OK Aussies 12th man will be Chris Sabburg who was my local clubs overseas player last season. That's cool

If Lyon's dropped it's really rather terrible by Australia's management.
The kid's got a fine record. Yet they are contriving to ruin his career.

Agree Gerry it'd be madness, Lyon's fairly decent.

What are people's plans? Anyone going to do an allnighter?
I start work at 6am, so ill be getting up early and watching the evening session! Expecting England to be on 98-8 or Australia to be on 321-1
Please say Prior starts, one of our most dependable players.

Apparently selectors wanted all pace, Clarke wanted the spinner. I'd side with Clarke on this and think the right call has been made by Australia

I'm with Gb on this who has been saying for quite a while that Tremlett is undercooked. Time will tell, but for two years with injuries and lack of form this is a big call. Obviously there is something Flower and Saker see - that we do not.

Clearly an important wicket. I regard Rogers as under rated and a generally steadying influence on an immature Australian line up.
Almost another for Broad as Watson gets away with a loose shot.

5 runs per over thus far after 4, but 90/3 at lunch would be bliss.

Warner, in Australian conditions, is a mighty fine player.
And he's in pretty good form for NSW so far this season.

Re: Australia vs England 1st test match thread
Gerry - Warner is never going to morph into a Boycott but he's already eased off after his ferocious start. He was on 18 after his first 14 balls. He's now on 26 from 37. If he and Watson can continue like this for the second hour, Australia will be pleased. Currently 42/1.
Tremlett looking decent at times in his first 3 overs but spoiling it somewhat with a couple of 4 balls.

But when he gets in, and he seems to be in at present, he has the ability to pick the right ball to hit.
Anyway that's what Australia will be hoping Warner does. A blazing 70/80 isn't really much use.

"Morph into a Boycott"...
Nice one Guildford. Please don't make our nightmares even worse!
Completely different players, different eras and different mindsets.... that sort of thing.
Olly, I've amended the OP for ya.

Gerry - we're as one on that. I was really trying to emphasise the importance of Warner staying at the wicket rather than putting all his efforts into continuing to go at a run a ball. If he stays there, sufficient runs will come.Gerry SA wrote:

Re: Australia vs England 1st test match thread
Tremlett starting his sixth over on the reel. He rarely bowled more than 5 in any one spell for Surrey last season. So far today he's generally pitched the ball up and been there or thereabouts. It'll be particularly interesting to see if he can build on that in his second spell (I doubt he'll bowl more in this one) or whether it's taken a lot out of him and he suffers.

Fifty partnership from the two W's and looking comfortable. Very slow over rate from England, with 10 mins until lunch will be lucky to get 25 in.

And Broad gets Warner to go with Clarke who he picked up straight after lunch . Had been very impressed with Warner up until then, very assured and not a loose shot in sight. Looked like he wanted to bring his 50 up in style.
Think we owe a big thank you to the Australian media for getting Broad fired up. Currently 4/86, all 4 wickets to Broad. Bailey just almost caught by Prior off Anderson. After a good start by Aus it's all England at the moment.

And Bailey goes, caught at slip off Anderson. Never looked particularly comfortable since coming in and had dabbled outside off stump a few times before he was out. Smith looks in decent enough touch (if a little unorthodox as usual).
Aus 101/5 after 35.4 overs with Haddin now at the crease (before the afternoon drinks break). All England since the Watson wicket just before lunch.

New ball due in 8 overs. Root coming on to fiddle a few and give the quicks a breather before taking it.
Johnson is batting well.... He's getting after anything loose that Swann bowls with the old ball. England will be glad to get a second new ball in their hands, methinks.

Ill hold off on declaring how good the pitch is until England's turn.
Winding up Broad generally not a great idea. He's at his best when he's in a hostile mood

Michael Clarke will be buying Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson a pint tonight (he may even stretch that to a pint each..!!). Thanks to them, Australia will have something like a total to bowl at.
I totally concur GSC's comment. You never know how good any pitch is until both teams have batted on it.

Re: Australia vs England 1st test match thread
I have the impression this was a very good pitch to bat on , and Australia will be disappointed with the scoreline.
However Haddin and Johnson have ensured they are going to have something to defend at least. They have certainly lost the advantage gained by winning the toss - usually handy at this venue - by not being 300/3 or so : but while being skittled for 180 , as looked possible at one stage , would have been "game over" , the final score keeps them in the game. Remember England will have to bat last unless they bat very big...
Reckon England will be pretty happy with their day. And if they can clean the last couple up quickly tomorrow will fancy their chances of a useful lead. But they still have to do it with the bat.
Hope the weather doesn't mess the game about too much - bit of rain about next few days , I understand.

Re: Australia vs England 1st test match thread
England's day overall, any time you lose the toss and bowl, 8 wickets is a good outcome
That said if there's one weakness in this England team, it's batting big, so Australia will feel they're still in this. However like Broad, I sense a few other players like Cook and Trott have had enough of listening to Australia talk.

Re: Australia vs England 1st test match thread
Australia continue with their novel experiment of a reverse batting order. England disposed of the tail beginners without much fuss. But as they encountered the real batsmen, their bowling struggled just a little bit!!.
Seriously good stuff from Broad, this was always on the cards from the way the Australian media was treating him. Pretty bad idea to fire him up. Broad is not among my most favorite players from my 2nd favorite side, but I really wanted him to succeed today at the face of such unwanted and hypocritical hostilities. The rest of the boling unit also did a decent job.
David Warner and Steven Smith couldn't build on the starts, and same was the case with Shane Watson. But Brad Haddin played a fine hand with the bat. Mitchell Johnson is a very handy number 8 batsman, and with runs under his belt, he should be in a happy frame of mind when he takes the ball. So England better watch out.
The first day belongs to England, though Haddin and Johnson ensured that their side lives on to fight another day.
