Selby Gets WBC Eliminator

Lee Selby will face Romulu Koasicha in an official eliminator for the WBC Featherweight title with the International belt on the line at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff on May 17, live on Sky Sports.

Selby is sitting pretty at number three in the WBC rankings and is closing in on champion Jhonny Gonzalez, who defends his title in his native Mexico a week later.

The Welshman must see off Gonzalez’s fellow countryman Koasicha to move towards his first World title shot, with the Mexican fresh from defending his WBC US Featherweight title in February having reclaimed the crown in July.

Selby impressed in his last outing at the Motorpoint Arena, stopping former World title challenger Rendall Munroe in February to add the European title to his British and Commonwealth straps, and promoter Eddie Hearn says his charge will be out to impress again in Cardiff.

“Lee is buzzing right now, he put in a great performance against Munroe in a sold out arena in Cardiff and he can’t wait to get back there,” said Hearn. “He is nicely poised in the rankings and the plan is to be the mandatory challenger by the close of the year.”

Selby’s clash with Koasicha is part of a cracking night of action in Cardiff, as Nathan Cleverly shares top billing in his first fight at Cruiserweight.

Gary Buckland and Gavin Rees locks horns once again in a rematch of their British Lightweight title eliminator that was an early contender for Fight of the Year and world class Super Middleweight talent Callum Smith defends his WBC International title against Swansea’s Tobias Webb.

Unbeaten Light Welterweight Chris Jenkins continues to plot his path to a British title shot, and there is action for St. Clears Welterweight Dale Evans and Limerick Middleweight Andy Lee.

Great to see Selby getting his chance.

However would have loved to have seen some of these fights on the Wembley card. Think eddie is missing a trick. Froch v Groves is a real showcase event. A chance to entice fans to the sport. Stack the card and you make loads more money long term.

Ok degale on the card so a bit better now. Would like to see him get together with other promoters and put a few more decent fights on

Well, he has won the WBC International SMW title.....

Winnable fight for Selby is he squares off against Ghonzales.

Think that the Mares destruction may have made him look a tab better than he is. No disrespecting the win though as it was a spectacular one.

The thing is with Selby, he is very cute with his shots but I don't think he has the power at the high level. Lets remember the size difference when he fought Martin Lindsey and Liam Walsh and he still couldn't make a dent in those guys.

The top feathers may be a bit too much for him, but all the best to Selby, he is def a cut above the rest in the UK and looking at the Europeans it seems he is a cut above them too. So good to see him being let off the leash. Hopefully this isn't one of Eddies so called eliminators to sell the fight. Remember McCloskey vs Prescott was a WBA final eliminator and how many did Brook have before Alexander was finally signed up for him.

Definitely a step in the right direction for Selby. A tidy little boxer with good reflexes and subtle defensive footwork. I believe under the guidance of Hearn he will move onto world level and pick up at least one of the four major titles.

Why have I barely every heard of these opponents in these eliminators? Chilemba is about the only one.

Looking at his record KM and the fights he's been in I would expect Selby to handle him with relative ease if he has real ambitions of stepping up to world level, he doesn't really have knockout power but hasn't been stopped so a UD is your best bet.
