Surrey vs Hampshire Royals T20 Blast
Surrey have named a 13 man squad for the NatWest T20 Blast game against the Hampshire Royals at the Kia Oval on Friday.
Sri Lanka batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan is set to make his Surrey debut having arrived in the country this week. Chris Tremlett and Tom Jewell are included in a T20 squad for the first time this season but Jade Dernbach is unavailable due to the hamstring strain he picked up in the recent Championship game against Leicestershire and there is no place in the squad for Matthew Dunn.
The Surrey squad to play the Hampshire Royals in the NatWest T20 Blast on Friday 27th June at the Kia Oval:
Gary Wilson (capt)
Zafar Ansari
Gareth Batty
Tom Curran
Steven Davies
Tillakaratne Dilshan
Tom Jewell
Kevin O’Brien
Azhar Mahmood
Robin Peterson
Kevin Pietersen
Jason Roy
Chris Tremlett

Thanks Jimbob. Will KP make the cut? Hope Curran is fully recovered from his injury. A bit surprised to see Tom Jewell in the squad.

Amla will be sorely missed. Hope Dilshan settles in quickly. Time for both Pe/ieterso/ens to make a contribution.

Re: Surrey vs Hampshire Royals T20 Blast
Thanks JimBob. For all the abuse Dernbach merits and gets, he fulfills an important t20 role in bowling during the opening and closing overs (with Mahmood). Who replaces him there is not without issues.
Most logically it would be Tremlett ... but ... by his standards, he's played a lot of cricket in recent weeks. He definitely looked stiff on day 3 of this week's Leics game. Our next CC match is on Saturday (not the usual Sunday), also at home to Hants. I think we'll be pushing our luck and Tremlett's fragility if he plays t20 on Friday night and then starts a four dayer the next day.
If it's considered sensible for him to miss out on one, the t20 might be what gives. If so, Jewell could just come in on Friday and get a rare chance to shine. Possibly the impressive Curran could bowl Dernbach's usual overs with Jewell bowling some of the middle overs. We've also got Ansari and O'Brien ready to turn their arm if needed - don't believe either bowled against Glamorgan last week.

Morning guys, big match today! Re. Team news we will most likely be unchanged from the last couple of games, the only exception maybe Bates in for Wheater as wicketkeeper. Other than that the side is pretty settled.
This game should be on TV though? KP, Dilshan, Roy, Carberry, Vince, Maxwell?

According to the Surrey Ad, Jimbo's boys have a mighty impressive record - ''Hampshire have won eight out of six games in this year's T20''! A rare goof from my man Spiller.

Hi Jimbo - definitely should be on TV although that wouldn't benefit me as Mrs Bat commandeers the remote control for Wimbledon fortnight!

Surrey win toss and elect to bowl. Tremlett plays as Jewell and Davies miss out.
No news on the Surrey squad for the CC match starting tomorrow, also against Hants. Suspect Tremlett will sit that one out.

Re: Surrey vs Hampshire Royals T20 Blast
I hadn't reckoned on Dilshan bowling. Three overs on the reel, 1/12. Wow! Possibly we could have strengthened the batting by bringing in Davies for one of the other slowies. Ah well, settle for where we are now - Hants 36/2 off 5.3.

Re: Surrey vs Hampshire Royals T20 Blast
Hants 131/9 off their allocation. Bit of a recovery mounted by Wood towards the end but we should be able to chase that down.
15 of the 20 bowled by slowies. 4 from Mahmood, just 1 from Tremlett and none at all from Curran.

Any update on KP playing some FC cricket for his county? Or is he effectively retired from the longer formats?

Surrey 78/1 off 6.1 overs. Dilshan just out for 15 off 16 balls.
Meanwhile, Jason Roy has 62 from 22!!!

Msp - all gone very quiet on that front. Doubt he'll play the longer format. He doesn't seem keen and Surrey have less interest now that they've started winning the odd game.
Do look out though for Jason Roy. I first saw him in a Surrey seconds' game at Guildford about four years ago and was convinced he would make it to the top. He's caused me - and many others I told about him! - to question that belief in the intervening time with a lack of concentration and impatience too often getting the better of him. However, it does now look as if he just might be on the brink of something special. Made 63 tonight off 25 balls and has surely set Surrey up for a comfortable win.
Meanwhile, Pietersen currently has 21 off 15 with 2 maximums.

Good stuff from Briggs 1-19 off his 4.
Still in that a team with Carberry, Vince, Adams, Maxwell, Ervine can struggle so badly.

Re: Surrey vs Hampshire Royals T20 Blast
Superb performance by Surrey tonight. Remarkable that achieved with our two specialist faster bowlers only delivering one over between them.
Roy really is in excellent form in this competition at the moment.
If qualification for next stage comes down to goal average tonight should help considerably.

I'm sure the ever reliable JimBob (trust he wasn't at the Oval tonight doing a slo mo Mexican wave! ) will put up a separate thread for the CC match against Hants but just to flag now that Tremlett is indeed 'rested'. The major surprise - to me anyway - is that O'Brien is named in the 12 man squad.

Re: Surrey vs Hampshire Royals T20 Blast
Good win for Surrey, completely dominated. A Hales, Roy, Vince top 3 in One Day Cricket? England could do a lot worse......
Giles White confirms that Wheater comes in for Bates for tomorrow. Tomlinson for Maxwell our only other change I would imagine.

Just seen the highlights of Roy's innings on Surrey website. The first boundary looked like a reverse swish across the line and LBW if he missed. Looked full of confidence and seeing the ball like a balloon!

Yeah Guildford, I've come across references to Jason Roy from you and others. His overall stats are quite modest, but the lad does seem very promising. Does he play the longer formats regularly and opens the innings?guildfordbat wrote:msp83 wrote:Any update on KP playing some FC cricket for his county? KP at last got a half-decent score after a few failures, hope he turns it around quickly. But I will be really disappointed if he limits himself to T-20 alone, he's at his best in longer formats.

Re: Surrey vs Hampshire Royals T20 Blast
Msp - Roy's played every four day game this season but until now has been rather in and out of the side in that format. Not helped by his own lack of concentration and the previous management regime at Surrey moving him up and down the order at will. This season he's regularly playing at number 6 in the longer format. A settled position together with new found maturity (as confirmed by Alec Stewart, Surrey's executive cricket director) have certainly seen an improvement in that format although it's really been in the t20 where he opens that he's been attracting attention. Calls in the last 24 hours from his captain Gary Wilson and Pietersen no less for England to have a serious look at him.
As well as being a wonderfully clean hitter with a great eye for the ball, he's also an excellent fielder which won't do his international one day prospects any harm.
Possibly the best chance of Pietersen playing a 4 day game now is if Dilshan misses one (which I think he has to for some reason) and Stewart sweet talking Pietersen into taking over.
