Remember rugby is a team game, so what he brings makes up for others & what he lacks is made up by others. It is the sum of the parts.

Should really wait until I see the real thing before I make my mind up, but that looks absolutely awful. I was hoping for the 2012-13 kit in orange and black without the bib.Welly wrote:Rumoured new Away kit
I hate it if it is, why not just Orange and black stripes.

Re: Leicester Tigers 2014/15 Thread.
You've said that before Sgt and I can't. He has been a bit of a maverick for the under 20s and has scored a few tries around the fringes using his step, pace and slow centre of gravity. It'll certainty be tougher for him than his contemporaries to step up but I doubt Tigers would keep on a hooker that isn't going to make it.
Cockers did make the statement "he's too small but if you're good enough you're big enough and he's good enough".

Re: Leicester Tigers 2014/15 Thread.
I always got the impression he was being carried at U20 becasue his loose work (open space running) was so good. He'll be found at AP imo, you can't hide in the set piece and the space will be tighter. He's a smaller version at that guy at Saracens (Can't recall his name but he scored an amazing try in a meaningless game at Twickers I think).
Time will tell I guess.

Wish I was but have work in the morning, and live in the north west now.
Shame we don't have a setup like Edinburgh did.

Sadly not. Was hoping to get tickets but ended up booking a holiday instead. Somewhat restricted my ticket purchasing funds.
Will be interesting to see how he adapts Sgt. His darts are good and he looked good in the first team last season. Will certainly need to be in a back with some bulk though. Have to see how he bulks up as he is still young. His skill set is miles ahead of most hookers which is a benefit.

Wow Manu looks even bigger. Apparently he grubbered through for the Barbieri try tonight.

Hmm not sold on that.
Decent victory vs a strong Cardiff outfit should help the lads blow off the cobwebs and be ready for next week.
Valuable game time for Allen, Kitchener and Tait. Bring on the new AP season.

I am an idiot and you shouldn't listen to anything I say. Having actually seen the kit I've done a complete 180 and really like it. Not sure I'll buy it because I much prefer to wear more plain shirts like last seasons home strip but it will definitely look good on the pitch.

Re: Leicester Tigers 2014/15 Thread.
OK so my thoughts:
Game started well with excellent interplay from the backs across many phases. Quite deservedly two tries up within 10 minutes. Barbieri try a touch fortunate - Manu's grubber deflected by the Blues 13 away from the full back and an easy dot down for Barbieri. Youngs try came from an excellent break bt Burns with a perfectly timed offload to Manu. The young Samoan Englishmen showed his customary power to stay on his feet until Goneva looped round to take the offload who then timed the pass to Youngs perfectly.
Despite wearing 3, Logo packed down at loosehead in the first half. Adam Jones gained a penalty at the first scrum - but Logo managed to persuade the ref that the veteran was pulling down on his arm. For the rest of the half the ref was on that side of the scrum and Tigers were utterly dominant - though some odd decisions such as allowing the entire Blues 8 to disengage then walk round and steal the ball!!
However after the two tries, Leicester seemed to be playing drills and the match lacked any intensity - not a surprise I guess. It was only once Blues took a 5 point lead that the team reall started to work again.
The Good - some of the handling and interplay by the backs was sublime. Morris, Tait and Scully all excellent under the high ball.
The Bad - Receiving kick-offs was not good. Forwards lost the ball forward in contact with frightening regularity.
The Ugly - A close second goes to Sam Harrisons hair - looked like he had stolen it straight form 70s era Charlies Angels. but the winner was the kit. Truly, truly awful.

I would be delighted, but extremely surprised, to see Tom Youngs appearing in any guise on Saturday.
Fully expect Crane to start ahead of Barbieri and would not be surprised to see Tait start.

23.Scully
I will feel so much for Gibson if left out but can see it coming with Croft fit and Barbieri capable of covering the back row.
All in all I'd be delighted to see that. Not the biggest fan of De Chaves but with Slater, Deacon and Thorn unavailable he isn't a bad 6th choice. The props will get tested but we have known that for a while and I'm actually really looking forward to seeing Balmain get some time starting.
The backs look great though, especially if Tait is fully fit. Give Youngs and Burns a platform with those outside him and things could get very interesting!

Good response from Cockers. Moody and Back have got axes to grind over previous issues. Big season though, another season without a final and Cockers may be lacking a job.

Really? Have they done that badly under his tenure? As he says, Saracens have been the best team week-in week-out for the past two seasons but haven't won anything. Does that mean Mark McCall should lose his job as coach? Of course not.

No Jimpy, I think he's done a good job but fan pressure will see him out. It's not fair but it's the way it is at Tigers. Win or go. Cockerill knows it as well. Tigers have invested heavily this summer because they know continued failure is not an option.
Shouldn't happen this season, the squad looks excellent and there's a nice stream of young talent coming in behind the first team. Finally got in that defence coach as well.

Wells named at blindside for Bedford who feature ex Tigers Ben Gulliver and Ollie Dodge. Javiah Pohe is on the bench for Nottingham. No other Tigers involved for Notts which is a touch surprising.

