the next round will have to at least match Ferrer's performance to stay ahead in the rankings. You'd normally expect him to manage that at the USO, but the prospective QF against Berdych does worry me a bit.

Re: Points Spy - US Open
Interesting that Andy could hold a Slam and be at No.4!!!! Shows what a poor clay court season a missed slam and poorish Masters results can do
Mind you David having a battle with Tipsy
Interesting to see that despite Del Po's early exit - he's a cert for the O2 and there appears to be only one place up for grabs and it's unlikely there will be any new names

Strong showings from gasquet, stan or raonic could knock tsonga off that 8th spot.

Would require one of them to reach the final...LuvSports! wrote:Strong showings from gasquet, stan or raonic could knock tsonga off that 8th spot.
Not impossible, but are we really expecting anyone other than Nadal in one half, and one of Djokovic or Murray in the other?
I could see Berdych upsetting Murray. His game always seems to cause Murray some problems. But if he does that, I can't see him getting past Djokovic. If Murray and Djokovic do meet, I'd probably give Murray the slight mental edge taking into account last years USO, and the recent Wimby.

Re: Points Spy - US Open
I have a question. Just checked on the ATP site and Nadal's 150 points for getting to the final of Vina del Mar are non countable. Why is this? It's not like he's played too many tournaments. In fact he only has one other 250 tournament listed. If the 150 points were included he would be number 1 in the rankings.

Re: Points Spy - US Open
^ still not sure. Do you know maybe you could explain. It can't be because he was given a zero pointer for not playing a 500 event after the US Open last year can it?

Re: Points Spy - US Open
Spot on. Counting the zero pointers he already has the maximum of 6 500 or lower results included (Monte Carlo counts as a 500).
