Power punchers and chins
It seems to me that most power punchers have dodgy chins. I can only thing of Tyson and Foreman who had solid chins and recently it seems as if GGG has cement implanted in his chin.
Hearns and Benn are two power punchers who have weak chins. I'll ignore Price and probably Wilder.
Anyone else of either?

Shavers, Liston, Tua, Michael Spinks, Rosario, Gomez, Hilton could all take a shot

Langford could take a pretty good shot and was a fearsome puncher. You don't spot an opponent 30 odd pound and six inches in height without having a set of whiskers

I don't count Froch as a power puncher. A hard puncher, yes. But I've never seen him lay someone out with one shot. He's more of an accumulation/bludgeon you type of guy.

Smokin Joe had a decent chin and Matthew Saad Muhammad both could bang.

Edwin Valero could take a punch.
Joe Frazier, GGG and Tyson.
My knowledge of pre 90's boxing is limited so going off videos/user input.

So in conclusion, 'most' power punchers in fact do not have dodgy chins.

Why don't you name all the power punchers that existed and debate if they had Price chins or not.

Re: Power punchers and chins
Was Benn's chin all that dodgy? His biggest issue was that he struggled to avoid punches and tended to block them with his face. It usually took a hell of a punch to knock him over and he showed more than decent powers of recovery on more than one occasion.

Was Holy a power puncher? Also JD needed a few punches to put the guy away. Big puncher though.hogey wrote:Dempsey, Ray Robinson, Jeffries, Holyfield (at cruiser) the list is endless.

At Cruiser i would say Holy had big power, Dempsey could certainly hit. Even the best punchers sometimes needs to land a few to put someone away Tyson and Foreman usually done their damage with a volley of shots rather than just one.

Bob Foster was a devestating puncher at light heavy but his chin was not up to the heavyweights.
Ali slapped him.....and he went down.

To be fair to him thats only been proven once in his career against Thompson a very early fight. His stamina is more of an issue imo.azania wrote:Haye is a chinny power puncher

Re: Power punchers and chins
Never heard of shavers having a great chin before.
There is zero Correlation between a guys punch power and his chin. The reason why the subject of punchers living by the sword and dying by it crops up is that the big bomb throwers regularly leave themselves wide open to a counter. They get hit more frequently and when at their most vulnerable. Not much of a mystery really.

Watch his uppercut against Brain Magee....and that fight was in the balance up until that punch. Absolute clinker, knocked sparkers.Boxtthis wrote:I don't count Froch as a power puncher. Naz had a decent chin from memory. Milky is correct though, its an arbitrary list.

Re: Power punchers and chins
In the words of Evander Holyfield "those big punchers can't take no pain".
There have been a number of vulnerable power punchers who have generally been boxing's most exciting performers (think Hearns at middleweight, JuanMa Lopez, Arturo Gatti in his original guise, Julian Jackson, Wayne Alexander, Nigel Benn, Tommy Morrison, Frank Bruno, Randall Bailey).
There are also the fighters who fall in love with their own power, neglecting their boxing to the extent they fold once someone hits them back (David Price recently, the second coming of Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis prior to Manny Steward, Gerald McClellan etc.).
I don't think there's a physical connection to be fair.

Shane Mosely deserves a mention. He packed a serious whollop in his hayday and has one of the best chins in recent times.
Apologies if he has already been mentioned, cant be assed to read all the comments.

Re: Power punchers and chins
Shannon Briggs was a bit of a one-punch wonder, but had a chin that was perhaps not quite so tough...

Really? Briggs had a questionable chin back in the day? Vitali nearly punched his face off and he kept on going. And that was as an old man.

Agreed, Lewis in his prime had to beat him with a succession of hurtful shots. Briggs was a tough hombrejoeyjojo618 wrote:Really? Briggs had a questionable chin back in the day? Vitali nearly punched his face off and he kept on going. And that was as an old man.
What about Tommy Morrison?

Re: Power punchers and chins
Lewis had him down 5 times I think (although he had Lennox on jellylegs himself) and he was KO'd in the 3rd in his first loss by Darroll Wilson I think?joeyjojo618 wrote:Really? And he got up again at least four times... against a hard hitting HW in Lennox Lewis. The man had a good chin. Look what Lewis did to Michael Grant, Golota etc etc etcMr Bounce wrote:Lewis had him down 5 times I think (although he had Lennox on jellylegs himself) and he was KO'd in the 3rd in his first loss by Darroll Wilson I think?joeyjojo618 wrote:Really? Re: Power punchers and chins
Very true Dave. The Cannon had amazing powers of recuperation. And to take that much punishment against Vitali deserves some recognition. I take my original assessment back!
