Re: Mick Newell replaces Ashley Giles as selector
They haven't said he's replaced Giles, but they have said, he will be a selector whilst also remaining with Notts..
however Newell was my choice to become England head coach, so im happy with the decision to make him a selector

Not a particularly big fan of Newell if I'm honest.
If anything he'll be reluctant to pick Notts players as he's still involved with them, see his new Limited Overs skipper JWA Taylor. Doubt he's getting a call up now.

Re: Mick Newell replaces Ashley Giles as selector
I'm not sure the idea that county selectors will always be partisan and pick their own players actually holds. I can imagine Angus Fraser having the opposite effect actually - urging caution with regard to Middx players. Of course, there may be cases when having worked with a player allows the selector to feel more confident in picking somebody too. Perhaps this will be most true of Moores and Kerrigan, and perhaps Newell and Taylor.
I'm a little surprised that they've gone for another selector attached to a county. It means that the panel now consists, alongside the National Selector, of somebody who was a county Head Coach until a few days ago, a county Head Coach and a county Director of Cricket. However, it probably makes economic sense to do this. Apart from attending meetings the main thing that selectors do is sit at county grounds, mostly in press boxes, making notes on various players. In some ways it makes sense for somebody who is already travelling around the county circuit to take this on rather that somebody different. Whitaker or even Moores can always be dispatched if somebody particularly needs looked at it in a certain week.
There might also have been an issue in finding another suitable candidate. When Fraser was appointed (to replace Flower) a few months ago the position was advertised and, if there had been another outstanding contender from outside the county game, I'm sure they'd have been looked at.

Re: Mick Newell replaces Ashley Giles as selector
I suppose the upside is there's very few coaches more up to date with CC than Newell.
Tbh outside of Taylor there's not really many he could bring in. Hales was awful in 4 day cricket last season, Lumbs already in the t20 team. Patels got the talent but burned his bridges I imagine.
