HK Round 5 - Edinburgh V Perpignan
Heineken Cup round 5
Murrayfield stadium
Saturday 11th January
KO 18:00
Referee: Peter Fitzgibbon (Ireland)
Assistant referees: Mark Patton (Ireland), Richard Kerr (Ireland)
Television match official: Marshall Kilgore (Ireland)
TV - SS2 Red button
Group standings:
Munster 14
Gloucester 9
Edinburgh 8
Perpignan 7
Edinburgh team
15 Jack Cuthbert
14 Dougie Fife
13 Nick De Luca
12 Ben Atiga
11 Tom Brown
10 Greig Tonks
9 Greig Laidlaw CAPTAIN
1 Alasdair Dickinson
2 Ross Ford
3 Willem Nel
4 Grant Gilchrist
5 Izak van der Westhuizen
6 Cornell Du Preez
7 Roddy Grant
8 David Denton
Substitutes
16 Aleki Lutui
17 Wicus Blaauw
18 Geoff Cross
19 Ollie Atkins
20 Tomas Leonardi
21 Grayson Hart
22 Carl Bezuidenhout
23 Matt Scott
Perpignan team
[TBC]
All to play for in group 6, with Munster the likely group winners the remaining 3 teams all stand a chance of getting the 2nd place spot, and entry into the Amlin. Out of all the teams, Edinburgh are probably the only ones that would welcome that just now! If Edinburgh were to manage 2nd place it really would be a remarkable achievement. The fact that we still stand a chance of 2nd place makes it even more frustrating that we completely failed to turn up at home to a struggling Gloucester team - if we'd won that we'd be fighting it out for top spot just now.
As to the game itself, Edinburgh actually played quite well away to Perpignan, scoring a couple of decent tries, but were undone in the 2nd half by some woeful open field defence. That aspect of our game has improved beyond recognition since then so hopefully their dangerous strike runners can be nullified. The usual cliché can applied as to whether they will turn up or not, and I hope from an Edinburgh point of view they turn up typically French!

Re: HK Round 5 - Edinburgh V Perpignan
Edinburgh really shouldn't fear this one.
Perp haven't had the best of seasons and are currently 10th in the Top 14. Add that to the absolutely comprehensive wedgie that Munster dished out at Thomond makes me convinced that they're in no danger of overcoming the cliche that French sides don't travel well.
Edinburgh are a very different side now to the one that lost to Perp in October.

Re: HK Round 5 - Edinburgh V Perpignan
How far off the top 6 are they?
It can work in 2 ways - if they are out of it they may see this as a way of getting something out of the season.
If however they still stand a chance then they might want the hk over as quickly as possible.
P.s. - nice badge!

Good chance for a win here I feel, and it would keep us in Amlin contention. The players have had a bit of a rest so should come out firing.
Congratulations GC on your new appointment. With great power comes great responsibility, although I've always felt there was more to the theory that power corrupts. Just look at Alex "I'll smooth your planning application Mr Trump" Salmond.

I still maintain that being debagged, my testicles shaved and being required to buy a bottle of whisky for all of the other mods was a bit stringent for an initiation ceremony, but what the hey. It's done now and I look like a teenager again.

Re: HK Round 5 - Edinburgh V Perpignan
Back to rugby, I wonder if Matt Scott will be back soon? The chat at the time was that he would miss the December HK games and 1872 cup, but there’s not been anything since.
It would be a massive boost for Scotland if he was fit for both games, and even playing 1 game would be a bonus. I think most people want to see a Scott/Dunbar combo.
And let’s face it he only had a hand injury – he should be in pretty good shape, just lacking match fitness.

He was 24th man going to Glasgow so he must be approaching full match fitness. He said somewhere that he would feature in the team (I thought he said starting) for at least one of the 1872's...

What's this HK thing lads? Is it to point out the superfluousness/osity of the letter C or K in the English language? Or is it some in joke I missed?
PS. Hope it's not something to catch people out so you can shave their testicles and force them to buy Whiskey against their will.

Well the good news is we now have a Scottish mod and admin - so the next Lions tour when all of our players are overlooked again and every other nations rounds on us like last time we will be prepared!
#Discalmer - I am of course joking and all moderators and admins are completely impartial#
p.s. ASBO - you can talk about independence all you want, but as admin I now have the power to send the heavies round to your house and give you a massive wedgie. Just thought you'd like to know!

Tattie - admins are better looking, more popular and more intelligent than mods, simple.
For a real answer, admins are mods who have additional responsibilities for running the site. To be honest I don't fully know myself yet what I have to do!

Re: HK Round 5 - Edinburgh V Perpignan
Chat in the Scotsman is that Perpignan are going to rest most of their front line players. On the face of it that is good for us, but when we played them last time it was a random young winger that came off the bench and tore us to pieces!
Still – psychologically if we are up for it and get in their faces early on their enthusiasm may not last very long.

Kellock isn't going to be playing, so perhaps Glasgow's representative can be someone that the referee clearly doesn't hate. Hopefully the captain will be Strauss.funnyExiledScot wrote:George Carlin wrote:So Edinburgh gets the Gibbon and Glasgow gets Clownshoes. Was it something we said?

Suppose if you're in a knock out league like the Top 14 you want to secure that position first. If you're not going to win the HC or get past the qf then why bother. When you think about it you have in form Munster, Ulster, then Leinster, Saracens, Clermont, Toulon, Stade(?),etc so Perpingan probably won't get any further than the qf if they progress. Sad if it means teams still with a shot are bowing out.
---
EDINBURGH SQUAD UPDATE: Carl Bezuidenhout is introduced to the HC squad. Tony Fenner is leaving after his loan/trial. And Harry Leonard is playing for Gala vs Leeds.
As expected, just in writing.

Make Mad Niko McMentalman captain for the day. That in itself would be worth the price of admission.
