Paint filling your clubs
Has anyone had a go at paint filling their clubs? The numbers on my irons are losing their black paint finish already. Have looked at a couple of youtube vids and it seems quite straightforward. Does anyone have any advice or experience they can share?

Barra, I re-did a whole set, replacing the ferrules with white ones and using paint remover to remove all the old paint, then refilled with 4-5 coats of a brighter model enamel paint.
Looked amazing, but I use a different set now. I wouldn't recommended doing it on parts of clubs that were surrounded by slightly rough metal like you might get in some cavity areas though as the pain tends to discolour the metal a bit and is hard to wipe off, only smooth areas like the clube name/number.
I just apply a coat, wipe off excess, wait a while, do another coat etc.

What did you find to be the best method for removing the old paint?
Assume the old humbrol enamel paint used for airfix kits is as good as any? Also acrylic seems to get lots of votes. Easy to tidy up with acetone.

Re: Paint filling your clubs
Standard paint remover you get from B&Q, Nitromors or something similar, you hardly need any though, just brush it on very lightly and leave for half an hour and it should literally wash out.
Humbrol is ideal, because the numbers and name are generally recessed into the metal, stamped in, you can just paint over the whole area and then wipe off the excess, leaving all the paint in the stamped cavity.
*Paint remover will damage a lacquered clubs finish, and potentially damage some plastic/rubber insets so be careful.

Really? I'm surprised you are bothered about something so cosmetic which you can't even see at address.
Why don't you paint some go faster stripes on them too. That adds 10 yards distance (surely Taylormade will claim this soon)!

Re: Paint filling your clubs
i don't know why it bothers me ray - the geeky part of me also wants to paint the numbers red just for a change...
my irons have a slight satin finish (rather than chrome) s_r, in that case do you think it might be worth avoiding the paint remover and just painting over the existing paint? got a couple of old vokey's i'll have a go with first to see how it goes.

Yeah, you could probably just paint over it, don't think it would damage the club though.

You could change the colour, make them look a bit different.

Re: Paint filling your clubs
i've red VDR grips on them so thought i'd go for red numbers too. perhaps do the 712 on the hosel too. not sure about the titleist logo - the cavity backs have a rougher finish around the logo and i wouldn't want the paint to leave a slight hue. tbh, the numbers are really the only bit fading and 'needing' attention so will probably just do them to start. might have a bit more fun with the vokeys though

Re: Paint filling your clubs
barra, small tip is you can surround the rougher finish with wax so the paint doesn't go onto it. Then chip it off. when you're done.
You can get new ferrules off ebay too, easy to put on too.

**nerd alert**
re-filled the numbers on my irons as planned and gave the vokeys the full treatment. used them for 3-4 rounds no sign of wear yet. quite pleased with the results, though i've had mixed reactions from my playing partners...

I did it with a full set of blades in all the writing, changed the ferrules to match as well. Looked the business.
