Rugby Sevens dropped from stripped-down Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

This is more to do with the concept of the Commonwealth Games, rather than rugby. Still, it does settle the immediate question of whether England, Scotland and Wales would reform their sevens teams (there's no Team GB at the Commonwealth Games).

Sports including rugby sevens, hockey, cricket and diving will not be featured in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Only 10 sports will participate in the scaled-down Games after the Australian state of Victoria backed out in 2023, and Glasgow came to the rescue.

The 10 sports were athletics, swimming, gymnastics, cycling, netball, weightlifting, boxing, judo, bowls, and 3x3 basketball.

There will also be integrated para events in six of those sports – athletics, swimming, track cycling, weightlifting, bowls and basketball.

The Commonwealth Games Federation on Tuesday confirmed the Scottish city as the host of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, and announced the dates and sports programme.

New Zealand Olympic Committee CEO Nicki Nicol said, “While it’s great that the Games have been confirmed, the news is bittersweet for some of our athletes and member federations, with a number of traditional sports not on the programme.”
