Best chins in boxing today.
Hi guys newb here
I wanted to know what peoples thoughts and opinions are on the top five (or ten)hardest chins in boxing in this current era that are active, mine is as follows...
1-Marquez
2-Vitali Klitschko
3-Oliver McCall
4-James Tony
5-Carl Froch
Ive picked Marquez first due to him having so many fights and never been stopped, yes he has been beat and dropped a fair few times but has always came back and showed true grit and determination to see the final bell, all the positions in my list are debateable even marquez but Imo think Ive chosen a solid top five.
cheers Springer

I think Vitali has to be number 1. Marqueez has been down far too many times whilst Vitali has never been down. Marquez has great heart coming back in those fights but that is not a sign of how great his chin is but how big his heart is.
I also think that Wlad should be in the top 5. Yes he used to have a glass chin but he has not been knocked down for 8 years now (2004).
I would even throw kell brook into the mix. He took some hard shots from Carson Jones and never went down.

Re: Best chins in boxing today.
Oliver McCall is number 1, you could hit that guy with a car and he'd not go down.
I'd say Marquez has the weakest chin of the guys you've mentioned, excellent powers of recovery and boxing brain to survive when hurt but he gets hurt more than the rest you've said.
Mosley has one of the best chins there is and deserves a mention.

I wouldn't put Wlad in there, he doesn't go down because no one hits him any more as his defence is watertight.

Yes Bellchees its a really tough one mate McCall is right up there but he did actually get stopped by lewis so I had to rank him lower than the others.

Although Wlad is the most improved out of most current boxers defense wise his chin is still very questionable, I feel if he eventually gets tagged by a banger then tagged again its chicken dance time, a boxer can only really work on defense to try and be elusive as possible to avoid getting tagged.

Brandon Rios has to be on the list, he hasn't been down since he was 19/20 and has since been in countless wars
Chavez Jr deserves a mention too
Wlad has not got a chin that deserves in the top 5 by any stretch of the imagination, he doesn't get knocked out because of his great chin but because rid his good defence

Brandon and Junior did cross my mind WHU and I think they do get a shout in the top ten but the question is do they deserve to be up there amongst the elite? I mean is my list even up there with everybody's thoughts? I dont know, maybe I should of done "of all time" .

He got stopped for refusing to fight and having a mental breakdown. Lewis wasn't hurting him despite hitting him clean while McCall refused to put up a guard.

Yes thats a fair point mate, McCalls chin is unquestionable but I feel in the Lewis rematch Lewis was getting to him and McCall had no answer he was fustrated and give in. there could of been a KO on the cards if it went on for any longer after all it is Heavy weight boxing, thats the only reason McCall was ranked a bit lower than the others.

I think Marquez should not be in the top 5. He has been down on the canvas far too many times to say he has a top 5 chin.

Even though I rank Wlad as a good boxer, in terms of chin he is probably s ranked outside top 30.

What are you judging a good chin on? Because MArquez has been knocked down 10 times;
5 times against Manny Pacquiao
1 against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
1 against Michael Katsidis
1 against Marco Antonio Barrera
1 against Freddie Norwood
1 against Darryl Pinckney
I dont think Marquez has a solid chin I think he has a pretty weak chin to be knocked down 10 times. But I think he has a great heart and determination.

I think katsidis is worth a shout. Stopped on his feet a few times but took so much punishment. It would have been better of he learned to not block with his face!

Not sure you can have Marquez number 1, he has hit the deck a fair few times and has shown great powers of recovery but he can be shaken. Vitali number 1. Froch has a better chin than Marquez, as does Rios. I'd say Cleverly has a better chin than Marquez as well, always gets hit clean and has never once been rocked.

Carl Froch and to a lesser extent I'd throw Floyd in. I know he takes less punishment than most boxers but the right hand in the 2nd round of the Mosley fight would have KO'd most and Floyd managed to stay on his feet.

