First topic message reminder :
Can someone help me out here? Whats the craic with the Sevens in Glasgow? I have some questions...
When is it happening?
Who is playing?
Can I watch it on TV?
That kind of thing, you know?

They were, I was confused because I knew they were reinstated but as RDW says it was too late for them to qualify for Sevens or netball (thanks Google!)

Re: Rugby Sevens at the Commonwealth Games
I thought New Zealand's sinbins seemed to fly by...
Scotland's Sevens team will not lodge an appeal after New Zealand finished their Commonwealth Games clash in Glasgow with an extra player on the field.
With New Zealand leading 17-7 with less than two minutes left on the clock, Tim Mikkelson was yellow carded, meaning he should have sat out the rest of the game. But as they held on to win 17-14 - and should have been down to five players after Gilles Kaka was also sent to the sin bin - but at the final hooter they still had seven players on the pitch.
Scotland coach Stephen Gemmell said he would not make a complaint as Mikkelson's return was due to refereeing error. "An error was made that had no direct impact on the outcome of the game," he said. "We'd given away a free kick at the line-out as the clock ran down and had given New Zealand the ball.
"Like our errors, the referees will analyse their performances and we hope this will be taken on board."
Kala returned to the field after Scotland cut the deficit to three points but it was unclear when Mikkelson came back on.
"I haven't heard there's an issue about the actual time they were off," IRB Sevens general manager Avan Lee said. "It was a crucial time in the game. New Zealand only up by three points with only a few seconds to go. Home team. So there were emotions for a lot of people. I don't think I've seen five players playing [before]."

How was the pools decided?
It seems this works out the same as the RWC, SA to meet NZ in the semi

Solid performance crushed the Canucks and through to the knockouts.
Also damn that's a big crowd hope a few of them decide to pay the warriors a visit.

Yes, well played Scotland. Good win against Canada from Scotland. Wales v Samoa now, could be interesting.cakeordeath wrote:ebop wrote:NZ taking the mick, play like that again and it'll be curtains.
Or you know, Scotland actually played well and better than NZ in the 2nd half.

Are the refs always this frustrating in 7's? first time i've watched it and the ref seems to be pinging everything. Is that just to speed up the game?

Dont watch football so havnt really seen the stadium- fantastic arena. I've long imagined Glasgow as a very cold, miserable, dark concrete place like something out of a Dickens novel (and therefore displaying my utter naivety) but in watching the triathlon and other outdoor events what a beautiful city.
oops...streaker on the pitch in the SA Kenya match- not that theyre showing it though.

I dont think I've ever seen that stadium before, and must say it looks like a really good playing surface, however the "in goal" areas are too shallow.
I agree the city of Glasgow looks brilliant.

Just in case anyones in any doubt or confusion, a sin binned player can not return to the field of play until given the clearance to do so by the match official (Not by his teams management).

Ohhh, I know, not suggesting he snuck on, just that as it states in the article it was an error by the officials to allow him back on early.
Re: Rugby Sevens at the Commonwealth Games
Looking ahead to tomorrow, knockout stages look tasty
New Zealand V Kenya
-
Wales V Australia
Samoa V England
-
South Africa Scotland
So, Scotland's path to 7's glory and gold looks like this...
Beat the Boks, beat England, get revenge over New Zealand. Celebrate. Easy eh!?

Did anyone watch Sri Lanka vs Uganda?
Absolutely brilliant, Sri Lanka was full of running and showed great stepping, pace and ball skills to score a few tries.
Uganda was out of it with less than 3 minutes to go, got a player carded and subsequently scored three tries in three minutes ( two with only six players) to win.
The enthusiasm and exuberance these teams play at is infectuous.

Just home now - what an atmosphere it has been all day
Full house (pretty much) at both sessions and brilliant fun all day. The underdogs were very popular as expected and Uganda got a lot of love.
Got to be one of the events of the games!

Re: Rugby Sevens at the Commonwealth Games
Some good games today (yesterday) particularly New Zealand vs Scotland. Good to see Kenya getting through though they have virtually no chance of getting past the All Blacks in the quarter finals.
Good format too with the pool stages on one day and the knock-out stages on the next.

NO!!! Because the BBC coverage has been shocking...
One minute on the RED button, then swap to BBC3 then England play swap to BBC1. Wales first game not even showed unless you boot up your computer and have an internet speed able to stream it.... BLOODY ANNOYED
During, Sri Lanka v Uganda on the TV it went to Judo and then interviewing a couple of women in pink anoraks and asking a band why big BAS wasn't playing....
Consider the 7s is a highlight of the games, why don't they show all games uninterrupted on a Red button, without swapping forcing you to change options all the time....

Just getting blown away.
Not convinced about Scotland's team selection - Roddy Grant and Riddell aren't the quickest. I would have had Lamont starting for more pace.

Shame we have to go 3 tries down against NZ & the Boks before we start playing.
Great try by Bennett though, still hope

Re: Rugby Sevens at the Commonwealth Games
Really felt for the Scottish yesterday, I know noone will complain but if your a Scot and facing the first ever win over NZ in the CW games, 20 seconds is a lifetime!!
Feel for Wales today too, thought the ref should've pinged Australia at least twice in the run up to the winning try, instead 4/5 penalties in a row to Aus and game over.
Been some great rugby from all though so far, semi finals will be very interesting.

Its a shame, that game was an example of how important it is that minnows get an opportunity on the international stage at regular intervals.
the enthusiasm and happiness on the faces of those players is a sight to behold, and even though they may not be at all competitive against the top nations, they are equally as entertaining to watch.
We're lucky in SA, we get all the Sevens matches. Plus a couple more channels, a bit tough to decide what to watch when.

Re: Rugby Sevens at the Commonwealth Games
Sevens was a mini-reprisal of the summer: Wales throwing away a game at the death they should have won; England giving away free points to a yellow card, and poor execution letting them down when they had a chance to redeem themselves.

Not just the summer but the past few summers, it really must be a mental thing and the 7s are now suffering same as the XVs

I have been enjoying the 7s. I was there yesterday afternoon and been interneting it today. Scotlnd about as good as expected. Some good matches. Minnows getting a huge cheer or two and I like the bowl / sheild games. The atmosphere has been great. Looking forward to the final rounds

Decent win by Wales but Kenya did not want to be there whatsoever, not sure why they do the whole plate, bowl thing at these type games, without a shout at a medal whats the point?

the plate / bowl serves two purposes - gives the lessor teams meaningful games and fills the time between the various rounds of the main comp.

Thanks for educating me, although we all know what the purpose of them in the world series, the CW games and olympics are far different, just see Kenyas half hearted performance there

Good game between England and Scotland, pretty nervy at the end and almost a hero moment for Hogg but not to be.

Gutted. Gutted. Gutted.
Big issue this weekend, terrible starts against the big teams. Conceded 3 tries each time before we started playing. Always an uphill struggle after that.

Is that the great hope? A Scotland v England game? Decent enough game but only one winner, England were nowhere near up for that like they would be for a proper semi.

Hogg is a bit of a greedy player isn't he? You'd think he'd kill in Sevens he's just looking to make the break himself and if he does he's rather prone to outrun his support.
Now, Bennett- he impressed me a lot.
