Nothing to do with soccer. Its an example of sporting mentally and its application on the pitch.

Perhaps Germany are just better than you give them credit for?

Germans are what they are - methodical.  Systems in operation, fail safes, finely measured parameters.  If they succeed it's not down to chance, it's down to planning.

Britain is second best at methodical (Germanic blood showing) but let themselves down a little because the have a little more passion that seeps through and destroys mechanical plans.

I hear the Englsih rugby team has a massive system ready for the build up to the rugby WC.  Purpose built training complexes, new systems devised by an expert who brought so much success to the British Olympic cycling team, night time training to mimic real-time game times etc......

So away we go on the methodical approach of science and reason.  We'll see if a little passion (dwarf throwing and ship jumping) let's down the well oiled cogs again.

perhaps.... but given they are the only side in KO world cup history never to lose at penalties and have only ever lost once in that method in all competitions its clear to say they are mentally very strong compared.

World cups

02 - final
06 - 3rd
10 - 3rd

stating a strong mentality is not just for winners.... its maximising your potential and then some.. achieving what you should never had achieved.
What teams would do for such mental strength.

Well thats debatable. Germany are a quality team and worthy of winning more cups..

Once you start getting close without any cigar it starts becoming a mental problem.. The conversation was about mentality and how that can change.

during the 00s the England team were better... easily no  questions.

Owen - Balon D'or.
Beckham - 2nd world player of the year.
Lampard - 2nd world player of the year.
Gerrard  - 3rd world player of the year.

Rooney, Ashley Cole, Ferdinand, Scholes etc would have featured in any squad in the world also.

Man for man they were better then Germany yet their record in the same tournaments was

02 - QF
06 - QF
10 - 2nd Round.

only in the last tournament would I have said Germany slightly edged ahead of them man for man.

I myself in most sports would go for lesser players with stronger mentalities over higher skilled players. Its why JW has 90 odd caps, a RWC and legendary status... and why Charlie Hodgson does not. Alf Ramsey used to say that he didn't pick the best players, he picked players to make the best team. SCW was similar getting rid of many highly talented individuals who lowered morale and were not team players according to his book.

I cant buy that we were better individually.

anyway that is debatable but not the point.

This isn't the place.

feel free to debate it on the footy boards. I will carry it on no probs as many others will.

Sorry GE.

The subject is tools isnt it?

I need a new drill. Has anyone tried the 36v Dewalt?

The 24v was good, but extra kick from the 36v probably means I wont need a socket powered one.

Rugby - Always have a socket powered for real work. The battery pack ones are for DIYists - shyte - Union.

Does my comment pass the 'rugby detector'?

Personally I miss murray mexted. Super rugby hasn't been the same for me without his insights.

"He scored that try after only 22 seconds – totally against the run of play.”

“Strangely, in slow motion replay, the ball seemed to hang in the air for even longer.”

“Andy Ellis – the 21 year old, who turned 22 a few weeks ago”

"I haven't had a knee operation on any other part of my body."

"Its all tied up at 14-13"

"I would not say Rico Gear is the best left winger in the Super 14, but there are none better."

"The All Blacks second-rowers are huge men. They're both over one meter tall ... hang on, that would make them midgets."

He wanted to see had Hartley a DeWalt set of teeth. And sure enough, he seems to have purchased a pair for heavy duty wall chasing.

Old Murray Mexted seemed to have the same attention to funny detail as the late great David Coleman.

Humm. I wonder which is more likely based on their character and history, Hartley tried to bite Ferris or Ferris tried to take his teeth?

I don't follow Cricket but even I know Peterson is in danger of doing as many retirement gigs as Sinatra. Will that really be the end of him? Or will there be another comeback tour?