Re: Best chins in boxing today.
Isn't enough to prove he's got a great chin though as he's been troubled before Mosley
Does Khan have a great chin for taking and surviving that big looping right hand from Maidana? No
Micky Ward? Only stopped once which was due to a cut and managed to withstand countless wars like the 3 vs Gatti which he was decked only once
If we are going or recent era fighters than Bhop deserves a mention because although he doesn't get hit alot, when he does he barely flinches

Well Khan's struggled a lot more than against maidana so a fairly unreasionable argument to make. He's never been down in his pro career as far as I'm aware. Calzaghe went down a few times and was said to have a good chin. I'm not a Floyd fan but I can't see how he doesn't have a good chin?

Toney
Vitali
Froch
Wach
Floyd can think in a crisis which is a brilliant and surprising skill because he's rarely had the experience of being in a crisis, his chin is solid enough but not the pure granite of the three above.

Floyd was in plenty of trouble but unlike Khan, hes a ridiculously intelligent fighter in the ring and knew that you need to hold instead do trade when hurt that bad. His defenc rid the reason he doesn't get stopped or hurt much, not his chin
This thread isn't about fighters with good chins, we could list hundred of fighters with good chins, this is the thead for 5 best chins in boxing which Mayweather doesn't have

Re: Best chins in boxing today.
I wouldn't object to Vitali being in there, but once again the point that he's seldom had to take more than one shot at a time rears its head. Great chin, mind you.
Toney would be my pick, embarrassing though his career is these days. Eighty-odd fights from Middleweight to Heavyweight spanning twenty-four years and never really hurt and in trouble. Jones hit him with every shot in the book, as did Thadzi, as did Peter at Heavyweight (and Peter can whack, and whack well) and still Toney was never in danger of being stopped.
I think Marquez is similar to Larry Big Pants - very fine chin, perhaps not a great one, but incredible powers of recover and recuperation.

Has tended to always be the middleweight division which has produced the cast iron chins and the current crop isn't any different.

Not so sure about Valuev, his chin always looked good because not many people managed to land flush, Haye did it once and gave him jelly legs.

Haye was hitting him full force for 12 rounds and only once did he eve wobble him. you can't exclude valuev cos he once looked wobbled but then include people who have been knocked down.

True, but Valuev was knocked senseless by Chagaev who doesnt even hit as hard as Haye. I imagine if he fought Wlad he would have been Knocked out flat in a few rounds.

how is Froch above vitali?, Froch has been floored before and Vitali in the heavyweight division has not.

People will say that froch has fought better people etc I think Vitali should be number 1 the uppercut he took from eLewis that didn't even make him flinch shows how tough he is. Any other fighter would have been ko'd by an uppercut like that but Vitali walked right through it.

Froch has proven his chin time and time again against the best his division has to offer, Kessler, Abraham, Bute, Johnson and Pascal could all hit and hit very hard but didn't make a dent in him. His chin to me is more proven than Vitalis which is largely based on that one uppercut, no doubting it's made of granite but can't have him above Froch.

Froch has been knocked down tho.
I think the top 3 should be (in a random order) froch, Vitali, Wach.

Knockdowns happen it's part of boxing, it wasn't a particularly heavy one that had him in any real trouble.

Knockdowns are what evidence of a solid chin. Of course there are other factors but a knockdown no matter how bad it is will be a negative factor when discussing someones chin.

Possibly but you have to take into consideration opposition and various other factors, in my opinion Froch has the most proven chin in boxing today.

I think Froch is definitely up there but people seem to be putting him in their top 5 because he has faced top opponents. Has he actually taken a massive whack to the face in any of those fights? I know against Bute and Johnson he never so did he in any of his other fights?.

Not relevant to this post. The post is about who has the toughest chin in boxing in the current era. Vitali was knocked out by pele reid in the early 90's but that was not in a boxing match that was in a martial arts fight and it was a spinning back kick that knocked him out not a punch.

The question is who has the best chin so it is entirely relevant. Sanders also dropped him which the ref ruled no knock down.

Saners dropped him with an illegal rabbit punch so the ref was correct in scoring it a no knock down.
A knockout by a spinning back kick in a martial arts a different sport has no relevance to how good your chin is currently in a different sport, boxing.
It's a bit like saying that if a fighter participated in street fights where weapons are used (metal bars etc) that if that fighter gets knocked out by being hit in the face with a baseball bat then that knock out could be used against him to show that he has a weak chin in boxing.

Both are illegal in a boxing fight so being knocked out by either one has no bearing on your abiity to take a punch in a boxing match
