Re: What was going on in the world on the day you were born?
An interesting topic subject. I've only just noticed it, but better late than never.
Perhaps the lack of responses so far is because not very much happened on the actual birthdays of members. Mine is very scant in events.
It might be better if the thread was about the date in the calendar rather than the actual day itself.
Events on my date of birth:
55 BC Roman forces under Julius Caesar invaded Britain
1346 Battle of Crecy. English forces led by Edward the Black Prince slaughtered the French army by extensive use of the longbow as artillery.
1498 Michaelangelo was commissioned to make The Pieta
1934 Adolph Hitler demanded that France cede the Saar region to Germany
1945 Japan surrendered to US forces on the USS Missouri.
1957 The USSR successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic nuclear missile
1991 Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev promised national elections.
People I share a birth date with:
Mother Theresa - Missionary and Humanitarian (1910)
Macauley Culkin - Child actor (1980)
Robert Walpole - UK Prime Minister (1694)
Albert, Prince Consort of Queen Victoria (1819)
Steve Wright - Radio 1 DJ (1954)
Michael Gove - Government minister for education (1967)
Deaths on my birth date:
Ralph Vaughan Williams - composer (1958)
Francis Chichester - sailor, first man to circumnavigate the globe solo (1972)
Charles Lindbergh - airman and explorer (1974)
Clyde Walcott - West Indian cricketer (2006)