I agree, I'm more confident about this season than i have been for the past several years. Good strength in depth, some great signings and relatively injury free at season start. Come out of the blocks and smash Falcons is the first item on the agenda, a slow start is no good for Tigers. If they come out fighting, there's every reason to believe they could secure a home play-off positionby Christmas, as Saracens (and Saints 'nearly') did last year.
Cockers isn't irreplaceable, but I'm not sure who could replace him. Could we get Pat Howard back you reckon? ;-)

Re: Leicester Tigers 2014/15 Thread.
Mauger or Gibson are both coaching at Super 15 level. Burke seems a favourite with the board but I'm not convinced. Back would be back in a heart beat (he wanted the job when Cockers got it) and then both Johnno and Corey are still locally based. Smith is at LW. Chuter and Vesty are running the Wuss academy. Brett Deacon is working with our academy. Newby is coaching Cambridge. There's potential coaches all over the place from ex Tigers.

Only saw the match last week vs Blues. I thought his ball striking in a tricky wind was really good.
About the team - well really pleased to see Tom Youngs featuring as that indicates the whispers I heard about his wife's health would appear to be untrue (thankfully). I hope Niall Morris does not repeat his Jonny May impression of last week where he ran 40m sideways for every 1 forwards.
I also have to say - wtf do we do in training:

Burke is kicking/backs coach I believe.
TBH I don't actually know how long he has been training with us.
England players tend to get back the week of the 1st pre-season game.
He has made some decent kick but missed some sitters, but then players can play differently in preseason.

Re: Leicester Tigers 2014/15 Thread.
From hand his kicking looked brilliant vs Edinburgh but off the tee a bit iffy. Then again it was into a stuff wind and Heathcote faired far worse when kicking the same way.
Glad to see Tom Youngs in there. I agree with LT on his comments on his personal life. Not a good situation with a baby as well, hoping for full recovery soon.
Matera picked up a nasty shoulder injury vs SA the other weekend. Interesting there's no Tait. He's obviously not fit enough. A lot of frigging Injuries again.

I find the radio Leicester lot so annoying at times.
Very good interviews but there analysis can be pretty rubbish at times.
Ed Slater saying he may be back latter then he originally thought.

Re: Leicester Tigers 2014/15 Thread.
For various seasons only got to our seats just before teams came out and it took me a while to realise that Croft was a late withdrawal and we only had 4 forwards on the bench.
First half was interesting with Falcons having a lot of possesion but few ideas. Tigers were making all the breaks but a mix of sloppy play and cynical infringements (3 penalties for killing the ball 5m from line and in front of posts gave 9pts but should have seen a yellow) saw Falcons hold out.
Second half started with Tigers defence just assuming Burns clearing kick had made touch and virtually waving Falcons through. This was followed by a goneva hat-trick which in truth owed a little to luck. First was from a barnstorming Manu run but the offload to Goneva hit the tacklers head crossed the line and was touched down. Second was a good half break from burns and 3rd was a length of the try interception where I felt we may have done something at the preceding ruck.
Final try saw some amazing skill from replacement Barbieri as he bunny hopped the ball forward at a 5m scrum which saw Falcons decimated. Just as he was about to touch down, cheeky Mele got there first.
Favouroute moment was one Log charge in first half. He smashes 3 tacklers aside before carrying the ball a further 20m the smashing 3 further tacklers aside. This leaves him one on one with Sinotti, the Falcons wing, who is 5m from try line. Outstanding tackle made.
Not the greatest game, but a TBP starts the season well.

Re: Leicester Tigers 2014/15 Thread.
It'll take a couple of games to get going. Always does. I'll take TBP victory on opening day. Sets us up nicely early doors. After Newcastle settle they'll be a tougher proposition.
I suspected Croft might not make the start. It's a concern some of our first team players are carrying knocks already.
Loamano is both a backrow and a back so I suppose he's a good backup to bring onto a bench in situations like that.
I've not seen any of the game yet so can only comment in the result. Did our young props come off the bench at all?

Bristow replaced Logo with about 10-15 minutes to go. Balmain left with about 3 minutes to go. We lost one against the head as soon as Pasquali came on, next scrum Falcons were pinged for early push.

Re: Leicester Tigers 2014/15 Thread.
Although Owen is still my choice for 10, I liked how burns played for as long as he did, as he looked like he had regained his confidence, Gonevas 2nd try (I think) was from a great step and pass by burns, and his kicking off the tee was much sharper than in preseason. Although his kicking out of hand got a little loose towards the end.
All the new signings looked very good, defence was mixed but the new coach has only been here for 2 weeks.
On a sour note Hamilton (out for 6 months) and Slater (possibly 7 months apparently had a OP), makes Thorn signing even more important, great stuff Cohen.
Be interesting to see if leicester go for another Back rower (Turiqi style signing). Pearce looking like he will be back soon so that is a plus.
Thought De cheves looked better than in pre season.
Next up the A league game on Monday be interesting to see who is in that.
